White Linen by Mookie

"What does the word 'fresh' suggest to you?"

Heero's hands, busy with the buttons on his shirt, halted. He turned toward the speaker with a quizzical look on his face.

Duo reached over and straightened Heero's collar, pulling the corner free from his tie. He couldn't say he minded the uniforms here. They sure as hell beat the clothes he'd been forced to wear to school a long time ago.

"Bread," Heero said at last. "I think of bread."

Duo thought that was the end of the conversation, and he buttoned his jacket and turned to go when Heero's voice stopped him in his tracks.

"What does it suggest to you?"

A smirk tugged at Duo's lips as he recalled the admonishment he'd often received at school, warning him to curb his tongue. He turned back to give Heero a flippant response when he was hit with the realization that Heero honestly wanted to know.

Duo licked his lips as Heero approached. A swarm of butterflies established residence in his stomach as the other pilot's hands came up and adjusted his tie, smoothing the ends until callused fingertips grazed Duo's starched school shirt, making a zipping sound as the skin dragged across the crisp linen.

Unbidden, images of those hands wandering over white linen of an entirely different sort played through his mind, and he swallowed.

"Duo?" Heero's breath was warm against his face.

"A new beginning," he said firmly. "An opportunity to avoid repeating mistakes of the past."

Heero's other hand squeezed Duo's upper arm briefly and then it dropped to his side. His eyes met and held Duo's for several moments before he gave a very brief nod and walked toward the door. When his shoulder brushed past Duo's, the Deathscythe pilot closed his eyes and inhaled deeply, taking in the scent of bath soap and laundry detergent.

He followed Heero out of the room and closed the door behind them. They made eye contact for the second time that morning.

Heero turned his head and the two of them walked side by side down the hall on their way to their first class. When the instructor began her lecture on revolutions throughout history, and the determination of the oppressed classes to overcome what they perceived as tyranny, Duo's eyes flicked over to Heero, who lifted his pencil and brushed the bangs out of his eyes. Duo didn't miss the subtle salute he'd been given.

He mouthed three words to Heero, who nodded and bent his head over his desk to scribble on his paper the very words he'd read on Duo's lips.

To new beginnings.

The corners of Heero's lips curled up slightly. He'd be more than happy to show Duo exactly what being 'fresh' was all about.

Bread wasn't the only thing that he could get a rise out of.
