Chapter Two

The cabin was one of many in a long row. The others were, without exception, all empty right now. They were only supposed to be open for rental at all during the summer, but there were some advantages to being rich enough to get your own way. Odin had been a lot of things, but he hadn't been a fool about money. He had left Heero enough in a trust fund that the young man had never had to work a day in his life.

Heero seldom took advantage of his inheritance; preferring to live on the second hand items he and Trowa scrounged out of thrift shops, and living mainly off the little money he had writing book reviews for a local paper. This was yet another sore spot between himself and Ruth. The first time she saw his apartment, he thought she was going to have a heart attack. "Not a very nice place to bring a girl, is it?" She had sniffed finally. He had come very close to telling her that most of the guys he brought here didn't mind it, but had thought better of it. Ruth wasn't quite ready yet to learn that he preferred playing with other boys, so to speak.

He parked the car, and carried his bags up the wooden steps, unlocking the cabin door and nudging it open. He expected a cloud of dust to greet him, but the inside had been cleaned so recently it still smelled like lemons. He did a quick examination of the facilities, making sure things like electricity and water were functioning, as well as heat in case it grew cold. Finally satisfied, he unpacked his bags and lay back on the bed. The jet lag hit him at last, and before another few minutes had went by he was sound asleep, still wearing his leather jacket and shoes, but sleeping for more peacefully than he had in twenty years.

Bleary-eyed, Heero reached out in the semi-darkness to slap at the alarm clock, before realizing it was his cell phone ringing from his jacket pocket. He fumbled around, yanking it out and hitting talk.

"Yello?"

"Hey. Been trying to call you." Trowa's voice rang out. "Happy Birthday! You get there okay?"

"What? Oh yeah, just fine." Heero yawned. "Cabin's great."

"Sorry I woke you."

"Nah, it's okay. Need to get some dinner anyway." Heero shook himself a little more awake. "How's it going there?"

"Going excellent, my man. I've got a date tonight."

"Congrats. Anyone I know?"

"Someone you've seen." He could just hear Trowa's smile through the phone.

"BLONDIE?"

"He wrote his phone number on the menu he gave he last night."

Heero laughed. "Way to go."

"His name is Quatre, by the way, and he's our age, older than he looks. We talked for a long time earlier; he's really smart. You'll love him."

"I'm sure I will."

"Oh, gotta run. Have to get ready. Should I wear a tie, or just go to the door naked?"

"I'd say naked, but you'd probably do it." Heero snickered again. "Have fun. And I want details."

"I never kiss and tell." Trowa said in a proper voice. "Talk to you later, man."

Heero clicked off the phone and sat it on the bed, reaching over and turning on the light. He checked his watch, and was surprised to see it was pushing eight already. He was more surprised that he wasn't really hungry.

He wandered around the cabin a bit, looking for something to do. He had a stack of books, but right now nothing appealed to him. He tried the television, but even with the two hundred channels the satellite provided, he could still find nothing to peak his interest.

He considered for a minute, and then grabbed his portable radio off the table, and headed out the door, not bothering to lock the cabin behind him. It didn't take very long to reach the edge of the lake, and he froze for a moment.

It was like having a dream, and then finding out it was real. The lake was exactly like he remembered from his childhood; still and solemn and pure. The same tree branches dangled overhead, the same rocks jutted out at various points. The same steep hill rose just behind the water. Even the wooden boat at the edge looked the same, although he knew it was not.

He bent over the boat, running his hands along the wood, and picking up an oar. "Guess I'll have to do it myself this time, Papa." He said into the still night, and an owl answered. He put his radio inside, and gave the craft a shove, climbing in as it became waterborne.
