Notes: This takes place a month after 'Learning The Art Of Love'. Now that Heero knows of his feelings for Duo, can he convince the violet-eyed God of Death to surrender to him for good?
'The Colony Ritz' turned out to be the most posh hotel the city had to offer. After going back to Duo's to pack his things and retrieve Heero's duffel bag, the two former Gundam pilots found themselves in the lobby of that hotel. Heero looked around briefly before marching up to the front desk.
"Can I help you, sir?" the brown-haired service desk person asked sweetly.
Heero gave her a small smile. "I'd like to reserve a Jacuzzi suite, please... one with the most amenities."
The girl smiled, her stormy blue eyes taking in the incredibly beautiful young man that the devastatingly handsome dark-haired guest had walked in with. It was like that, was it? "Well, sir, those accommodations only offer a king-sized bed." She leaned a little closer to Heero and said in a conspiring voice, "But I'm sure that won't be a problem, will it?"
Heero saw her gaze flicker to Duo who was waiting with their bags a few paces off; he couldn't help but blush a little, the girl's warm, mischievous smile making him feel like she knew exactly what he had planned for the other boy standing close by. He looked at her, his face turning even redder as he said softly, "If it is, you'll know it. I'll be back down here to get a different room rather quickly."
The girl giggled. "I have a feeling you won't have to worry about that, sir. He'd be crazy to not take advantage of the situation." Her blue eyes sparkled with appreciation. "If you take any video, please be sure to leave me a copy," she said cheekily as she handed Heero his electronic room key and winked. Before Heero could think of a proper reply, she added cheerfully, "Thank you for staying with us. I hope your visit is a very, very pleasurable one."
Heero nodded, unable to keep the small smile off his face in spite of his embarrassment. "I'm sure it will be." With that, he turned and motioned for Duo to follow him to their room.
"Wow! Look at this!" Duo exclaimed as he walked into their sleeping quarters for the week. Well, it was a hell of a lot more than just a place to sleep. A large Jacuzzi tub was nestled in one corner of the room, a wet bar along the wall, a big-screen television across from the huge king-sized bed... wait a minute...
"Um, Heero... there's, uh, only one bed in here."
Heero was busying himself with placing their clothes in the large dresser. "The Jacuzzi suites only come with a king," he replied evenly, trying not to look at Duo as he said it. "I figured it was worth sleeping in the same bed in order to have the tub."
Duo just stared at him. He was going to have to sleep with Heero? He reminded himself that he had shared a bed with the other boy countless times, but still... this was completely different. They weren't on a mission. There was no danger lurking around the corner. There was no reason to worry about... well... becoming involved. Duo didn't know how he was going to handle this. It wasn't that he lacked self-control; it was just that there were fewer reasons why he should exhibit it. Duo groaned to himself; this was certainly going to be a long week.
Heero watched the other boy out of the corner of his eye. He could see the emotions flash across Duo's face and felt a sense of satisfaction at the other boy's discomfort. If he were a betting man, he'd wager that Duo's resistance was slowly fading away. That was a very good thing, in the former Wing pilot's opinion. It would make it so much easier to get Duo to give into him. Heero smiled to himself; this was certainly going to be a fun week.
Duo sighed. "Well, do you want to grab some lunch out? I figured we'd order room service for dinner."
Heero shut the drawer and turned. "That sounds like a good idea. Where should we go?"
Duo thought for a moment. "There's a place just a couple of blocks over. They've got great cheeseburgers and fries."
Heero nodded. "Okay, sounds good. Why don't you shower first? It will give your hair time to dry while I'm taking one."
Duo smiled as he picked up his shampoo, conditioner, and a clean pair of boxers. "Deal. Man, I feel so grungy! It will be nice to wash this day away." He stopped abruptly and amended his statement with, "Well, wash away the first part of the day. This last part was much better since you were with me..."
He had just wanted to keep Heero from thinking he hadn't enjoyed his company, but it had somehow come out sounding rather... sappy. Duo blushed, not knowing how Heero would take it.
Heero just gave him a knowing look. "During the war, you could always lift my spirits by just smiling at me... even though I never let you know it."
Their eyes met and locked for a moment. Duo spoke in a hurried voice, like he was trying to say what he wanted before he could stop himself. "And you could always give me the strength to go on when I didn't think I could make it, just by saying my name."
Before Heero could say something in response to that, Duo disappeared into the bathroom, shutting the door securely. Heero looked after him for a few minutes longingly before he turned his attentions to choosing clean clothes for their first 'date'. He smiled. Duo didn't even know he was being 'taken out'.
They walked down the street towards 'Mo's'. Duo kept giving his companion sideways glances. He had always admired Heero's good looks, but dressed like this, the dark-haired boy was even more attractive than before. Heero was wearing a dark gray Henley shirt that he'd tucked into a pair of dark blue jeans that fit his body in all the right places, and a pair of black boot-shoes. Heero looked amazing, and all Duo could think about was the fact they would be sharing a bed later on. He tried to tell himself that they were just friends, and that they could never be lovers. As he gave Heero another longing look, he had to admit that they did look good together; Duo had unconsciously dressed to compliment the other boy's attire.
Heero had been feeling Duo's eyes on him all the way to the bar and grill. He knew he looked more than acceptable. Noin had taken time to help him shop for clothes before he'd left for L2. He had to admit though, Duo looked good in anything the braided boy wore, and the clothes he had on now were no exception. Light blue jeans that rode low on his hips, an open cream-colored button down shirt over a dark blue tee shirt that was tucked in, and a pair of biker boots graced the braided boy's slim form. A brown leather necklace around his neck and matching leather bracelet on his wrist completed his ensemble. Heero didn't know how he was going to keep his hands off of the other boy, but he was determined to take this as slowly as he was able. Looking at Duo, he was starting to wonder how fast that was going to end up being.
They arrived at Mo's, both of them glad to be given something else to focus on than each other. As they were seated, Heero took in the ambiance of the place. It wasn't so small that it couldn't accommodate large groups, yet it wasn't so large that it lost its intimate charm; Heero liked it immediately and decided that if all went well, this would become one of their favorite places to go.
"I recommend the half-pound with cheese and fries with the works," Duo said happily. He could tell that Heero liked the place, and it made him feel comfortable at the other boy's acceptance.
"Hmm. The half-pound looks good, but I want to try those onion rings. How about we get a basket of each and share?" Heero offered, looking up from the menu to see Duo smiling brightly.
"Sounds great! Um, but since when did you become such a fried food fan?"
Heero looked sheepishly at him. "Zechs and Noin got me addicted to onion rings. We used to go to this place almost an hour away just to get them. They had good chicken sandwiches too. Noin used to tease Zechs, saying he was going to lose his 'boyish figure' if he didn't quit eating two orders..." Heero trailed off as he noticed the look on Duo's face. There was a sense of longing there, and maybe jealousy?
"Sounds like you guys really had a good time," Duo commented lightly, trying to hide his hurt. It was stupid for him to feel left out. He could have visited Heero as much as Heero could have visited him, but Duo felt almost angry at Zechs and Noin for managing to do the one thing he couldn't - break through Heero's defenses. In fact, those defenses had been the cause of Duo putting up his own.
Neither boy had a chance to say anything else because the waitress arrived to take their orders. Once she left, an awkward silence fell, and Heero didn't know how to fill it. He could tell Duo was fidgeting out of nervousness, but the normally loquacious ex-pilot was being too quiet for once. Heero refused to let it continue. He had come to see Duo to make up for lost time; it was time to begin doing that.
"Duo, Zechs and Noin helped me to accept the fact that I didn't have to be afraid to show my feelings... hell, to even admit that I have feelings... but it was you who opened the door to let them in."
Duo looked at Heero, shocked at the confession. "What do you mean?"
"Every time you tried to get close to me, I pushed you away, but it wasn't because I didn't want you to succeed. It was the exact opposite." Heero paused trying to make sure he said this right for a change. "I wanted to be friends with you so badly, but I was afraid, Duo. I was afraid you'd just hurt me, that after you got to know me, you wouldn't really want to be friends anymore. I thought that you enjoyed the challenge of trying to get me to give into you more than you actually cared about me."
"Heero, that's not true!" Duo said angrily. "The only reason why I kept trying was because you meant so much to me. Damn it, Heero, do you think I put up with your shit just for fun?"
Heero shook his head. "I don't now, but back then I didn't understand. I'd always thought that true friendship was something I would never have, because I was a soldier, and I didn't know if I would even survive the war. You forced me see that a soldier could still care about people, and you still wanted to be my friend in spite of how I acted. You proved me wrong, Duo, but that didn't mean I was going to admit it. At least not until I was finally confronted with it."
"And how were you confronted with it?" Duo asked, his anger abating slightly at the explanation. The waitress chose that moment to bring their drinks, giving Duo a few moments to consider Heero's words. He'd never known that Heero had been so... fragile on the inside. He'd always thought that the Wing pilot had emotions, but to see that the other boy had struggled so much with simple friendship made Duo realized that Heero hadn't meant to be so cold to him. He had just been protecting himself, and now that Heero didn't feel the need to hide, he was able to be more open. Duo didn't know whether he liked that or not. It was easier to remain just friends when friendship was barely attainable, but when more could be offered, where did that leave them? 'Sharing a bed in hotel room,' Duo thought to himself uneasily.
Heero had debated exactly what he was going to tell Duo about his relationship with Zechs and Noin. Although they had only had those two encounters sexually, the cupid couple had become Heero's best friends over the course of the next month, giving Heero a sense of balance and stability in his life until he was ready to see Duo. Heero decided the best thing to do was to just explain to Duo what had happened. If Duo didn't accept it then there would be no need to go on anyway. There would be no secrets between them. Heero had promised that to himself before he'd ever left for L2.
"Noin saw how unhappy I was," he began, trying to keep his voice calm. "She invited me over for dinner with her and Zechs. I didn't want to go, but I did. I was so nervous, afraid that I was going to do something to ruin the tentative relationship between us. We were sitting in the living room after dinner, talking about you and the other pilots. Next thing I knew, I was being seduced."
Duo choked on his drink. "What?" He sputtered, trying to keep from inhaling more carbonated soda.
"Hazelnut coffee will never have the same meaning," Heero mumbled, noticing Duo's confused expression. When Duo just stared at him, Heero sighed. "They wanted to show me how two people interact when they love each other. They wanted me to learn the art of love, Duo, to give into the emotions I kept burying inside," Heero hesitated, "so I watched."
"You watched them have sex?" Duo asked incredulously. His mind was reeling. This was SO not anything he would have ever thought Heero would do.
"Yes. And then I had sex with them. Well, I mean, Noin had oral sex with me while Zechs had intercourse with her, but it was at the same time, so..." Duo's eyes were wider than Heero had ever seen them and his mouth was open wider than that. The other boy couldn't seem to speak, so Heero continued. "It was incredible, and I don't mean just the sex. I had never let myself just feel anything, and what they did for me made me realize that I had been shutting out everyone who cared about me... especially you."
Duo closed his eyes, took a breath, and then spoke in a voice that belied his calm. "You mean to tell me that having a threesome made you accept my friendship?" He tried not to let the edge of anger show. All this time he had wanted Heero, and Zechs and Noin had simply taken what he had barely hoped to receive someday. Even though he'd told himself over and over again that he didn't have a chance with Heero, there had always been that one part of him that wouldn't let go; he felt that part crying.
Heero could see the pain and anger in the other boy's violet eyes when Duo opened them again, but he suddenly felt like he shouldn't have to defend what had happened. "No. Having two people who weren't afraid to admit their attraction to me made me feel wanted and helped me to not be afraid of intimacy," he replied coolly, trying to keep himself calm. "They cared enough about me to overcome their fear of rejection. My feelings were more important than their own."
Duo flinched. That had hit way too close to home for him. He could see the barely controlled anger in Heero's blue eyes and wondered just how much the other boy knew about his feelings for him. "They had each other if you'd said no. Other people don't have that luxury. It's not that easy when your heart is on the line, and there's no turning back once you say the words." Duo looked away quickly.
Their food arrived then and their conversation ended. Heero was disappointed. He'd wanted Duo to understand, but it appeared that the other boy just couldn't see past the fact that he had been sexually intimate with Zechs and Noin. Heero wanted to laugh. As if Duo hadn't been with other people. What gave him the right to sleep with someone else and expect Heero to just wait until he was willing to tell him that he wanted him? The longer Heero sat there, the angrier he got about it.
Duo watched the other boy, trying to grasp what Heero had told him. He could tell that Heero was retreating further and further behind those walls the longer they sat there in silence. Maybe it was time Duo quit trying to hide. Maybe it was time to be honest, at least about why he was angry.
"Heero, I guess I just don't understand why it took that to get through to you. If I'd known that, I would have offered to sleep with you a long time ago. I never would have thought..."
"You probably wouldn't understand why Zechs had me fuck him either, but it happened, and it was something we both needed," Heero grated out, his voice cold, yet eyes blazing with controlled fury. "It happened only once, with both of them. The rest of the time I was there, they just helped me learn what it meant to be friends. Going out to eat, going to the movies, sitting around and talking, having dinner. The same damn thing we're doing now, only I knew they were doing it because they really cared about me. Why the hell are you here, Duo?"
"The same reason I ALWAYS was with you, you bastard!" Duo shouted as he stood, throwing his napkin down on the table before walking away.
The waitress approached the table, taking in the scene, and Heero quickly handed her more than enough money to cover the bill before he left to go after the other boy.
Duo was halfway down the block when Heero caught up with him. He grabbed hold of Duo's arm and spun him around to face him. "Why?"
Duo fumed. He was hurt, he was angry, and he was... in love with Heero Yuy. All this time, he had tried to convince himself that it was just infatuation, or at least just sexual attraction, but he couldn't deny the feelings he was having... and it hurt. It really hurt. He just stood there, looking at Heero silently.
Heero let go of Duo's arm, but instead of turning away, he moved closer, placing his hands on the braided boy's shoulders. "They knew I would want to see you when they did what they did, Duo. They never expected me to stay with them. They knew I would leave, and yet they put aside their feelings and tried to help me sort out mine. Don't you understand what that cost them? Can't you see they did this for you too?"
Duo shook his head. "I don't... I mean... how can I..." he closed his eyes and took a deep breath. "You just showed up here, tell me you want to be friends, then inform me that you've slept with Zechs and Noin."
"Why does it matter anyway, Duo, if we're just friends?" Heero countered, knowing he was treading on dangerous ground, but needing Duo to admit the real reason why he was upset.
Duo looked away. "Do you know how hard it is for me to express how I really feel? Heero, you're not the only person who hides to keep from getting hurt. You can't expect me to just open up to you when you've pushed me away for so long."
Heero reached up and brushed a piece of loose hair away from Duo's face. "I know. That's why I came here, Duo. I wanted to give you a chance to see that I'm not going to push you away anymore. I wanted you to understand that my feelings for you are important to me. I want to explore what we could be."
Duo snorted. "So that's what the Jacuzzi is for, huh? Planning on getting me into the tub and seducing me? Or how about that king-sized bed? Let's just skip the friendship bit when we can just fuck. That should make everything all better, right?"
Heero pulled away. The bitter tone in Duo's voice made him shiver as he realized that was exactly what he had thought. He hadn't realized how fragile Duo's emotions were, thinking that once he showed the braided boy that he wanted him sexually, that everything would fall into place. Only problem was that Duo didn't seem to see his advances as anything but physical. That wasn't what Heero wanted. Sex and love were not interchangeable. Seduction without the softer emotions was like a canvas without color - barren, worthless, and plain ugly.
"No," Heero replied, stepping back slightly so he could look into Duo's eyes. "I won't touch you like that unless you want me to, and only when it's because you care about me the way I care about you. There is nothing more I'd rather do than make love to you, Duo, but I will not just fuck you for the sake of having sex." Before Duo could say anything, Heero turned and began walking towards the hotel.
Duo followed silently. As they walked along, his mind was busy trying to process the fact that Heero had just told him he wanted to 'make love' to him. Duo was still angry with Zechs and Noin, but as they entered the hotel, he began to see that what was important was how Heero had felt about it. Even though they had all been intimate, Heero had seen it as a learning experience, not as a romantic encounter that was to be a prelude to a long-term relationship; Heero apparently saw any sexual experience with Duo as just that instead. Another well-constructed piece of pride fell away from his heart, revealing that part of him that had cried out earlier, that part he had tried to shield further with his anger. By the time they reached their room, Duo was regretting his reaction, wishing he had listened to Heero instead of just getting upset. He only hoped that he would get the chance to make it up to Heero before it was too late.
Heero went straight to the bathroom as soon as they got to their room. Closing the door behind him, he let his calm exterior fall away to reveal the anguish he was feeling. He wanted to cry. He knew he couldn't. Looking at himself in the mirror, he felt the overwhelming urge to pack and go back the Mars Project. Zechs and Noin would understand; he was certain of it. Even as he thought it, though, his heart told him he would never be satisfied. Even if they welcomed him back into their bed, neither one of them would ever be Duo. Besides, as much as Heero cared for them both, he wasn't in love with them.
Heero turned on the faucet, splashing cold water on his face. He didn't know what he was going to face when he walked back out into the other room, but he knew he had to deal with it whether he wanted to or not. Taking a deep breath, he dried off and opened the door. The sight that met him was unexpected.
"Hey, I thought maybe we should just try this again," Duo explained hesitantly as he stood by the Jacuzzi. He'd already begun filling it, and the smell of strawberry bubble bath permeated the air.
"Try what?" Heero asked, not understanding what the other boy meant.
Duo stepped closer. "I'm sorry, Heero. I know I haven't been much of the friend you thought I was since you've been here, but I really want you to know that I care about you... a lot. Why don't we just forget about what happened earlier and have a soak in the tub before dinner. It will relax us, and maybe we can talk some more; only I'll really listen this time and try to understand."
Heero smiled slightly. Duo would never cease to amaze him. He could go from being angry to comforting in 0.9 seconds. Heero nodded, his heart feeling lighter than just moments before as he began stripping off his clothes. He watched Duo remove his own, taking in the beautiful sight of the other boy's body. Duo was lean, but working at the yard had strengthened his muscles, given him nice tone in his arms and legs. His skin was nicely tanned from his time outdoors, and Heero couldn't help but wonder what that vast expanse of smooth flesh tasted like. He forced away those thoughts as Duo submerged himself in the foamy water, willing his awakening erection away before Duo beckoned him to join him.
Duo knew Heero was watching him. He took great care to take off his clothes carefully, not blatantly sensual, but with enough practiced grace that he knew it was arousing. He was thrilled that Heero was allowing him a chance to make things right. He slid into the warm sudsy water and watched Heero as the boy just stood there. Heero's body had always aroused Duo, but it was more than that; Duo thought Heero was simply beautiful in his masculinity. Well-defined muscles, golden skin, that ever-wild brown hair; Heero was more than Duo could have ever dared to ask for. He felt his arousal twitch as the jets of hot water caressed it. As he reached to invite Heero into the tub with him, Duo wondered why he suddenly felt like taking that dare.
The wet bar across the room caught Heero's attention before he accepted the invitation. With a small smile at Duo, he walked over to it, perusing its contents. He then selected a bottle and two glasses before walking over to the tub.
"If you're trying to get me drunk, Yuy, I don't think that stuff is going to work," Duo chuckled, as he looked at the bottle of ginger ale the other boy was pouring.
"It's not hazelnut coffee, but it will have to do," Heero replied with a smirk as he handed Duo a glass. Taking his own, Heero climbed into the tub, settling at the opposite end, his feet down by Duo's chest.
"What exactly is the deal with the coffee?" Duo asked, sipping his carbonated beverage contentedly.
Heero smiled at the memory. "Noin served hazelnut coffee after dinner the night she and Zechs offered to show me..." he paused, waiting to see Duo's reaction. When Duo nodded for him to go on, Heero continued, "Anyway, it just struck me funny. After we had sex, I made the remark that it was a long way from hazelnut coffee, and it just became our little joke about how sometimes our expectations go far and beyond anything we could have ever imagined. I was just glad that I'd made it through dinner without making a fool out of myself. I had no idea that dessert was going to consist of a threesome."
Duo thought about that for a moment. Life was like that sometimes. He'd never expected to be sitting in a Jacuzzi with Heero talking about his sex life, yet there they were. It made Duo realize that a person needed to not be afraid to take risks sometimes if it meant getting what your heart desired most. He had lived his life that way once, not caring what anyone else thought so long as he was happy; it was time he did so again. Duo promised his heart that he wouldn't let his pride continue to dictate his actions anymore.
"So... what exactly did Zechs and Noin do for you to watch?" Duo queried hesitantly. He was curious.
Heero couldn't help but flush slightly. "They stripped for me. Then Noin lay on the bed and Zechs kissed her neck, shoulders, and back, all the way down to..." Heero felt himself harden with the memory.
Duo was getting aroused by just thinking about it. "He rimmed her?" He asked breathlessly.
Heero nodded. "It was the sexiest thing I'd ever seen. Then he turned her over and fingered her while he licked her. I... I couldn't help but touch myself..." Heero trailed off, wondering what Duo would think of that. It had been quite voyeuristic of him, but Heero had needed some kind of release.
"I don't know of anyone who wouldn't have masturbated watching that," Duo said evenly. "Hell, I probably would have been on the bed with them before then."
Heero laughed. "After Noin and I climaxed, they had me join them. That's when Noin went down on me while Zechs took her. It was incredible, Duo, to be able to let myself enjoy something like that. Noin fingered me while she sucked me off. I'd never known that pleasure could be so good." Heero took a sip of ginger ale and smiled softly.
Duo waited for the hurt to surface again at the other boy's words, but instead, an understanding had taken its place. "Did Zechs ask you to take him after that?"
Heero shook his head. "No. It wasn't until the next morning that he approached me. I mean, Duo, it wasn't as much about sex as it was a reckoning with the battles we had fought with each other and ourselves for so long. Taking him gave me a sense of control over my sexual and emotional sides that I had denied myself. I think Zechs was able to finally surrender that part of himself he had always been afraid to let anyone have. It made us both stronger in a way I can't explain, but it was never about love... with either of them."
"It was more of a psychological need that had to be fulfilled before you could move on, right?" Duo saw Heero's face light up and knew he had finally grasped the meaning it had for Heero. He grinned at the dark-haired boy as Heero smiled back.
"Yes. That's exactly why. I'm..." Heero swallowed, his relief so great it was overwhelming. "I'm glad you can see it for what it was, Duo... very glad. I was afraid that you would... think less of me." He watched Duo, as his words seemed to make Duo realize how important his acceptance was to Heero.
Duo knew that something was changing between them. For once, he wasn't afraid of it. "I'd be lying if I said that there weren't times that I have used sex for different reasons than just physical ones, Heero," Duo admitted. "Even if it doesn't solve everything, sometimes it does help at the time. You won't find any condemnation coming from me, buddy. I have no room to talk, and I'm sorry if I made you feel bad about something that was so important to you."
"Thank you. That means a lot." Heero paused then added thoughtfully. "They knew I needed the emotional stability of friendship, and they continued to give that to me after it happened, so I would know it wasn't just about sex."
Duo swallowed the last of his drink and handed the glass to Heero to set aside. "So for you, sex is just a beginning, not the culmination of a relationship?"
Heero considered Duo's words then nodded. "Yes. I guess you could say that, especially if friendship is already there to begin with. I think friendship makes it mean more. And love..." Heero looked at Duo, blue locking with violet. "Love would probably make it unbelievable."
Duo felt his pulse quicken. The way Heero was looking at him made him harden even more, and the urge to tempt fate, to take that dare he'd always refused to before, overwhelmed him. Carefully, he moved his foot to slide against Heero's side, causing the other boy to gasp in surprise.
"Well, we certainly have friendship on our side. And I would sure hate to waste the Jacuzzi and the king-sized bed." Duo moved his foot to rub Heero's stomach. "Besides, it wouldn't be fair to deprive you the joy of seducing me since you have your heart set on it, now would it?" His violet eyes glinted in the low light as a sultry smile graced his lips.
Heero saw the longing in those violet depths. He hadn't intended on doing anything yet, especially after what had happened at lunch, but the look of desire on Duo's face made him want to touch the other boy so much that he couldn't resist. Heero reached out and ran his hand along Duo's calf under the bubbles, pleased by Duo's quick intake of breath.
"Seduction is an art form, you know," Heero said huskily. "I'd really like to show you how I express my artistic talents in it." Heero never took his eyes away from Duo's as his hand slid up the other boy's leg suggestively.
"Then by all mean," Duo almost purred, "make me your canvas."
