It was a bright sunny morning that greeted Heero as he opened his eyes. It was Sunday, but not just any Sunday -- it was Easter. He had been planning what to do to celebrate the occasion with Duo ever since the other boy had mentioned the special day to him during the last war. They had been partners at Preventers for months now, and finally Heero had the chance to do something to show Duo how much he valued their friendship. Smiling slightly, he got up and got dressed, grabbing the little box he'd had for a month now from one of his dresser drawers before making his way into the living room. He was surprised to see Duo sitting on the couch already, a huge grin on his face as he saw Heero enter.
"Happy Easter, Heero!" the braided boy said as he reached down beside him to pull a good-sized Easter basket full of goodies into view.
Heero was shocked. He hadn't been expected that. He remembered the gift in his hand and held it out to the other boy. "Happy Easter, Duo. I hope you like it."
Heero joined Duo on the couch and began unwrapping his basket to find all kinds of chocolate and sugary candy. There was also a model airplane, a set of metal cars, and a pack of army men. Heero had never had any toys as a child; Duo apparently had intended to make up for that. He looked over to see Duo open the velvet box, only to hear the other boy gasp when he saw what was inside.
"Oh, Heero. They're beautiful!" he cried out as he pulled Heero into a fierce hug. Sitting in the box were a pair of gold cross earrings that matched his cross necklace perfectly. When Duo pulled away, he removed one and inserted it into his ear immediately, still grinning at his friend.
Heero smiled as he touched the metal cars, overcome with the feelings the gift gave him. It was odd how something so simple could mean so much. He cleared his throat and said in a confused voice, "I didn't think you'd want to celebrate the pagan side of the holiday."
Duo laughed. "Well, I didn't think you'd want to celebrate the religious side."
Heero smiled. "Well, I wasn't planning to go to Mass, if that's what you mean. Are you?"
Duo gave him a funny look, but then looked down at the remaining cross earring and smiled. "Heero, I don't have to go to church to remember why I celebrate today. I mean, it's the faith of Father Maxwell and Sister Helen that kept me going through the war, even when I was being Shinigami. I've found peace now, and I don't have to go to church to have that because it's right here in my heart." He looked at Heero, his violet eyes shining. "I think sharing the day together with those you love is the best of both worlds, don't you?" He took the other earring out of the box and placed it in Heero's hand.
Heero nodded in understanding. He'd just gotten his ear pieced a couple months ago. He put the cross in and smiled back at his friend. "Then I tell you what. There's a 'Ten Commandments' marathon on. Why don't we watch it, and then we can color Easter eggs when the movie is over."
Duo grinned. "That sounds perfect."
Duo turned on the television, and Heero reached into his basket, pulling out a pack of Peeps and a peanut butter egg. He handed them to Duo who grinned even more. They sat on the couch, enjoying each other's company, realizing that Easter was going to become a holiday they both would love to celebrate.
Chocolate bunnies and golden crosses somehow did belong together.
The End
