Sidestory/epilogue to 'The Edulcoration Of Duo Maxwell'

It was quiet on the other side of the door. Duo fumbled with his keys, looking for the correct one, and let himself in. It was possible Heero hadn't returned from his court appearance yet, and they'd long gotten into the habit of letting themselves in to each other's apartments.

It hadn't happened right away. Duo had felt a little awkward the day that Heero had held out his hand, a key dangling from one finger. He could still remember the way the light had caught on the blue tinted metal. When he'd added it to his own key ring, it stood out like a sore thumb, proclaiming its presence among the other pieces of silver colored steel.

He closed the door behind him, pocketing his keys, and headed for the kitchen when he heard a slurred hello coming from the living room. He reversed direction, pausing at the sight of Heero stretched out on the couch.

Heero couldn't have been home for long. He was still dressed in his charcoal gray slacks, shirt and pants unbuttoned. He was scratching his belly lightly. As Duo's gaze fell on him, his hand dropped to his side and he smiled up at Duo.

"Feet cold?" Duo glanced at Heero's bent leg and where his foot was buried between couch and cushions before closing the distance between them and sitting on the edge of the sofa. He ran his hand along Heero's side as he leaned over to drop a kiss on slightly pouting lips. Heero hummed in approval, the hand that had been dangling over the arm of the couch reaching up and fingers burying in Duo's hair. The ends of the silk tie Heero still held were a minor annoyance, but Duo ignored it, sliding his hand under Heero's shoulder blade and sprawling half over the bare torso beneath him.

Heero's other foot kicked his jacket off the sofa and he worked his leg between Duo's, encouraging the other man to further stretch out atop him. The kiss continued for a bit longer before Duo reluctantly pulled back, brushing Heero's bangs out of his eyes. He removed the tie from Heero's lax fingers and tossed it onto the nearby coffee table, then propped himself up on one elbow as he stared down into stormy blue irises.

"How'd it go?" he asked quietly.

Heero swallowed then closed his eyes and shook his head slightly from side to side.

Duo didn't press him for information. He laid his head down on Heero's chest and squeezed Heero tightly with the arm that was fast falling asleep beneath Heero. He felt Heero's fingers stroking his hair before a kiss dropped on his head.

Eventually Duo would get as much of the story as Heero was allowed to share, just as Heero would hear the reasons for Duo's discontent when a business deal inadvertently caused a significant loss of jobs.

Duo listened to Heero's heartbeat and the slow steady breaths he took, and he turned his head to kiss Heero's neck. He didn't think he'd ever get tired of coming home to Heero, no matter whose apartment he was in.

The corner of his lips quirked against Heero's collarbone.

Sometimes the best decisions of his life came at the most unexpected times, and this was one of them. He'd already been considering it for the past few months even though he'd known that Heero had been ready long before that.

He'd tell Heero later, after a shower and something to eat, and maybe a good night's sleep.

He could feel the way the keys in his pocket pressed against his thigh, trapped between their bodies. He knew that soon there would be one less key on his ring.

Duo lifted his head again and kissed Heero a second time.

No, he thought, he'd never be tired of coming home to this.
