Seasonal Drift by Ebonydove

Part Eleven

I heard the words. They buzzed around in my head making the slow spin I was feeling suddenly tilt. I knew what he was asking and at that moment I couldn't have cared if he had just told me that he was plotting to take over the universe with the help of aliens from a distant planet. His wide, bottomless blue eyes bore into mine and I knew that I would risk it all to stay by his side and see this thing through to its end, even if it went from bad to worse. I smiled at him and the look that passed across his face in the next instant was painfully beautiful. He knew my mind. He knew I was going to stay no matter what. It was as if in that moment, something drifted between us and we were instantly, irretrievably bound together. I swear; it was almost as if gravity itself was pulling us towards one another making it simply senseless to resist.

I eased back into him kissing him slowly and watched his eyes slip closed. I could feel his whole body relax under mine as I took my time to be slow and gentle. Ignoring the heavy press of time and how my mind was rattling with senseless babble trying to tell me to say something, anything. But I knew that any words I uttered in that moment would break the spell that carefully wrapped itself around us so concentrating on the way he felt under me, the way he smelled and tasted, I let my hands and kisses tell him what my heart was feeling. It was almost funny to me how easy he felt in my arms, but at the same time so strange. Terrifyingly strange. I pulled him closer to me and began to kiss his face, his jaw and the nape of his neck. His powerful body seemed to vibrate with an odd sense of urgency against mine as I moved my lips back to his mouth.

I knew full well that what was passing between us would have intense meaning and possible horrendous repercussions later on, but I still couldn't bring myself to pull away from him. His warm breath ruffled the fine hairs along my face making me smile against his smooth skin as I began to whisper my affections to him in low, steady tones. The part of me that was sensible and realistic, even cautious when it came to my friends and associations, was suddenly lost. Lost in his eyes and with the feeling of those kisses so warm and wet against my mouth. After what seemed to be so long, he smiled softly back at me and it was then that I knew we had finally come to terms after all the turmoil we'd been through and without either of us needing to utter a single word more.

He brought his hands up and stroked my face; tracing the contours of my cheekbones, nose, and mouth with an intense look. It was almost as if he was studying the lines of some complicated code, willing to break it by sure desire alone. Then he smoothed his hands down along my neck past my shoulders and finally rested them squarely on the small of my back. With the slightest bit of pressure he pushed me the last scant inch between us down into him and began very slowly rubbing his arousal against my own throbbing need.

Sparks flashed behind my eyes and I tried hard to concentrate on the feel of him trapped between layers of jeans and cloth and felt myself beginning to tremble as my breathing came in soft pants against his cheek. His clever hands found the edge of my shirt and I let him pull it off me before I finally gave in to the building heat between us and kissed him hard. He opened his mouth to me willingly as I thrust my tongue inside and teased at his. I slipped my hand between our bodies and worked the zipper to my jeans down enough to relieve some of the pressure there before pressing back into him and nudging his legs a little further apart beneath me. His eyes slipped closed again as I slid a hand past his waistband to trace the tip of his arousal with my finger. I felt him shutter and I was about to unzip and remove his pants all together when a heart stopping pound on the window above Heero's head sent me instantly reaching for the gun beneath the seat and scrambling off him.

Blood pounded in my ears as I stared into Heero's wide and alert eyes. He was frowning darkly and was wearing an expression that almost made me laugh if it wasn't so damned frightening. I raised a finger to my lips, bidding him stay silent as I desperately tried to gage the unexpected visitor through windows now covered in steam and fog. All I could do was make out the dark shape of a large man outside who seemed to be carrying a rifle of some kind. I was caught so off guard by the sudden unexpected intrusion that I found myself shivering with tension as I hovered over Heero's still form. I instantly knew it wasn't Trowa by the build and posture of the person, but was rattled badly all the same. How someone could have found us in the hiding spot I had put us in was beyond unbelievable to me. I had been so careful and between fear and panic was instantly reliving the past few hours dissecting all the things I could have or should have done differently instead of thinking about the person waiting outside. I was more than frazzled and found myself staring at the shape outside the window weighing crazy, fool-hearty, options when I felt Heero's palm slip from mine and rest against my cheek. I glanced back to him and after a few moments was able to catch and understand the silent communication he was giving about what our next move should be. We were really in no position to do anything other than for me to back off him completely and get out of the car. I quickly motioned my intentions and ignored his sudden hard glare. I knew he was thinking it'd be him venturing out and neutralizing the threat while I stayed safely hidden in the car... yeah, right. I wasn't about to let that happen. I slid the gun out of its place under the seat and eased my way silently out of the car on the opposite side of whomever it was that had found my clever little hiding space and without acknowledging Heero's last fleeting look.

I slipped the gun into the back of my jeans and quickly took the opportunity to zip myself back up as I made my way out of the car. The heat from inside the car vanished instantly as I eased myself out into the cool air. The beads of sweat on my chest and face chilled in the lazy breeze and made my shiver spasm into a full body shake. Trying to mask my discomfort, I plastered a disarming smile on my face and raised my hands high as I rose from my crouch against the open door and found myself staring down the barrel of an old shotgun. The old man holding it almost made me snicker. He looked so much like a fat, sundried, old Howard that I had to choke on the rising bubble of giggles the picture produced, regardless of how squarely the gun was pointed at my head.

"Hey there, pops. What's with the hostility?" I cocked my head and smiled even wider hoping that he wasn't as nervous as he looked. Last thing I needed was some old, spooked, farmer getting jumpy that I was gunna mug him and wind up shooting me in a field.

"Don't you 'pops' me, sonny-boy. What the hell are you doin' grab-assin' in my back half?" He barked back completely disregarding my innocent, lost kid routine.

I brought my hands up higher above my head so he could see I wasn't holding a weapon and tried for a more neutral expression. I glanced around and hadn't a clue what he was talking about a back half, but figured he must have stumbled on us by accident. There was no need to escalate the situation if I could avoid it. He glanced to the car where Heero was still lying in the back seat motionless and nodded towards him.

"You go on and tell your sweetheart to get up on outta that car."

He shifted his gaze from the steamed windows, to me, to the field behind us, and then finally back to me. A smile I just couldn't contain broke out over my face. "Uh... okay mister. We uh... didn't mean to trespass. Didn't really think there would be a soul around here."

"Well ya 'are. I seen you turn off the road up there and watched you ride up through my pasture. I got horses that come up this way and could take a spill in those them damn ruts you made with your car."

I knocked twice on the side of the car, giving Heero the all clear to come out on my side. He slid across the seat and with another pointed look at me, eased his way out of the car and stood stoically next to me.

"You city kids got no respect for a hard-workin' mans' fields I'd say... "

The guy was mid-rant when Heero appeared from out of the car and the guy just about froze on the spot. We were the picture of two lovers who had just been caught red-handed with our dishelved hair, swollen lips, and me sans my shirt. Heero still had his pants partially undone and looked coolly annoyed as he stood scowling beside me. I quickly used the distraction to take the gun out of the back of my jeans to slip it into Heero's hand as he came around beside me. Poor old guy. I felt bad for him that we had surprised him so obviously. Still, he was making me nervous how hard he was gripping the gun in his hand so I decided now was not the time to fall into a peel of laughter over our odd... and somewhat embarrassing situation.

"What kind-a... a thing... is goin' on about here, now?"

The old guy sputtered as he fought an obvious blush. He may be old, but he was far from stupid. Beside me, Heero tensed. The vulnerable and weary boy that had been pressed underneath me in the back seat of Trowa's car had disappeared the moment there was another person within two feet of us. The gun the old man held was still shakily pointed in the direction of my head, which was not making the tension any better. That fleeting glimpse of Heero's lonely soul I had just witnessed before getting out of the car was no where to be seen as he practically tried to kill the old guy where he stood with no more than the heat from his pointed glare. When I spared a quick look to see just how lethal Heero was feeling right then, I found myself staring into the icy blue eyes of someone whose anger was only just held in check. It was then that I realized giving him the gun wasn't the wisest move.

The slight movement I had made in turning my head to steal that glance made Heero tense even more. The last thing I wanted was for anyone to get hurt and the old guy was obviously no threat to us. I felt badly that we tore up his field and if I was really paying attention I suppose I would have noticed that the clearing was more than just random. I quickly began scrambling for something neutral to say to ease the old guy's fear that we were about to do something wicked or hostile. "My friend and I... "

"We got lost." Heero's voice interrupted in a low growl.

The old guy's trembling hands seemed to worsen with Heero's continued stern expression. The short cutting tone only seemed to make it even worse. I quickly jumped in again before someone got shot accidentally or otherwise. "Yeah, we did and I'm real sorry about the field. We were on our way to Belmont and were drivin' all night. We thought we'd just take a quick nap here in the shade before heading back out on the road and got ourselves turned all around. No harm meant... I swear." I did my very best impression of a Boy Scout as I raised my one hand higher in the air and tugged Heero closer to me by catching a finger through the belt loop on the back of his pants with my other hand and took the gun back from him.

"You're awfully hidden in these here trees to be takin' a quick nap." He looked at me plainly but dropped the gun to his side and to my relief.

I let go of Heero's beltloop and felt more than saw him ease up beside me. "Well ya see... " I started with a nervous bubble of laughter, but was quickly silenced by the guy with a wave of the hand and his gruff voice.

"I don't give a rat's ass why you're here or where you're getting yourselves off to. Just clear out and try to go back the way you came as not to make dem ruts any worse than ya already have. Don't really care to know the particulars."

He turned abruptly then and walked off through the trees and away from the road and it was only then that I noticed a thin, wire fence in the tree line behind us that must be the edge of the pasture he had mentioned. As soon as I was sure he was far enough out of earshot I turned to Heero who had moved away from me and was now leaning against the passenger side car door, and let out an explosive breath along with another burst of nervous laughter. Heero had his arms casually crossed over his chest and was wearing the most peculiar smirk on his face I'd ever seen before. His whole demeanor had changed so quickly that it caught me completely off guard and the only thing I could think of to say just then was: "Wha?"

"You." He said quietly and turned his gaze away from me to look up into the blue sky and smiled softly.

"Me what?"

I could feel my anger starting to prick at the odd and sudden change in his behavior. I had just gone from highly aroused to damn near a heart attack in the past few moments and now found myself staring at Heero again; who was looking as though he hadn't a damn care in the world. "Ya mind clueing me in here?"

"That old man was thinking the same thing as I was."

"What? I hope this old piece of shit gun doesn't go off accidentally and blow my damned head off?"

"No. That you look like sex." He growled out as he gazed at me lazily.

The sexual tension instantly appeared between us again even though his casual stance and his bored expression was trying to say the exact opposite. I found myself tucking stray whips of hair behind my ear as I ducked away from his hungry look and realized just how close we had come to that very thing before our little... interruption.

"So... " I glanced back towards the road and saw no signs of Farmer Ted. With a little swallow to wet my suddenly dry throat I took a few steps closer to him. "What do you wanna do now?"

Heero pushed off from the car as calmly as he'd been standing there waiting for a bus and stalked through the few feet of tall golden grass that was swaying in the breeze all around us and stopped a few inches in front of me. The odd little smirk he'd been wearing slowly morphed into a small, shy smile that made me swallow. Hard.

"This." He whispered softly.

He slid his arms around me and kissed me slowly and softly at first. Then as I leaned into his kiss he became bolder; hungrily deepening it and drawing me closer to him. His arms around me tightened as he grazed my bottom lip with his teeth just before he leaned back to look into my wide eyes. In the middle of that sunny field I thought I wouldn't be able to draw another breath as he looked at me. I wanted to say something, but just as I opened my mouth to speak, he hooked an ankle around my calf and tripped me hard to the ground in an untidy sprawl. I let out a yelp of protest as I hit the ground and almost had the wind knocked from me. I was about to sit up when I saw his smile broaden above me as he slowly dropped down on all fours. With a look that bordered lecherous, he crawled up on top of me pushing me back down on the ground with the weight of his body pressed against mine. He cupped my face in his hands and kissed me languidly before slowing moving down to my chest to suckle at my left nipple. I let my head fall back and stared up at the blue sky trying to gather any solid thought as the sensation of his mouth on my bare skin sent shivers through my whole body.

The tall, golden grass surrounded us and I could hear the chirping insects all around us like some kind of strange music. He eased his hands up into my hair and tangled his fingers in it. He kissed his way from my nipple back to my mouth, leaving a hot, wet trail of moisture with his tongue. The tension had been building between us for so long that I suddenly felt like it was now or never so I pushed up hard against him keeping my mouth on his as we fumbled with the remains of our clothing. I had let the gun slip carefully from my fingers to the ground beside us and thrust both hands into his hair taking a fistful in each one. The sun warmed us as the breeze cooled our heated skin and I found myself whispering his name over and over. When we finally lay naked against eachother; touching, fondling, and finally when we came together I felt hot tears start to creep down my face. I was almost angry with them, but as Heero finally took me I realized that they were mingled with ones of his own. We rocked and thrusted until we both came in an explosion of feeling and wonder and once fully sated; lay in the grass and fell asleep naked in the sun for an amount of time I can't quite recall. I woke comfortably wrapped around him; sticky, sore and exhausted, but happier than I'd been in my whole lifetime.

I was in the midst of a full body stretch when he finally came fully awake. I contemplated rolling back on top of him to kiss him senseless, when his eyes flew wide and he sprang to his knees next to me. I sat up with my elbows bracing me, not sure of his panic and glanced past him to where I could see the car through the tall grass that hid us. When my gaze returned to him I was met with a look that made my heart sink and my breath come short. He was staring at me with that same blank expression I had seen at the hospital as if he was looking right through me. There was nothing but cold, blue steel in his eyes as he frowned darkly down at me where I was still half laying, frozen in place in the tall grass. When I found the will to pull myself out of that cold glare to ask him what was wrong, his eyes became harder and it was then that I noticed he had the gun in his hand.

"Hee... "

"What did you do?" He growled at me and I found my heart begin to pound hard in my chest. I didn't want to move, afraid that it would provoke him to action.

"W-what do you mean, Heero?" I asked very quietly and calmly even though I thought I was just about come apart at the seems. The look in his eyes was tearing at me, taking all of my will not to tackle him and hold him to me until the wave of madness past.

"You're helping them. This is all... t-this... deception... you created this diversion to distract me... distracting me from what I need to do."

He glanced frantically around and stood; clutching the gun in a tight fist as his side. It scared me to see him standing naked in the low light of the evening, gripping the gun in his shaking hand as he frantically glanced all around him for the quickest way out of the field. I had left the safety on when I got out of the car and he didn't have a finger anywhere near the trigger, but knowing who I was dealing with was also enough to make me stay right where I was. I felt the tears prick in my eyes, angry of my fear of him. Angry enough that I finally began to creep into a position that I could spring on him if he only stood still long enough for me to reach him.

He looked as lost and afraid as he had when he first woke in the hospital and I wasn't quite sure I'd be able to talk him off the ledge, but knew that I had no choice given the circumstances. I didn't know what brought it on, but even in this state he amazed me with his strength and focus. The look of panic in his eyes that any minute bands of angry men were going to pop up out of the field and haul him away made me forget the spark of fear and to speak his name softly again.

"Heero love, you need to listen to me. Please... you know who I am... and I love you."
