Is it true -
Do angels fly away?*~

[Ain't no sunshine when he's gone ]

Brilliant orange spilled through the rooms, now strewn with boxes. The furniture had been sold, the rest covered with sheets. Dust had begun to accumulate over the past few days. A silent figure eyed the premise. One last time. It picked up its suitcases, somberly walking out the door and shutting it behind him.

[It's not warm when he's away ]

A chill shuddered up the man's spine as he stepped out of the complex once and for all. He never believed it would come to this. But all the pain, the memories, were locked inside there, and it was too much to bear. He needed to get away.

He was closing a chapter of his life.

[Ain't no sunshine when he's gone
And he's always gone too long anytime he goes away ]

Almost two years had past since the fateful day that Duo Maxwell had walked out of Heero Yuy's life. The former Gundam pilot often caught himself engulfed in a search for a certain braided boy, but always led to failure. No one or thing had heard of any entity named "Duo Maxwell" in well over 4 years. Most assumed he was dead. Heero sincerely hoped not... He hadn't had the chance to tell his former lover his true feelings, and now he thought he finally had them figured out - for the most part.

Heero served as a back-up Preventer, being Relena Peacecraft's bodyguard as a full-time job. Because of his job, he had been able to rise above a little socially, and had earned a significant amount of money. If he wanted, he could have quit anytime - he had enough money to support three if he wanted. But the ex-Wing pilot didn't; he needed something - anything - to take his mind off the turmoil in his heart. The emptiness. So he filled it with something - a new mission. And that was protecting Relena. It wasn't a job he had preferred. In fact, Heero couldn't stomach it, but he didn't know who else to turn to. Quatre had his business, Trowa had the circus and Quatre, Wufei was a Preventer, and...

[Wonder this time where he's gone
Wonder if he's gone to stay ]

The dark haired boy typed away on that same laptop, a familiar companion whose company he both loathed and enjoyed. It was easy to hack into the main database. Some of that training had some use other than the war, after all. Typing the name of his old companion in the query, he hit the 'enter' key and waited. Nothing. Hacking further through deeper layers and walls, he was able to recover one file: the last known document still in Duo's name. Heero had guessed that the baka had deleted all of his files manually. Yes, Duo was good, but not good enough. There had been one flaw that enabled him to find the entry - Duo had carelessly forgotten to clean up after himself. Sipping the welcome caffiene-loaded coffee, he scrolled through the file. Indeed, it was Duo's, the Duo Heero knew. The description matched perfectly, only... /L3? But didn't Duo live on L2 once? Then why would he choose L3 of all places?/ Oh well; it didn't matter now. The least he could do was check the place out to see if it *was* the right person.

[Ain't no sunshine when he's gone ]

He closed the compact computer, its blue light diminishing. Heero strolled across his house, noting its dimness and the dreary weather outside.

[And this house just ain't no home anytime he goes away ]

He moved his hand across the cold desk, over the chilly table, the icy cabinets. Even though he had bought the place with his own money, it didn't feel quite the same as his apartment had been. There, it was always cozy, a warm feeling enveloping the place. And now this house was dark and cool, a nonchalant air to it. But Duo had lived with him in the previous, his personal warmth giving a loving fire to it. Duo was gone, out of reach, and it showed in the atmosphere. Would he ever get that feeling back?

[And I know, I know, I know, I know, I know
I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know ]

He set his mug down, the liquid's steam rising in puffs. Leaning on a chair, he eyed his environment. He wanted that glow back. He needed it. The former pilot paced the room. But *how* would he get Duo to come back to him? Heero didn't know what to do. He could patch and repair anything mechanical, but his training hadn't included patching up romantic relationships.

[I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know ]

Running a hand through his thick tousled hair, Heero eyed the tiny print-out in his hand. He could try to contact Duo. Talk to him. Make him listen. Hadn't Duo told him to come back to him when he had his feelings straightened out? And he did... At least he though so...*hoped* so.

Heero knew what he had to do. But first... there was one thing left to accomplish...

[I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know ]

Relena Peacecraft paced back and forth in her office, worry creeping upon her brow. /Heero said he wanted to talk to me? About what? He never wished to speak with me before; I wonder what this is about.../ The confusion was too much for her, and she collasped on her sofa, an arm shielding her eyes from view. What was Heero up to? Had he finally accepted her proposal?

Heero involuntarily broke into a sweat. In the back of his mind, he had everything planned out. He'd tell Relena, and then walk out before she had a chance to object. But would things go as planned? Relena loved to be over dramatic, especially when it came to him. She'd probably cry or clutch onto him like a leech to try and stop him from leaving. But nothing would stop him from being with Duo. He meant everything to him, and he wasn't about to let him go.

[Hey, I ought to leave the young thing alone ]

Heero gulped as he pushed the cherry wood door engraved with gold open. It creaked slightly, much to his dismay. "I have an appointment with Ms. Peacecraft," he informed her receptionist. The girl nodded, remarking about how Relena was expecting him, and that she was waiting in her office. The Japanese boy simply nodded and proceeded to the vice-minister's headquarters. He didn't bother with knocking; he easily barged in, surprising an unsuspecting Relena.

[But ain't no sunshine when he's gone, only darkness everyday ]

The ex-Gundam pilot held his breath. The room was dim, accommodating the atmosphere. The former Queen of the World sat at her desk, her chin resting on her intwined fingers. "Please, take a seat." She motioned to the chair opposite her desk. Heero did as he was told, his stoic expression unfaltering. "Heero," the blonde began again, "I understand that you have...something...to talk to me about?" Although her face remained calm, the despairing hope in her eyes betrayed her, and the dark haired boy noticed it.

[Ain't no sunshine when he's gone ]

"Relena, I've come to turn in my resignation. I can no longer work as your bodyguard,"

Relena flinched. "But Heero, I don't understand. Why?"

He shifted in his seat uneasily. He had hoped he didn't have to explain himself, but he had given up on that when she invited him to a seat. "There is...something....important...I must do. And if I don't, I may regret it forever."

[And this house just ain't no home anytime he goes away ]

The vice-minister's eyes searched Heero. "I understand. Is it about... is it about Duo?" she gulped.

Heero turned away. He knew that she knew that they had a sort of connection, but not what *kind* it was. "Yes, it's about Duo. I was lost until him... And now, it's he that I have lost. I won't lose him again. I'm going to find him... because I...l-...*care*...for him."

[Anytime he goes away ]

Heero closed his eyes, remembering how his lover had stormed out of their home in a tearful haze. He remembered the pain in the room. The anguish. The loneliness.

If walls could talk...

[Anytime he goes away ]

Heero's last comment felt like a direct blow to Relena. Despite all of the time they had spent together, and the many proposals she had asked him, she was never able to win his heart, not in the way that a certain braided violet-eyed boy had been able to. She fought back tears, and stood up, extending a hand. "I see... Well then, you'd have better be on your way. I wish you...and Duo...the best of luck." Heero stood and shook her hand. She was smiling a pained but genuine smile.

[Anytime he goes away ]

He faintly returned her smile, saying, "Thank you, Relena. Good bye." He turned, and walked out of her life. That was the last time the Peacecraft daughter would ever see him.

[Anytime he goes away ]
