Flight by tkmaxwell777

Duo looked through the open office door, bag handles clasped in his hand. His gaze fell on the occupant of the chair and felt his heart ache. Dark hair obscured the other man's face as he looked out of the window, seeming to be deep in thought, and hands were uncharacteristically devoid of motion as they rested on the desk. It had been a little over a month since Mariemaia had been defeated, but Heero Yuy was already a part of the new peace force. Duo could remember when Une had visited the Wing pilot in the hospital. Duo had watched as Heero outright refused to join Preventers. Two weeks later, Wufei had emailed the braided man. Heero had shown up and asked to be assigned.

Duo had known it would happen sooner or later. In fact, he was sure that he'd end up being a Preventer with the other two men before the end of the day, especially since Wufei had told him that they were having trouble finding Heero a suitable partner. Once again, he would follow the other man to keep him safe while he fought for what he believed in. Duo couldn't deny that the need to fight for peace never seemed to end once you accepted that heavy responsibility. There was no way you could continue to walk away when you knew you could make a difference, and that was something Duo could do. There was just one thing that he had to take care of before he decided to offer his skills once again. Knocking on the door, he called out, "Heero?"

Heero looked over at him, dark blue eyes widening slightly. "Duo? What are you doing here?" He'd just been wondering about the other man for some reason. He didn't want to admit it, but the holiday was beginning to get to him. Everyone assumed that Relena was his sweetheart, and had kept asking him what she had sent him. 'Nothing' had been his reply all day. When Heero had joined Preventers, Relena had told him that she needed him by her side if they were going to be more than friends. Heero had been forced to choose, and even though he cared for Relena, he felt his duty to her was over. His skills demanded that he use them to maintain the peace they had all worked so hard to attain. He couldn't deny it... not even for her.

Duo watched the emotions dance across Heero's face and wondered at the saddened expression. Lifting up the gift bag, he grinned, trying to lighten the mood. "Special delivery for one Heero Yuy."

The former Wing pilot furrowed his brows. "What are you talking about?"

"It's Valentine's Day, you idiot," Duo informed him jovially. "I wanted to surprise you."

"But... shouldn't you be with Hilde?" Heero asked with a confused look on his face. Duo had come all this way to bring him something for Valentine's Day when he had someone at home? That didn't make any sense...

Duo laughed. "Sure... if I want her boyfriend to skewer me." Violet-blue eyes glinted in amusement. "He already thinks we spend too much time together at the yard, so I don't think sharing dinner with them would be a good idea."

Heero stared at him for a moment, trying to rearrange his worldview with that little tidbit of information. "So you came to see me instead?"

Duo placed the bag on Heero's desk. "Yep."

The dark-haired man reached out and touched the bow stuck on the front. "Why me?"

Duo pulled the chair from the other desk and sat down close enough to brush his knee against Heero's. "Because this is the day you celebrate being with the one person who makes your heart feel free."

Heero flinched from the surprise contact, his eyes snapping up from the bag to meet Duo's. Seeing Duo's sincere look, he relaxed, and their knees touched again. It was pleasant, feeling the warmth coming off of the other man, but he was still unsure of what Duo was trying to say. The most intelligent response he could come up with at the moment was, "What?"

"Just open it, Heero." Duo watched as his friend hesitated. This was it. This was what he had struggled with all the way to Earth. It would determine whether or not he was going to be Heero's partner and friend, partner and lover, or all of the above.

Heero swallowed and then reached inside the bag, pushing aside the tissue paper. When his hand met something hard, he pulled it out. It was a small three-dimensional plaque of an eagle in flight with mountains and a stream underneath it. The feathers were spread wide, like they were gliding on the wind. "Soaring on wings of freedom, held up by the hope of greater heights," he read quietly.

"That's how you make me feel, Heero," Duo whispered, afraid and yet needing to tell the other man. "You make my heart fly without even trying." He smiled at Heero's shocked look. "You always have, even when we were fighting and thought we would die." Relena would be receiving roses from Duo sometime today no matter where in space she was. "You inspire me to protect the things I love." She had contacted Duo a week ago, letting him know that she and Heero had decided to not pursue a romantic relationship since he'd become an agent. "And you are one of those things." It had given Duo the courage to reach out to the one he wanted to be with for as long as he lived.

Heero turned his eyes back to the man who had been his comrade during both wars, and his friend in those times in between, seeing the truth of his words in his violet-blue eyes. He remembered how Duo had been there when he'd awakened after the final battle, sitting by his bedside with a worried look. He'd been surprised when the other man had stayed on for a few days until Heero had been released. At the time, he'd wondered why Duo had remained for so long, but he'd reasoned it away when the braided pilot had left and returned to the scrap yard. Heero had thought that Duo was returning to the woman he loved as well. Now...

"How can you... why do you... when... I don't understand," he finally managed to get out, searching Duo's face.

Duo placed his hand on Heero's cheek, smoothing over the soft skin and patches of stubble from where Heero hadn't shaved well that morning. "Let me see if I can clarify it for you."

Anxious eyes watched as lips moved closer. Mouths finally met, tentative and nervous at first, but then gaining in confidence when neither man pulled away from the feeling of brushing them together. Heero's hand grasped Duo's arm, not to push him away but to hold him in place. Duo slid his hand to Heero's neck, fingers sliding into the short hair at the nape. The kiss deepened, tongues licking out experimentally. Groans of mutual acceptance signaled their surrender, and Duo was soon straddling Heero's lap, both of them needing to get as close as possible without having to remove clothes. One of Duo's hands was buried in Heero's wild hair while the other held his face gently to tilt it. Heero's arms slipped around Duo's waist and grabbed hold of his braid, rubbing it rhythmically. The kiss seemed to last forever and yet not long enough for either of them. Both men were panting when their lips finally parted, and all they could do was gaze at each other in awe.

"Do you really want to be with me?" Heero asked, still stunned by the turn of events.

Duo smiled. "Only if you want a partner who will watch your back because he can't live without you."

The former Wing pilot smiled back shyly. "Then I guess that's a 'yes' because I do... want you, I mean." His face reddened a bit. He'd never thought of Duo that way, but knowing the depth of the other man's feeling gave him the will to try. "I don't know if you'll be happy with me, but I guess we won't know unless we give into it, right?"

"Giving into it is most of the fun," Duo quipped mischievously, thrusting his hips. "The rest is giving into it more."

Heero tried to catch his breath from just that one movement. This was going to take some getting used to, but he was confident that he was up to the task. In fact, the 'up' part was making its presence known quite obviously, and Duo seemed to know it too, because he moved again. Heero sighed. "I'll just have to trust you on that."

"Oh, no," the braided man reassured him, "you won't have to take my word for it. When we're done talking with Une, I'm taking you back to my hotel room for a little demonstration." He'd planned it out in his mind already, and Duo couldn't wait to make it happen. Heero was going to be his completely.

"Yeah?" Heero asked breathlessly, his hands clenching at Duo's hips.

"Oh, yeah," Duo replied smugly. "I've been waiting for a long time for this."

They leaned forward and kissed again, losing themselves all over again. When they pulled away, Duo panted out, "Let's get this over with then. I bet Une will be so happy, she'll give you a week off with pay for recruiting me."

Heero shook his head, trying to clear it. "I doubt it. More likely, she'll hand you a uniform and stack of files for some case she's been waiting to give to me when I finally got a partner."

Duo laughed, thinking that Heero looked a lot happier than he had when Duo had first come through the office door. "Well, I guess you're just gonna be stuck with me then. I doubt anyone else will offer such fringe benefits." He stood up, but before he could turn away, Heero leaned forward and kissed him.

"Sounds pretty good to me," the former Wing pilot said as he pressed his forehead to Duo's.

Duo then hugged him tightly, breathing into his ear. "Yeah. Me too."

They held each other, just getting used to the feeling of being in each other's arms. The silence wasn't intrusive or uncomfortable, just a counterpoint to the soft breathing and gentle hands that moved over their bodies as they shared the moment. Like the kisses, it seemed to linger for an eternity yet end in a split second. As they let each other go, Heero pushed Duo's bangs out of his eyes.

"I want to find those heights with you, Duo. Do you... do you really think I can?"

Duo kissed him one more time and then smiled. "I know you can, Heero. If there's anyone who knows how to flap his wings and fly, it's you, and you're going to have someone beside you who will never let you fall to the ground."
