Thoughts in /blah/, emphasized words/italics in *blah*. And I've probably twisted some things here or there, but…. ^;; oh well. All sections marked with a date are in the present time, all others are in flashbacks. A million thankies to Lizard-chan for beta-ing. ^

A Kiss From A Rose by Asuka

There used to be a greying tower alone on the sea

--A.C. 197--

Shades of pink mingled with the soft blue of the sky. Light of sunset played along the water's rippling. Amber illuminated the heavens and earth.

A lone figure stood at the edge of the cliff, ruins of a deserted castle behind him. Waves crashed against the rocky terrain below, the song of the sea was the only thing heard amidst silence. A gentle ocean breeze played with his hair, freeing an occasional wisp of onyx. The sun had begun to fall asleep, drifting back into its resting place. Its fire blazed across the horizon, bringing slight life to the glum structure that once housed one of the most influential men of the times. Once, so long ago... And now only memories were left.

You became the light on the dark side of me

"You know you're my only weakness."

"Why are you telling me this?"

"Because I feel we should be truly honest with each other."

Obsidian eyes held confusion. "But I'm your enemy."

A smile. "Maybe so," /but never to my heart./ "You're my last chance at redemption."

Love remains a drug that's the high and not the pill

The boy slipped past security with ease, sliding through the twisting corridors whose path had been memorized long before, almost automatic now. /Why do I keep returning to see him, time and time again? Could I be...?/ His mind denied it, but there remained an unsettling feeling in his chest.

But did you know that when it snows
My eyes become large
And the light that you shine can't be seen?

Wufei watched the television screen as Treize Khushernada spoke before the masses. Such ferocity, such ruthlessness, all hidden behind a smooth mask, held firmly in place. He saw things that had stayed unseen before his eyes while in his lover's presence. He didn't understand how someone could have two sides to himself, a true and a false. /But who are you to judge?/ He was ashamed as his own philosophies slapped him in the face. /Where is the justice in betraying your comrades, secretly rendezvousing with the enemy?/

Baby, I compare you to a kiss from the rose on the grey

There were so many things he didn't know about his lover, so many faces to fit one person.

Ooh, the more I get of you, the stranger it feels

/When did this all begin, I wonder; this little affair of ours. My mind refuses to cooperate. I'm losing control.../

Graceful hands raked through ginger hair.

/And strangely enough, I don't seem to care any longer. Not about how those ebony eyes enchanted me. Not about how I lose my composure whenever he's around. Not about how he's captured my heart./

Now that your rose is in bloom
A light hits the gloom on the grey

Metal clashes, flickers of silver gleam with each hit. The battle is short yet intense as one of the dueling partners receives the upper hand.

"Kill me."

"I can't do that."

"Do it! If you don't finish this now, I'll only return to attempt assassination again." /Please don't make me./

"I look forward to our next battle, then."

The Chinese boy stood, retreating to the solace of his Gundam. All the while, azure eyes watched his every move. /But every time you leave, I'm already dead./

There is so much a man can tell you
So much he can say

Mussed sheets litter the bed, limbs entangled, two bodies pressing against each other. Silence fills the room.

An interruption.

"Wufei, I... "

Coal orbs search his face, waiting.

"It's nothing, never mind."

The boy accepts, not wanting to press the issue. If Treize had disregarded it, it must've not been important.

You remain my power, my pleasure, my pain

The OZ general sighs absently as he twirls the flower in his hand. He is in his office, left alone to sift through the thoughts in his head and the feelings in his heart.

/'A rose by any other name'.../ He stops to smell the sweet fragrance of the blossom, pricking a finger in the process. /Even roses come with thorns, just as something too good to be true isn't./

Baby, to me, you're like a growing
Addiction that I can't deny

They are in the bed once again, wrapped in one another's embrace.

"This can't go on forever."

The smaller individual snuggles closer. "I know, but we should at least enjoy it while it lasts."

Won't you tell me, is that healthy, baby?

Eyes stare forlornly at the ceiling above. /You're endangering your ideal with this liaison./

He turned his vision to the sleeping dragon beside him.

/Or maybe I'm only strengthening it./

But did you know that when it snows
My eyes become large
And the light that you shine can't be seen?

A ringing sound wakes the slumbering couple. /Damn, who could it be, now?/ Treize groggily answers it, the monitor of the comm link switching on.

"Your Excellency, it seems we have a problem at hand. A meeting is being held shortly. We need your orders concerning the matter."

The comm link shuts down, the man shuffling to retrieve his clothes. Wufei looks at him. He realizes the eyes he is peering in are foreign to him. They are cold as ice, veiled by diplomacy and determination.

Baby, I compare you to a kiss from a rose on the grey
Ooh, the more I get of you, the stranger it feels

"This can't go on forever." /Although I wish it could./

Now that your rose is in bloom

"I know, but we should at least enjoy it while it lasts." /And I wish that it could be for always. What would I do without you?/

A light hits the gloom on the grey

A wordless truce is sealed.

I've been kissed by a rose on the grey

Nataku rips through the vastness of space. This would be the final battle; he knew it. But at what cost?

I've been kissed by a rose on the grey

The Gundam's monitor clicks off as the incoming transmission fades away.

His last words.

Tears that Wufei never knew were there began their trek down his face.

/Treize.../

And if I should fall, will it all go away?

/By my own hand... This can't be./

"I won't accept this!" /Take me with you./

There is so much a man can tell you
So much he can say

Tallgeese II's speakers crackle as static interrupts the communication system.

"I've always loved you... My eternal friend... No, more than that..."

The voice fades as the mecha explodes among the stars.

You remain my power, my pleasure, my pain

--A.C. 197--

Baby, to me you're like a growing
Addiction that I can't deny

Wufei stands before the cliff, his white trenchcoat loose and softly swaying in the breeze.

/Treize... Even now I can't forget you. Can't forget the smell of your skin... The taste of your lips... Your tender touch... The sound of your voice.../

Won't you tell me, is that healthy, baby?

/But for how long will I continue this? How much longer will I be able to remember?/

He smirked, sad and knowing. /The Fates' cruel twist... If only it hadn't been that way… But it was inevitable, wasn't it? Our last battle.../

But did you know that when it snows
My eyes become large
And the light that you shine can't be seen?

"So why didn't you kill me?"

"I could never kill someone who understood me fully."

The final blow.

Baby, I compare you to a kiss from a rose on the grey
Ooh, the more I get of you, the stranger it feels

--A.C. 197--

/I guess we did know each other...could comprehend. Two warriors fighting for the same cause but through different tactics... I guess I understood you more than anyone ever could have./

Now that your rose is in bloom
A light hits the gloom on the grey

The sky shone brighter than ever, a beautiful blush painting the heavens. The salty sea air continued to waft around the premise, synonymous with the ocean ripples churning towards the shore underneath.

"This is goodbye, Treize." /I loved you. And I still do./

The Chinese boy scattered the roses into the watery depths below, red petal traces flying with the breeze.

This would be the last time.

And as he eyed the delicate blooms dance with the foaming waves, he saw the eyes of the man he so loved, the same color as the ocean blue.

Yes, I compare you to a kiss from a rose...

The End
