Happily Ever After by MadCat

Part One

"Heero! Heeeeero!!" Relena called, waving to the dark-haired young man striding purposefully across the campus. There was no response, but his braided companion turned toward her, grinning. "Ohayo, ojousan!" Duo chirped, grinning. Heero finally glanced in her direction, his cobalt eyes flat and intense.

"Anou... Heero!" she smiled brightly. "I found you again! I've missed you!" The only reply was a small grunt, then he turned away. "Maybe next time, Relena-san! Ja ne!" Duo wiggled his fingers, smiling, before turning and bouncing after his companion.

Relena's smile faded slowly. "Heero..." she whispered to the empty air. "I... love you..."

Relena opened the door to her bedroom with a quiet sigh. She stared into the empty room for a moment, eyes moving over the pale pink of the walls, the bedspread; her stuffed animals and toys were neatly arranged, remnants of her childhood. She sighed softly, shutting the door with a click, then leaned against it for a moment. Her eyes closed.

So empty; her room, her heart. Slowly she slid to the floor, tucking her knees against her chest, glancing over at a little clown that had been a birthday present from her adopted father a few years ago. A birthday he had not attended. Like all the others. She stared at it for a moment. Never there... no one was ever there for her. Not her father; his work came first. Not her "friends" who always followed her, constantly chanting, "Relena-sama! Relena-sama!" They envied her fortune, her life of privilege; they followed her like sycophants because she was Relena Darlian Peacecraft. They didn't like her because she was just Relena.

But when HE said her name... it was just "Relena." Not Relena-sama. Not Relena Peacecraft. Her dark prince, who fell from the sky to end her loneliness, to fill the aching void she felt in her life, every moment of every day. "Heero... " she whispered, tears slowly filling her eyes. "I know you love me... you have to love me! You have to... save me... T-take me away... "

She put her face in her hands and sobbed.

"I've found you again," she murmured, looking out the window of her personal limo. Another school, like all the others. But HE was here. She took a deep breath and closed her eyes. Gathering her resolve, she nodded to the driver, who opened the door. She stepped out into the sunlight, feeling it warm against her face. The same glow she felt when he looked her way, those intense eyes boring into hers for only an instant... but it was enough. Enough to know they were meant for each other, for eternity. She smiled. "Heero..." she murmured.

His room was on the first floor; he was sharing it with that idiot Maxwell, like always. Why does he even bother hanging around with that American? she thought disdainfully. Striding toward the door, she was about to knock when she heard a sound from within; a soft, fluttering moan, followed by the creak of mattress springs. Her breath caught in her throat. What in the world...? What was going on in there? She knelt slowly, her heart pounding, and put her eye to the keyhole.

And her heart stopped. Her Heero... her shining prince... and that... that... that horrible, horrible Maxwell boy were.... Her hand flew over her mouth, stifling a gasp of revulsion and agony, as her heart clenched painfully in her chest. "No... " She whispered, numb.

"Unh! D-Duo... Duo... I l-love you!" Heero groaned, sinking deep inside his partner one last time, shuddering with ecstasy. <I love you.... no! NO! He's supposed to say that to me! To ME!! Not anyone else! Not him! Not HIM!!!> She was gasping for breath; her heart seemed to shatter, and she had to move, had to get away. She ran from the building, tears streaming from her cheeks. Her prince... her knight, who was supposed to rescue her from the ivory tower... was lost to her forever.

The door slammed behind Relena as she entered her room, breath still coming in harsh gasps. Her eyes darted around the room, wildly. No! No! This wasn't how it worked. The white knight rescued the princess; he rode in on his white charger and took her away; he didn't fall in love with the black knight! It wasn't right! It wasn't fair!

"You were supposed to love me," she sobbed to the empty room, to her absent prince. "Me!! ME!!!" She slammed her hands against the wall, then jerked away. Sweeping her arms over the top of her desk, she sent its contents crashing to the floor. It felt good. Her perfect world was crumbling around her; but at least here she had control.

Her eyes landed on the round mirror on her wall. Her fist followed soon after. The crack of shattering glass, the crunch of bone on impact, felt good. She stared at the shards of glass, at the blood flowing over her knuckles, her breath a harsh rasp in her throat. She felt calmer now. In control. <I can control this. I can control anything.>

"He can't take you away from me, Heero... " she murmured, a slow smile spreading over her face. "That isn't how the story goes." Kneeling carefully, she gingerly retrieved a large shard of glass from the floor. Her reflection stared back at her from its surface, still smiling as she turned toward her bed, picking up the teddy bear that lay against her pillow.

"It's all that boy's fault, you know," she remarked thoughtfully to her teddy bear. "That horrible American boy. If he weren't in the way, Heero would love me. Since the first time I saw him, I knew he was evil. He hurt my Heero, you know. Shot him twice." She moved the bear's head up and down, making it nod in agreement, before snuggling it lovingly.

She stared into its black button eyes, overlaid with the memory of shining amethyst, sparkling; a low voice mocking her... "Maybe next time, Relena-san! Ja ne!" Her delicate features contorted, her face a mask of rage. Viciously, she impaled her teddy bear with the shard she held.

"Bye bye," she giggled. "He's mine now. All mine, forever! All mine!" She continued rocking her teddy bear gently, crooning soothing nothings in its plush ear, as the sunlight sparkled off jagged glass.
