Heero walked into the kitchen, sniffing the air curiously. Duo stood at the stove, and from the smell of things, was making grilled cheese sandwiches. The former Wing pilot sighed to himself; he didn't seem to have the proper skills for making the seemingly simple creations that Duo excelled at. Even though Heero always put two slices of cheese on a sandwich and only used a certain kind of bread, just like Duo did, they never were the same. Duo's culinary delights always came out crispy on the outside, gooey on the inside, and Heero had become addicted to them. Giving the frying pan a passing glance, he made his way over to the fridge, retrieving the jar of pickles and a couple of sodas before sitting down at the table.
"Hey," Duo greeted, flipping a toasted side over languidly, the smile on his face betraying his notice of the Japanese boy's interest in the contents of his skillet.
"I hope one of those is for me," Heero said as he watched Duo use the spatula to press down on the bread.
Duo looked over his shoulder at him and raised an eyebrow. "And just when have I ever failed to make you a grilled cheese when I'm having one?"
Heero snorted. "Never... but there's always a first time."
Duo shook his head but let that comment slide, busying himself with arranging the cheese 'just so' on the bread of the next sandwich in line to be grilled. "Don't forget, we've got that dinner thing at six."
Heero sighed out loud. "Remind me again how I let you talk me into that?" he asked, frowning slightly since he'd really wanted to stay in for the evening. There was a 'Trading Spaces' marathon on tonight.
"Actually, it was Quatre who talked you into it this time, remember?" Duo replied as he placed another sandwich into the sizzling butter. The first one was already finished and out on a plate.
Heero mumbled something about aggravating blondes as his eyes wandered unbidden over his roommate. He found himself taking in the changes that had occurred to the other boy over the past two years that they had shared an apartment together. Duo was slightly taller, a tad more so than Heero now, and had filled out more in his chest and shoulders. He was still lean, but the muscle of adulthood had made him more solid, giving his hips and legs more definition. His thick chestnut hair was the same, brushing thighs tantalizingly when unbraided. Heero felt himself blush a little as he suddenly realized that his eyes were lingering just a bit north of that -- on Duo's firm backside -- but he quickly attributed that to the other boy only wearing the cotton shorts he usually slept in. Of course, the careless ponytail swaying temptingly from side to side as Duo moved wasn't helping, either. Heero was slightly surprised by his own thoughts, but he'd always thought Duo was good looking, so he didn't really feel odd about admiring the other boy. In fact, his own reactions suddenly made him wonder why the American wasn't involved with someone.
Heero mentally began listing a few of Duo's bad points, trying to determine if they could play a part in keeping others from wanting to be in a relationship with Duo. The first thing that came to mind was that the other boy had a bad temper at times. When Heero thought about that for a minute, he admitted that it only happened when the former God of Death was provoked, and usually only then on behalf of someone else. That sense of 'protecting others' was actually something that made Heero respect Duo, so Heero didn't think someone else would see it as something detracting. Most of Duo's character flaws were that way, only seeming to endear him to others rather than exasperate them. The only other thing that Heero could think might be a problem was that Duo did require a lot of attention most of the time. He wasn't someone who spent a lot of time alone in silent introspection, nor did he like to do things by himself often. Even so, Heero knew that it was just because Duo was so outgoing, and if someone liked being around him, it wasn't an issue. Duo really wasn't annoying; he was just full of life. Heero actually found Duo's energy quite refreshing in a world of boring people.
As far as living with him, Duo's hair did sometimes cause problems, clogging drains and just showing up in the most unlikely places -- Heero had found strands of chestnut wrapped around his electric toothbrush more than once -- but as he looked at the ponytail swishing back and forth, he knew anyone would agree that seeing the boy with his hair down made up for those little inconveniences. Heero smiled slightly at that acknowledgment. Of course, there was one thing that did bother Heero immensely; Duo didn't hang up his wet towels after showering. He left them lying on the foot of his bed, and Heero usually had to pick them up in order to keep from having to listen to Duo complain when he encountered wet spots at night. He used to just tell Duo to shut up about it since it was his own fault, but after the other boy had slept on the couch a couple of nights, Heero had decided to just pick the damn things up every morning before leaving for work. It wasn't worth losing his roommate's company just to prove a point. Heero snorted to himself; even though Duo could be aggravating, his friendship was worth it.
All in all, Heero had to conclude that Duo made a wonderful companion, even as just a friend. As a lover... well, Heero could only imagine that the braided boy would be even better. He could tell that Duo would be a caring mate, someone who would do whatever he could to help make his loved one happy. He knew that Duo was a very emotional person and would be the kind of lover that would be extremely affectionate, since he was already very demonstrative with those who were just his friends. Heero also thought that Duo would be adventurous, willing to try new things, which would only make him more desirable to someone he slept with. As a person in general, he was unique, and the addition of a physical relationship to his other qualities would make him even more appealing. Heero let his eyes roam over Duo again and thought about some of his good points. Duo's body was alluring, his eyes were expressive, his smile was charming, his laughter was contagious, his sense of humor was uplifting, his intellect was engaging, and his personality was interesting. In short, Duo was very attractive. He could probably have anyone he wanted. Why wasn't he even trying to find someone? Heero was puzzled.
"Duo, why don't you date?"
The longhaired boy froze for a moment. He didn't turn around, didn't even glance over his shoulder, but resumed his cooking while responding with a hesitant, "Huh?"
Anyone else might not have noticed the lapse, but Heero wasn't just anyone. He could tell by the way Duo's back muscles had tensed that the other boy wasn't as nonchalant as he was trying to appear to be, but Heero didn't understand why the question would evoke such a reaction. "In the past two years, I've never seen you go out on a date. Why is that?"
Duo sighed heavily, still not turning to face Heero as he removed the other sandwich out of the pan onto another plate sitting on the counter. If Heero hadn't known better, he'd sworn that Duo was trying to keep from answering. That was so unlike Duo, and Heero was even more intrigued. Why would Duo be so thrown off by such a general question? It wasn't as if it was all that odd. Most people dated.
"Why would I need to?" Duo answered tentatively, as he set the skillet aside and turned off the burner. "I mean, you and I go out all the time. If there's a dinner or social function either one of us has to attend, the other normally does too, so we always go together. On the weekends, it's relaxing to just enjoy each other's company at home. I like spending time with you, Heero. Why should I bother with someone else? You're my best friend." He paused for a moment before continuing. "I just don't find other people all that interesting when compared to you. You're comfortable around me, and I feel like I can be myself around you. We understand each other. It just makes sense for us to do things together. Why complicate it?"
Heero watched as Duo then reached into the cabinet above the stove to grab the potato chips. When the other boy turned around, he didn't even make eye contact with Heero as he made his way over to the table. Duo sat Heero's plate in front of him before seating himself, his violet eyes glancing up briefly, only to return to his food as he began eating. If Heero didn't know any better, he'd think his best friend was embarrassed. If looked close enough, he thought he could see a slight blush on Duo's cheeks, even from across the table. This was certainly an unexpected reaction. He thought about what Duo had said for a moment, analyzing the exact words the other boy had used. Suddenly, the proverbial light bulb clicked on, and Heero was a little shocked to see what had been hiding in the dark. He hadn't known Duo's preferences, had never even entertained the possibility of Duo liking other guys, especially not him.
"So basically, we've been dating all this time, and I just didn't know it?" Heero asked, his voice sounding odd even to himself. He was surprised by the sudden revelation, and almost missed how quickly Duo jerked his head up to look at him, the telling blush creeping down the longhaired boy's neck.
"I... I wouldn't... I mean... I didn't..."
Heero raised an eyebrow. "Mean it like that? Well, from what you just said, it does sort of sound like that, doesn't it? The only thing is, if we're dating, I think we're both definitely being cheated. We seem to be missing an important element in that type of a relationship -- we haven't slept together once."
Duo just looked at him, shock written all over his face. "Heero..."
Heero studied his best friend across the table. "Nani?" When Duo only continued to stare at him, Heero sighed. "It's true, isn't it? Don't most couples have sex? I seriously doubt there are many dating partners who have been celibate for almost two years."
"Well, we're not exactly what would be considered... I mean, even if we were..." Duo just shook his head in frustration, abandoning his attempt to explain his thoughts.
Heero took in the dejected look on the other boy's face. "Listen, it's just not something I've ever thought about in that way before. I'm not angry about it."
Duo lowered his eyes. "But it's something you're definitely not interested in, right?"
Heero furrowed his brows, trying to understand Duo's response. "Why? Are you?"
Duo continued to look at his plate. "I... sometimes I feel like... it's just that..." He took a deep breath then, running his fingers through his bangs in exasperation before locking eyes with Heero's. "Sometimes I am attracted to you, okay?" When Heero didn't comment, Duo sighed, resigning himself to getting it all out in the open. "I mean, if I thought you'd ever consider an intimate relationship with me, I probably would have already said something about it, but I know you would never... well... feel that way..." He looked down again, "So I guess I just settled for the next best thing -- being close to you, as a friend."
"Why didn't you think I would consider an intimate relationship with you?" Heero asked softly. He was flattered that Duo would find him attractive, but curious as to why Duo had come to such conclusions about him without even discussing it. Of course, Heero could understand Duo's reluctance.
Duo looked back up at him. "Well, you've never been with another guy, have you?"
Heero shook his head. "No, but I haven't been with a girl, either. Just wasn't ever interested."
Duo blinked, surprised at that answer. "But you've never been aroused around another guy before, right?"
Heero considered that for a moment. "No, but I've never really thought about anyone like that."
"Well, I would think you'd know if you were physically attracted to guys," Duo argued, seeming to be determined to prove his conclusions. "I've been masturbating over guys as much as girls since puberty."
Heero remembered how he had catalogued the other boy's attributes just moments ago. Could he be sexually attracted to Duo? He looked into turbulent violet, his mind supplying him with an image of chestnut hair flowing over his naked body as he held Duo against him, moving in a slow rhythm, crying out in pleasure as he thrust into that lithe body... he felt himself harden, giving him his answer.
"Actually, I find you very attractive physically," he replied evenly, trying to ignore his flaming face.
Duo's eyes widened. "What?"
Heero shrugged. "I don't know why I never thought about it before, but you are..." he paused for a moment, considering what word to use, but only found one that truly expressed what he was feeling, "kiryoumake -- too beautiful for your own good."
Duo just sat there with his mouth open, sandwich forgotten. "Beautiful?" he whispered. "Honto ni?"
The Japanese boy gave him an intense look. "Hai, really. I wouldn't be against seeing if something could happen between us." He watched as disbelief filled the other boy's eyes. How long had Duo felt this way? Had the longhaired boy convinced himself that their present situation was enough without the sexual contact? Many conversations and reactions suddenly made sense to Heero, and he felt a stab of regret go through him. He thought about all of their nights out together... and suddenly had an idea.
"Duo, since we're already going out this evening, why don't we treat tonight as a real date?"
Duo blinked at him again. "Are you serious?"
"Aa. If you really want to see where this could go, I'm willing to find out," Heero explained. "In case you haven't noticed, I don't date either. Maybe there's a reason for that. Maybe I've been dating you subconsciously all along."
Duo smiled, amused at the idea. "Well, that would make sense in a twisted sort of way, I guess."
"So?" Heero prompted, feeling a little nervous for some reason as he waited for a response.
Duo seemed to consider Heero's offer for a moment before replying, "If you really want to, then I guess it would be all right. Just don't... well, you know, get weird about it. I want us to keep being friends too... just with... benefits." His face colored again slightly.
"You mean you don't want me to smother you with flowers, shower you with boxes of chocolates, and serenade you with love songs?" Heero teased, smiling slightly at the thought of him doing any of that.
Duo mock glared. "Try it and face the wrath of Shinigami, Yuy." Violet eyes then turned mischievous. "Although, I wouldn't really mind the chocolates. The way to a man's heart *is* through his stomach."
Heero smirked back at him, looking down at the grilled cheese in his plate pointedly, and Duo just grinned as they began eating again. When they were finished, Duo left Heero to deal with the dishes while he went to shower. Heero stood there, rinsing the dishes in the sink while contemplating what had just happened. He and Duo were going out on a date. He was going to date his best friend -- his 'beautiful' best friend. He tried to recall all of the dating practices he'd learned in their brief stints at the various schools during the first war, but everything that came to mind applied to dating a girl, and Duo definitely wasn't a girl. Heero finally decided that he would just give Duo a little more 'physical' attention and see how the other boy responded to it before trying anything else. As he loaded the dishwasher, he wondered if their friends would notice the difference. Snickering to himself at the image of Quatre's mouth hanging open in shock and Trowa's eyebrows raised in surprise, he set the wash cycle and headed to his room to pick out his attire for the evening. He wanted to make sure he looked 'attractive' for his 'date'.
They spent the rest of the afternoon involved in different activities, Duo online with an anime chat group, and Heero reading a book about the cactus he had become obsessed with growing. They were both in the same room, each wanting to reassure the other that everything was all right, and that the shift in their relationship wasn't going to interfere with their friendship. Duo laughed out loud at times, relaying different parts of the conversation that he thought Heero would find interesting or humorous, and Heero commented, acknowledging that he had been listening, before turning back to his book.
It was some hours later that Heero found himself standing in the doorway of the bathroom, watching Duo re-braid his hair. He couldn't seem to take his eyes off of the rhythmic motions of Duo's hands as the other boy wove long strands into their usual orderly state. He hadn't ever noticed how... sensual... Duo's fingers were; the way they gripped, strong yet gentle, made Heero's heart beat a little faster now that he was aware of it. By the time Duo was done, Heero had decided he definitely wouldn't mind those hands touching him. Anywhere. Everywhere.
"You know, most guys wait for their dates to finish getting ready before they see them," Duo commented lightly as he tied off the end of his long plait with a black fastener.
Heero snorted. "We live together, Duo. I've seen you get ready hundreds of times."
Duo frowned. "Yeah, but this is a little different, ne?"
Heero sighed, deciding to indulge the other boy. "Ryoukai. I'll be in the living room."
Duo couldn't tell if Heero was upset or not, so he turned to look at him, ready to tell him that he could stay. When his violet eyes saw acceptance and not anger on his friend's face, he just smiled, deciding to let Heero go on into the other room. "I'll be out soon. Arigato."
Heero nodded and went to sit down on the couch. He didn't understand Duo sometimes, but it was those little idiosyncrasies that made the other boy so... Duo. Living together for two years had given him the chance to get to know the other boy pretty well, learning things about Duo that he'd never known before. For instance, Duo spoke and wrote Japanese fluently. Heero had spent several months trying to keep his native tongue from slipping into conversations unexpectedly, not even realizing how often Duo had spoken it during the wars. When Duo began using Japanese phrases in his everyday banter, Heero had realized that he'd underestimated the other boy. Soon, they had both settled into speaking both Japanese and English. It was almost second nature now to use both in the same sentence, finding freedom in being able to express themselves with just the right words regardless of the language. It was something Heero was grateful for, even if he'd never told Duo. Heero suddenly realized that there were quite a few things he'd never told Duo 'thank you' for. He would try to remember to do so in the future.
It only took Duo a few more minutes to finish getting ready. As he walked into the living room, dressed for their night out, Heero realized that Duo had been right -- it was somehow different this time. He hadn't seen the outfit Duo had chosen to wear, and he let his eyes take in the figure standing before him. Tailored black dress pants fit Duo perfectly, accentuating his hips seductively; Heero was sure the rear view was just as good, and that thought brought a slight flush to the Japanese boy's face. A soft violet cotton shirt was tucked in, with sleeves folded up to the elbow to show off a black leather strap on Duo's left wrist and a silver watch on his right. The buttons were undone at the throat to reveal a black leather choker, something Heero found extremely sexy. The clean masculine scent of Duo's cologne drifted across the room, making Heero's body react in a definitely favorable way. The former Wing pilot was truly speechless; he'd never seen Duo more devastatingly handsome. No, not just handsome, but beautiful. It was masculine beauty, but beauty nonetheless, and Heero was intoxicated by it.
"Well, how do I look?" Duo asked, and Heero could hear the nervousness in the other boy's voice, despite Duo's self-assured stance.
"Breathtaking," was all Heero could manage, but it seemed to be enough to ease Duo's fears, because the other boy relaxed immediately, his eyes filling with unabashed joy. Heero was astonished that his words could mean that much to Duo. He made a mental note to give his friend compliments more often.
Duo grinned at him happily, and as Heero stood up to go, Duo motioned for him to turn for him. "My turn," the violet-eyed boy announced, and Heero felt his face redden even more as he gave Duo a rear view of his attire, Duo making appraising noises as he took in the Japanese boy's appearance.
Heero had chosen a pair of dark gray slacks that were comfortable but a tighter fit than usual, since he'd wanted to dress to entice. He had on a black button-down shirt with a matching gray/black/cream chiseled patterned tie that Quatre had bought him last Christmas. He'd tried to do something with his hair, but the unruly locks had fallen in their normal messy style. He'd been told that it made him look sexy and wild; he thought it made him look like a tousled little boy. Heero finally turned back around for Duo's verdict.
Duo nodded in appreciation. "You look good, Heero." His eyes locked with Heero's embarrassed blue ones. "Really good. All the girls are gonna be jealous when they find out you're with me." He winked.
Heero snorted derisively, but couldn't keep the pleased look off of his face. Together, they made their way out of the apartment for the evening, Duo making comments about looking forward to dinner, and Heero tugging playfully on the long braid swinging in front of him as they walked.
Duo looked at Heero from underneath his bangs. They were sitting in the back of the cab on their way to the convention center, and he was trying to get his head around what was happening. He was still amazed by Heero's acceptance of his feelings and subsequent acquiescence to see if there could be more to their relationship. Duo had been attracted to the former Wing pilot ever since the first Eve's War. To get a chance to actually become more than friends was an exciting, yet daunting thought, and Duo couldn't help but be nervous. Heero had been acting differently already; he'd opened the car door for Duo, even going as far as to actually help him into the cab. It wasn't that the simple courtesy bothered Duo, but Heero had never done that before, and Duo didn't know if Heero was just trying to show him that he was serious about this being a real date, or if Heero was trying to assert himself as the dominant male role in their newly developing... whatever it was. Duo didn't like the possibility of Heero getting the wrong idea of how a more-than-friends relationship would work between them. Heero might actually think that there were masculine/feminine roles even though they both were male. Duo certainly wasn't feminine in any way, and he sure as hell didn't see Heero like that either. He didn't have a problem with being submissive in a sexual relationship, but he figured he'd be aggressive just as often; he was pretty sure that he'd like it both ways. If he and Heero were truly going to add that aspect to their friendship, it would have to be an equal partnership, pure and simple. He didn't know if Heero really understood that.
"Here you go," the cabby said as they pulled up to the center. "That'll be seven-fifty."
Duo quickly pulled out a ten and handed it to the man before Heero could get out his wallet. "Keep the change, buddy." He noticed Heero's unhappy look at him paying and felt a bit annoyed by it.
Heero got out of the car, offering a hand to Duo again. Duo looked up at the other boy, trying to figure out his motives. Seeing nothing of the former expression, Duo took Heero's hand, allowing him to assist him once more. Once they were on the sidewalk, he waited for Heero to let go, but the dark-haired boy just began leading them towards the main door. Duo was even more surprised when Heero laced their fingers together, indicating that he planned on continuing to hold hands. In some Asian cultures, that was something considered more intimate than a kiss. Duo couldn't believe that Heero had adapted his thinking this way so quickly. The braided boy was still trying to accept that he could openly look at Heero... let alone hold hands or kiss. It wasn't that he was uncomfortable with it, but not knowing if Heero was doing it only because he thought he was expected to, or if he just really wanted to, was bothering Duo. He didn't like this kind of tension, and even though the contact was nice...
"Ne, Heero?" Duo began, slowing his steps. "I don't know if you're just trying to be considerate, or if you're being aggressive, but I was a soldier same as you, and I don't need you to treat me so, you know, carefully." He watched a look of discomfort cross Heero's face, but didn't know what to make of it.
Heero had been wondering why Duo had seemed so distant since they'd gotten into the cab. He hadn't realized his actions could be taken like that. Touch had always been very important to Duo, and Heero had only wanted to prove to the braided boy that he didn't mind them touching in public. He knew they needed to talk and steered them off to the side of the convention center a few feet away from the front door. Once they were away from any potential prying eyes, he turned to face his friend.
"I didn't mean to imply that at all, Duo," he explained quickly. "I just wanted to let you know that I didn't mind being demonstrative while we're out tonight." He paused for a moment, wanting to lighten the mood. "I was trying to be more attentive now that we are 'consciously' dating." He smirked at his own choice of words and saw Duo smile in response. Mission accomplished.
Duo felt relief course through him. "Okay, Heero. I don't mind that at all. I just wanted to make sure you understood how I felt about... that whole issue. I mean, we're both guys, and although we'll have to, you know, take turns," Duo blushed at that thought then continued, "I wanted to make sure you didn't think I was going to be..."
"The girl?" Heero asked with a raised eyebrow, humor apparent in his voice.
Duo laughed. "Yeah."
Heero shook his head. "Duo, I could never mistake you for a girl. You may have beautiful long hair, but the former God of Death is definitely all male."
Duo smiled; he'd always wondered what Heero thought about his hair. It thrilled him to find out that the former Perfect Soldier hadn't been as immune to him as he'd once thought. As they made their way to the door, Duo gave into temptation, brushing his hand over Heero's backside teasingly as he whispered in his ear. "You'd better believe it. Maybe I can show you later just what you're dealing with here. I mean, you're all male too, so I guess that's going to make for some interesting bedroom dynamics, ne?"
Heero turned, blue meeting violet. He understood exactly what Duo was trying to say. "We can test each other's piloting skills," he agreed, his body tingling under Duo's touch.
With a bright smile, Duo reached past Heero, opening the door. "Talk about flying the friendly skies."
Heero groaned at the pun as he walked through the entrance. Once inside, Heero was surprised to feel Duo's hand rest at the small of his back, guiding him as they made their way through the crowd. Whereas the other touch had been teasing, this one was comforting. Even though Duo touched him all the time -- an arm slung around his shoulders, a punch in the arm, a tickling hand to the ribs -- this kind of touch was completely different. When Duo's hand moved away suddenly, Heero felt a kind of loss that was almost tangible. He looked over to find out why Duo had removed the welcomed warmth, only to see the braided boy waving in greeting to someone. Heero redirected his attention to see Quatre and Trowa standing across the room. Quatre was waving back, motioning for him and Duo to join them. Heero felt Duo's hand return to gently nudge him and a contented feeling washed over him; he decided he liked it.
"Let's keep the communication channels open," Heero said as Duo weaved them in between people.
"Roger that," Duo gave him a smile, his hand rubbing Heero's back gently. "I really want this to work."
"Aa. So do I," the Japanese boy replied, his voice becoming husky without him even realizing it.
"Heero! Duo! I'm so glad you guys could make it," Quatre greeted happily as they reached them.
"Good to see you," Trowa added, his eyes alight with contentment.
Duo grinned. "Hey, guys."
"Quatre. Trowa," Heero replied, nodding to both in turn. He tried not to be disappointed when Duo's hand fell away discreetly, but it still bothered him. It probably would have surprised most people to find out that he craved physical contact. He hadn't had much of it as a child, learning to accept displays of affection only after meeting the other pilots. He didn't have a problem with what others thought about him being with another guy, but he certainly didn't want to make Duo uncomfortable if the other boy wasn't ready to share the news it with anyone. He forced himself to focus on the conversation, trying to not dwell on how much he was missing the touch of Duo's hand already.
The four friends took the opportunity to get caught up with each other's lives. Heero was still busy with his consulting job with Preventers, even though Wufei was still trying to get him to become a field agent. Duo was continuing to dispatch salvage jobs from Earth while Hilde ran the scrap yard on L2. Quatre gave them an update on Winner Enterprises, and more information about the organization the dinner was being held for. Duo and Heero were pleased with how the charity was rebuilding some of the war-ravaged areas on the colonies. Trowa told them about his sister setting a date for her wedding finally, marrying one of the new circus performers in the troupe. Duo made a joke that her husband-to-be had better learn to dodge knives if he wanted to stay alive during an argument. That conversation lasted until it was time for dinner to be served, and they made their way into the banquet room together.
The meal consisted of braised chicken, baked potatoes, green beans, and Caesar salads. They sat at Quatre and Trowa's table, two empty seats announcing the fact that Wufei and Sally weren't able to make it that evening due to a sudden mission. With no one else at the table, the former Gundam pilots were able to relax and were soon discussing everything from Wufei's pet kitten to Une's new uniform policy. Quatre told them about the amusing board meeting he'd had the other day. Two of his senior officers were apparently having an affair; they had kicked the Personnel Director more than once trying to play footsies under the table, causing her to glare at them vehemently while she drew graphic caricatures of them being castrated. The Transportation Chief apparently hadn't been able to get his coffee that morning, and had used 'damn' in every sentence he'd uttered, much to everyone's chagrin. As if that wasn't enough, the meeting had ended with one of Quatre's sisters actually threatening the Director of Procurement with 'caning' if he didn't stop buying blue ink pens instead of black ones. By the time Quatre was done telling his story, everyone at the table was laughing, Duo even wiping his eyes.
All through dinner, Heero tried to make it a point to brush against Duo in some way -- a hand while reaching for his water glass, a leg while shifting his feet under the table. Duo in turn would give him knowing looks that promised... something... when they got home. Heero felt his heart flutter every time the other boy turned those violet eyes his way. He'd never thought being threatened could be so enjoyable, and that thought amused him to no end. He suddenly understood why Duo had always given him a mischievous look when Heero had threatened him during the war, and almost blushed as he realized it had all been a sexual joke to Duo. Dangerous foreplay. Of course, Duo wasn't threatening him with violence tonight. No, the American was threatening him with, well, Heero wasn't sure what Duo would do to him, but he had a feeling that he would like it.
Duo's reactions so far had reassured him that the other boy wasn't really trying to hide their relationship; he just wasn't declaring it either. For some reason, Heero wanted the others to know that Duo was with him as more than just a friend. He'd watched Quatre and Trowa over the years as their love had grown, and he wanted them to see that he and Duo had finally discovered each other's feelings. By the time they'd all finished eating, Heero was trying to find a way to enlighten their friends. He'd noticed that many couples had already made their way to the adjoining ballroom, the music pleasantly overflowing into the dining room. Heero turned to see Duo looking in that direction and thought about all the times Duo had tried to get him to go clubbing with him.
"Duo, would you like to dance with me?" Heero suddenly asked, surprising the American... and the other two boys at their table.
Duo hadn't expected Heero to be so open about them. Even though Heero had said public touches were okay, Duo had been trying to play it safe, not wanting to make Heero uncomfortable. From the way Heero had teased him through dinner, and now was asking him to dance, it seemed Heero was fine with others knowing. Duo decided there was no time like the present to 'announce it to the world', sort of speak. He certainly wasn't embarrassed about it. In fact, he was damn proud to be with Heero. Damn proud.
"Of course," he replied with a smile, accepting Heero's hand as he stood, the dark-haired boy already waiting beside him. They both ignored Quatre and Trowa's shocked looks as they made their way to the other room, but committed those expressions to memory for later enjoyment.
Once on the floor, Heero pulled Duo into a loose hold as they began to move in time to the music. Old Earth soft rock was playing, and the two boys soon fell into the rhythm. For the next couple of songs, they just let the music guide them around the floor. It was so much better than their usual 'psuedo-dates'.
"I'm really having a good time," Duo said softly, noticing how Heero's body brushed against his every so often; whether it was by coincidence or design, he was intoxicated nonetheless. He couldn't believe they were dancing in the Colonial Hotel ballroom together at a charity benefit in front of everyone. There were other same-sex couples on the floor, but Duo was still amazed that Heero was so willing to expose their new relationship. It spoke of how serious Heero was about them being together... like that.
"Me too," Heero replied, enjoying the feel of Duo's hands on his hips, his own hands resting on Duo's strong shoulders. The song changed, and as a soulful guitar riff began playing, Heero recognized it. He'd never really thought about the lyrics to this song before, having heard them only in passing on the days Duo had his stereo blaring through their room, but he found himself taking them in as they danced, letting the music seep into his soul as the words invaded his heart.
//Looking at the pages of my life, faded memories of me and you, mistakes, you know I've made a few. Took some shots and fell from time to time, baby, you were there to pull me through, we've been around that block a time or two. I'm gonna lay it on the line, ask me how we've come this far, the answer's written in my eyes//
Duo's breath caught as he heard what was playing. How many times had he listened to this song, alone in the room he shared with Heero, thinking about the Japanese boy? He didn't even realize that he was moving closer to Heero until he felt the dark-haired boy's hand tighten on his shoulder. Even though he knew Heero hadn't meant it as a rejection, Duo felt the familiar feeling of disappointment. He tried to remind himself that Heero wanted him to touch him, but that one reaction just seemed to speak louder than any of the words Heero had said all evening, and Duo couldn't keep from being hurt by it.
Heero listened to the lyrics, surprised at how apt they were for his and Duo's relationship. His eyes locked with the other boy's and something inside that had been lost for so long seemed to finally find its place within his heart. His grip tightened on Duo's shoulder, the feeling of completeness overwhelming him. In that moment, he realized that he had been searching for something without even knowing it, and that he had finally found it in Duo. The answer had been in violet all along.
//Every time I look at you, baby, I see something new, that takes me higher than before, and makes me want you more, I don't wanna sleep tonight, dreamin's just a waste of time, when I look at what my life's been comin' to, I'm all about lovin' you//
Duo was trying to soothe his hurt feelings, telling himself that he was reading too much into Heero's actions, when he noticed the way Heero was looking at him. It was like the words of the song filtered into his mind, and Duo suddenly felt exposed and vulnerable under that gaze. What was Heero thinking about? Was the song making him reconsider? Or was it making him look deeper inside Duo than he had before? Feelings of insecurity and doubt filled the longhaired boy, and he couldn't help but be afraid.
Heero felt his heart lurch when he saw fear in the eyes looking back at him. He rubbed the other boy's shoulder gently, asking him if he was all right. When Duo dropped his gaze, nodding unconvincingly, Heero knew something was wrong. Had he failed to respond to Duo in some way? He'd been wrapped up in his own thoughts for a moment, not even realizing that Duo had moved closer to him... wait... maybe Duo had thought he was ignoring him? Heero sometimes forgot how Duo struggled with feelings of not being wanted. Seeing the way Duo was acting, Heero was almost sure it had something to do with it. Reaching out to grasp the American's chin, he lifted Duo's face to look at him. He could see the hurt there, for whatever reason, and knew he had to do something to make it go away.
//I've lived, I've loved, I've lost, I've paid some dues, baby, we've been to hell and back again, through it all you're always my best friend. For all the words I didn't say, and all the things I didn't do, tonight I'm gonna find a way//
Duo was stunned as Heero began mouthing the words of the song to him. His mind went back to their conversation at the apartment, and he couldn't help but smile; it looked like Heero was serenading him after all. Duo's fear began to fade as he realized that he was jumping to conclusions without talking with Heero again. They had promised to keep the lines of communication open, and here he was trying to decode messages without the key. He needed to quit overreacting. He winked at Heero, and when the other boy smiled back, Duo felt his heart lighten. The words of the song suddenly became comforting.
//Every time I look at you, baby, I see somethin' new, that takes me higher than before, and makes me want you more, I don't wanna sleep tonight, dreamin's just a waste of time, when I look at what my life's been coming to, I'm all about lovin' you//
Heero felt relieved as Duo began smiling again. He moved his hand up to caress the other boy's cheek, and was rewarded with Duo moving into the touch. The softness of Duo's skin against Heero's callused thumb reminded the dark-haired boy of how fragile Duo could be sometimes inside, despite his outward strength. Heero could feel Duo sliding his hands up his back, their bodies pressing even closer than before, and he knew that whatever had been bothering the other boy before had been dealt with, at least for now. Heero looked into Duo's eyes to see his own need staring back at him. He couldn't deny it, and he felt his own breath catch as he leaned forward, his lips meeting Duo's in their first kiss.
//You can take this world away, you're everything I am, just read the lines upon my face, I'm all about lovin' you//
Duo sighed into the kiss, tightening his hold around Heero's waist. All thoughts of anything but the feeling of Heero's lips ceased to exist for Duo as the Japanese boy's mouth moved over his in sweeping motions, igniting a passion inside the former God of Death that he'd never known existed. He realized in that moment that he would walk through fire for this feeling. His doubts just disappeared, the truth of Heero's awakening feelings for him making itself known in a way that couldn't be ignored.
//I'm all about, I'm all about, I'm all about lovin' you//
Pulling back slightly, Heero slipped his hand behind the other boy's neck, his fingers sliding into the base of Duo's braid. They just stared at each other for a moment, neither one able to deny what they'd felt in that one kiss. Heero knew a moment of self-consciousness, this being his first kiss. He was sure that Duo had experienced at least a few before it, and was once again amazed that Duo would want him. Who was he, that such a bright spirit would share his dark soul and give his fragile heart? He almost laughed when he thought about what Duo would say to that. Maybe he could write it down and give it to the other boy with a huge box of chocolates.
//Every time I look at you, baby, I see somethin' new, that takes me higher than before, and makes me want you more, I don't wanna sleep tonight, dreamin's just a waste of time, when I look at what my life's been coming to, I'm all about lovin' you//
Duo saw the happiness on Heero face and leaned in again, wanting one more kiss before the song was over. His earlier fears were gone, burned away by the passion he could feel in Heero's touch. The warmth in the Japanese boy's eyes was almost unnerving. Duo didn't know what the other boy was thinking, but he could tell it probably involved embarrassing or annoying his person in some way, shape, or form. Heero was getting good at that kind of thing, even as just friends, and Duo didn't even want to think about the possibilities now that they were going to become more than that. At that thought, he licked Heero's bottom lip, his tongue teasing until he felt Heero's mouth open. Duo certainly was not going to refuse that kind of invitation.
//I'm all about lovin' you//
Heero felt himself beginning to become aroused as Duo plundered his mouth and knew they needed to leave the dance floor before this got out of hand. Still, his tongue met the other boy's, tempting the former God of Death, giving him a promise of where this would lead if Duo wanted it. At that thought, Heero pulled away, giving Duo one last nibble. They ignored the open stares they received as they walked back towards their table. Quatre and Trowa were just sitting back down, apparently having joined them on the dance floor. Heero smirked as he realized that they had followed them out there to see what was going on.
Quatre's face was a mixture of joy and shock when Duo and Heero reached the table, but the blonde didn't say a word, just smiled. Heero noted Trowa's raised eyebrow and could almost hear the silent question. The Japanese boy was already feeling the loss of Duo's touch again; he looked back at Trowa with a small smile and pointedly reached down to take Duo's hand in his, answering his own need and the other boy's unspoken inquiry at the same time.
Duo had taken stock of the situation as they'd returned to the table and had decided to let Heero handle it. He was asking Quatre about the project the sponsored organization was going to be starting on L2 when he felt Heero take his hand. He squeezed in response, letting Heero know that the touch was welcomed. He'd never expected Heero to be such an affectionate... lover? Was Heero his lover even though they hadn't been intimate yet? Duo smiled when he thought about it; yes, Heero was his lover. That title was more about feelings than sexual acts. If he were honest, he'd been Heero's lover for a long time.
Quatre noticed Heero's simple movement, confirming what he and Trowa had pretty much figured out from the kisses on the dance floor. "It's about damn time," he beamed at both of them, bringing the topic up for discussion finally.
"When did this happen?" Trowa questioned them, obviously glad to be able to say something about it.
"Us, dating?" Heero asked casually, enjoying the annoyed sighs coming from both boys at the same time. He decided to have pity on them. Besides, he wanted to share this. "Apparently, it's been happening for some time now. I was just unaware of it," the Japanese boy deadpanned, his eyes brimming with humor.
"Well, I just didn't want you to move too fast," Duo joined in, laughing violet telling Heero he wanted to play. "I figured once you actually knew we were dating, you'd try to get me into bed, and I wanted to see if we could live together first without killing each other before I let you have your wicked way with me."
Heero looked at him, wondering how far the other boy was willing to go with this. "Since we've been living together for quite some time now without, as you put it, 'killing each other', I guess that means we're compatible. I should, under your conditions, get to have my wicked way with you when we get home tonight. I haven't been able to keep my hands off of you as it is."
Duo grinned, not expecting his date to go along so well with his teasing. "Yeah, and I thought *I* was bad about that kind of thing!"
"We may not even make it home, ne?" Heero growled as he slid a hand up Duo's leg suggestively, causing the other boy to flush slightly. He was really beginning to enjoy this. Like most things with Duo, it was fun. He was starting to really appreciate 'fun' things. He had a feeling his list would be growing soon.
Duo refused to get embarrassed, no matter what his complexion did. "Maybe not," he almost purred, leaning over to whisper in Heero's ear seductively, "but I get dibs on the pilot seat for our first time." He pulled away with a smug smile on his face, noting Heero's surprised look.
Heero raised an eyebrow. "I don't know about that. Even if you have more flight time than I do, I think I could maneuver well enough to take over the controls..."
Quatre coughed. "I can't believe you guys are talking about it like that," he said, his own pale skin tinged pink. His aqua eyes were glowing with happiness in spite of it.
Trowa snickered at Heero. "Don't underestimate Shinigami," he warned. "I didn't think Quatre would be so territorial, but I was sitting on a pillow for three days after our first..."
"Trowa!" came the blonde's strangled voice, kept at a reasonable level so as to not draw attention, but loud enough to convey his embarrassment.
Duo laughed. "Why, Quatre, I never knew you were such a forceful aviator."
The blonde turned even redder, "Well I'm sure as hell not a passenger," he huffed, a little indignantly. He looked at Heero. "I'm sure Duo won't be either, so you'd better give him a chance to..."
"Take off as well as land?" Heero asked with an innocent look on his face.
Both of Trowa's eyebrows shot up under his bangs, Quatre just sputtered, and Duo damn near fell out of his chair from laughing so hard. When they'd all composed themselves, Duo suddenly realized he was starting to get tired. He didn't want to be exhausted when they got home; he had some flight plans.
"Why don't we call it an evening?" he asked Heero hopefully.
Heero nodded, feeling his body heat up at the intense look Duo was giving him. "All right." He turned to the other two boys. "Thank you for inviting us. I'm glad we could support something like this."
Quatre smiled. "Thank you for coming."
"Oh, we haven't done that yet, Quat, but if Heero is as lucky as Trowa seems to be, he just might tonight," Duo remarked, causing Quatre to exclaim 'Duo!' and Trowa to choke on his drink.
"Duo..." Heero said warningly, only receiving an unrepentant grin in reply. He turned back to their hosts. "I think he's on some kind of testosterone-induced high. I'll try to get him calmed down by the time you two come over for dinner next week," he offered, smirking as Duo punched his arm playfully.
"By all means, Heero, wear him out if necessary," Trowa replied solemnly as he wiped the club soda from the front of his shirt. Amused green eyes met deep blue. "Just be sure to not kill yourself in the process."
"My suicidal days are over," Heero retorted calmly, giving Duo a look. "And he never did take 'omae o korosu' seriously, so I think we're both safe."
Duo gave him a confused frown before understanding dawned. "Wait a minute, you never said you meant *that* kind of death!"
They all laughed and then said their good-byes.
"So, you want to take a walk in the park before catching a cab home?" Heero asked as they left the convention center. The sky was clear, and he knew how much Duo loved to look at the moon.
Duo considered it for a moment. "Actually, I think I'd like to stop off and get some ice cream at that shop around the corner. Is that okay?"
Heero nodded. "Sounds good. We could get it and then go to the park, if you want."
Duo smiled. "Yeah. Let's do that."
They made their way to the 'Ice Castle'. About fifteen minutes later, they exited the shop, Duo with a double dip of Macadamia fudge, and Heero with a cone of Peanut butter cup. They then walked leisurely to the city park. The night was breezy, yet warm enough that they weren't cold in their shirtsleeves. As they made their way through the trees to a bench, Heero reached out and took Duo's hand again, but this time, the braided boy anticipated it, eagerly lacing his fingers with the dark-haired boy's. They sat down, holding hands and licking their ice cream.
"This has been a really nice night, Heero," Duo said as he looked up at the stars above them.
Heero sighed contentedly. "I've enjoyed it more than I ever thought I would."
Duo looked at the other boy, watching the breeze rustle Heero's unruly brown locks almost lovingly. "It's not over yet. I... I wasn't kidding about what I said earlier."
Heero finished eating his cone and then turned to face Duo. "Listen, I don't want to make you feel like we have to jump into bed just to prove that we want each other. I think we've both realized that there is more here than friendship. Nothing has to happen until you're ready."
Duo licked the sticky remains of his treat from his fingers, smirking slightly. "What if I'm ready now?"
"Well, I'm not saying that I wouldn't like to," Heero replied, "I just..."
He was interrupted by Duo leaning over and claiming his mouth in a passionate kiss. He could taste the chocolate on Duo's lips, the flavor merging with the peanut butter on his own, and before either one knew what was happening, he pulled Duo to straddle his lap. Their bodies began moving against each other's as their tongues delved into each other's mouths. Duo buried his hands in Heero's wind-kissed hair, and Heero grabbed Duo's braid, wrapping it around his wrist possessively. They could feel the heat rolling off of each other, their clothed erections pressing together desperately, as they moaned in pleasure and need. They were slowly losing control, and reluctantly, Heero pulled back, gazing into passion-hazed violet.
"We need to get home," he said simply, trying to slow down his heart rate.
Duo was panting heavily. He slid off of Heero's lap and held out a hand to him. "Yeah," he said, as Heero grasped his fingers, standing with him so they could go hail a cab as quickly as possible.
Heero unlocked the apartment door, lingering outside for a moment as he turned around to see his date giving him an amused look. "Thank you for going out with me tonight."
Duo smirked. "Heero, I want my 'goodnight kiss' inside."
Heero flushed slightly but turned back around to open the door. Shoes and socks were removed and set aside almost immediately before Duo proceeded into the living room, leaving Heero to secure their deadbolt. The American started to turn on a light when he was suddenly pulled into eager arms, the dark-haired boy's mouth covering his before he could even think. He wrapped his own arms around Heero's neck, bringing their bodies into closer contact.
"I don't want to say 'goodnight' yet," Heero whispered against his lips.
Duo's hands reached for Heero's tie, undoing it, and dropping it on the floor. "Me neither."
They stood there kissing for the next few minutes. Hands roamed, mouths devoured, and groans echoed. Duo rocked his body into Heero's, relishing the hardness that met his. "I think we'd better... take this to the... bedroom," he panted.
Heero was so aroused he could only nod in agreement. Together, they made their way towards the room they had always shared, even though the apartment had a second one. Heero went towards his bed, but Duo pull away before reaching it. The Japanese boy turned to watch the American select a CD from the rack, place it into the player, and set the controls for auto-repeat. A familiar song softly filled the room -- the song that had played during their first two kisses.
"Dance with me, Heero," Duo said, his voice husky with need. He wanted to take his time -- wanted to remember this night for the rest of his life. There would be plenty of opportunities for them to have rough and tumble sex. Right now, he needed to make love with the boy who had captivated him with those deep blue eyes years ago during a war he never thought he'd survive.
Heero walked over to where the other boy stood in the middle of the room. They practically fell into each other's arms and began dancing the way they had wanted to near the end of the evening in the ballroom. Their lower bodies rubbed tantalizingly as hands massaged backs and backsides. For how long they danced, neither one could have said, the music serving to temper and heighten their passion in turns.
It was a teasing kind of foreplay, both of them wanting the evening to last a little longer. They finally found themselves standing by Duo's bed, and Heero let go of the other boy, stepping back to begin unbuttoning his shirt. He watched the intensity build in those violet eyes as he revealed himself to their owner. His hands dropped to his pants, button and zipper undone a little more quickly as his own control began to slip a bit. Eyes still on Duo, Heero pulled down his pants and boxer briefs in one motion, and then sat down, sliding back onto the bed completely naked, waiting.
Duo let his eyes rake over the body on display for him. Heero had matured physically, his compact form gaining more height and muscle. Shoulders were broader, chest and stomach were well defined, but he was still lean and wiry. When Duo looked at Heero's erection, jutting from between his legs where it was nestled in dark brown curls, he couldn't help the desire that coursed through him. Heero was just the right size for him -- not too big, not too long. Violet eyes looked back up to meet nervous blue ones.
"You're beautiful, Heero. Absolutely... kiryoumake," Duo almost whispered.
Heero felt relieved at those words. He'd always wondered how he compared to others, hesitant to actually look when in showers or restrooms because he didn't want anyone to get the wrong idea. He watched as Duo began to remove his own clothes, shirt, pants, and boxers falling to the floor with excruciating deliberateness that made Heero want to scream. When the braided boy finally stood there nude, Heero let his eyes roam unabashedly, noting that what was under those boxers was just as 'beautiful' as the rest of him. Weeping hardness, pulsing with need, was surrounded by reddish-brown softness. Heero hadn't ever seen Duo before, not even at those schools they'd attended together. Duo was about the same size, maybe a slight bit longer, but definitely about the same girth. Heero looked up and smiled.
"Not as kiryoumake as you are," he replied, smiling at the incorrect, yet apt, use of the term.
Duo gave him a smile, knowing what he meant. He then reached back to release his braid, his hair coming loose from its confinement, swirling around him in silken waves. Duo loved the sensual feeling as it brushed against his bare skin; he knew Heero was going to enjoy it too. He knelt on the bed, moving to straddle the other boy's hips as he had on the bench in the park. Leaning down he licked Heero's ear lobe and whispered, "We're both lucky bastards. Let's just be thankful and make each other scream, ne?"
Heero moaned as Duo's curtain of chestnut surrounded him, caressing him like a living being. Duo slid forward more, and both gasped as their erections met sans clothing for the first time. Lips touched, tongues dueled, and bodies moved. Heero's hands grasped Duo's hips, setting a rhythm for their thrusting. Duo finally reached down between them, taking both of their lengths in hand, causing the tips to brush against each other, smearing the wetness they were both leaking.
"I want to... make you come, " Duo breathed heavily, his thumb sliding over Heero's slit.
Heero nodded, panting as well. "Onegai, I want to..."
Duo's hand kept the heads rubbing together, their mutual passion lubricating their hot flesh. Silken steel mated with velvet hardness, as Duo pumped them. Minutes went by as he continued to stroke and caress them both. It felt so good. "Heero... I can't take... much more."
"Duo... please... I need...faster..." Heero moaned, lost in the sensation of Duo's body against his own.
Their hips were still rocking even as Duo's hand increased its pace, causing them both to cry out in pleasure as they worked towards completion. Duo knew Heero was getting close, the other boy's hands gripping Duo's hips as he arched into his touch. Duo was almost there, his own body crying out for release of the tension that had been building all evening. He groaned as Heero's hand slipped between them to fondle his balls. The tentative touch was all it took to finally bring the longhaired boy off.
"Heero... oh, yeah... oh, yeah... oh yeahhhhh!" Duo yelled out as his orgasm hit him like a tidal wave. Pleasure crashed over him as his seed pulsed out to coat his and Heero's erections. He continued to pump them, reveling in the feeling of Heero's shaft hardening even more in his hand as the other boy began begging for relief. Duo reached down to massage the dark-haired boy's sac, returning the obviously appreciated favor. Duo was still riding the waves of completion when Heero's crested.
Heero felt Duo's release, the other boy's arousal shuddering against him, bringing him only a step away from his destination. "Duo... please... Duo!" Heero cried out, needing more. Duo then cupped his balls, rolling them between those sensual fingers, and the combined sensations sent Heero over the edge. "Oh, Duo... yes, Duo... yes, Duo, yes, Duo!" His essence erupted from his shaft, mixing with his lover's as the American continued to stroke, coaxing out every single bit of passion Heero had in his body. He shook from the intensity of his completion, feeling the warmth of his seed as it was rubbed all over his sensitized skin. He found immense satisfaction in knowing that it also covered Duo's length.
Duo pulled back, his bangs wet with sweat. "Damn, Heero. That was..." he paused, trying to find the right word, "suge -- wonderful." He smiled at his choice, knowing Heero would appreciate it.
Heero smirked back, his own hair plastered to his forehead. "Hai. It was suge -- amazing." He suddenly collapsed backwards, pulling Duo with him. They ended up with Duo sprawled over him, that long hair billowing around them. Heero sighed happily. "You even got to handle the controls the whole flight."
Duo snorted. "Very funny. I'll show you 'handling controls', fly-boy. We'll see who does the...mpfh..."
Heero silenced him with a kiss that led to another trip to the clouds.
Heero lay in bed, looking at his new lover. Duo's hair was spread out, tangled around his sleeping form, and Heero couldn't help but smile. Last night had been so incredible. They hadn't done more than manual and oral stimulation, but still; it had been something he would never forget. Heero didn't even have words to describe it. When he'd first awakened to find himself snuggled against Duo, it had taken him a moment for it to register that he could wake up this way every morning. That realization had made him so completely happy that he'd lingered for a few minutes longer, just watching Duo sleep. It was Sunday, and neither one of them had to be anywhere. He thought about how Duo had seemed so hesitant at times during their date last night and wondered how the other boy would he react this morning. Blue eyes took in the sleeping figure before the Japanese boy slipped out of bed quietly so as to not disturb the other occupant. There was something that he needed to do.
Duo opened his violet eyes sometime past ten and frowned. Something was missing. His mind raced for a moment, trying to recall the previous night, and he suddenly realized that the pillow next to his had been slept on. He remembered the date and smiled. He thought about the dinner, the dance, the ice cream, the park, and then the night spent in Heero's arms. He wondered why his lover was up already. A sudden thought caused his smile to waver for a moment -- what if Heero regretted it? He remembered the look in Heero's eyes when they'd finally said 'goodnight', and told himself that he was being stupid to even worry, but it wouldn't hurt to make sure of the situation before assuming anything. Taking a deep breath, Duo slid out of bed and pulled on his boxers. It was time to see what his lover was doing, make sure things were okay, and maybe get him to do something more... interesting.
Heero watered the herbs sitting on the windowsill in the kitchen. They had been a Christmas gift from Duo, the other boy knowing Heero loved to cook with fresh ingredients. His eyes kept wandering to the new pot sitting on the table. He'd found it at the Japanese import shop a few weeks ago, the kanji on the outside speaking of love, devotion, and faithfulness. At the time, he hadn't known why he was buying it; now he did. As of this morning, it held one of his newly blooming cacti, a beautiful violet flower just beginning to open. Heero smiled when he felt the presence of the one that flower reminded him of. Glancing over his shoulder, he saw Duo standing in the doorway, an unreadable look on his face.
"Morning," Duo said softly as his eyes took in the new addition of Heero's 'garden'.
Heero noticed the interest and was pleased. "Ohayo, koi. Sleep well?"
Duo nodded, his heart skipping a beat at Heero's easy use of the term of endearment. "Aa. You?"
"Hai," Heero replied. Before there was a chance for awkwardness to set in, he turned and picked up the jade green pot with the black lettering and handed to Duo. "This is for you."
Duo's face lit up like the sunrise. "For me?" He held it in his hands like it was going to disappear.
"Aa. I want you to have it so you will always remember the morning after our first date," Heero began to explain. "I want you to look at it whenever you forget that there is nothing that will ever take away my feelings for you." One minute Duo was looking at him in awe, the next he was kissing Heero soundly.
"Gomen," Duo breathed, his hands delving into Heero's hair. "I don't mean to be such an insecure baka."
Heero snorted, kissing Duo's nose. "How you could be insecure after last night is beyond me."
Duo gave him an intense violet gaze. "Because I still can't believe that you really want me?"
Heero tucked a strand of hair behind the other boy's ear. "Do I have to spend all day in bed in order to prove it?" he asked, his voice dropping to a sexy timbre that Duo knew he was going to hear a lot.
"Um... maybe?" he replied, his temperature rising suddenly as Heero's hand moved down his back.
"Ninmu ryoukai," Heero whispered, suddenly lifting the other boy.
"Heero!" Duo yelped, wrapping his legs around his lover's waist as he was carried out of the kitchen. "I haven't even eaten yet!" His protests soon died when he was told there would be an in-flight meal.
Moments later, music filled the other room. It was a couple of hours before Heero emerged to make quick sandwiches and grab some sodas. Laughter ensued when he brought the impromptu 'brunch in bed' to his spent lover. No less than an hour later, moans of pleasure filled the air, joining the lyrics playing again. Track six had become 'their song', and they spent the rest of the afternoon reassuring themselves and each other that the words were just as true as they had been the night before.
//Every time I look at you, baby, I see somethin' new, that takes me higher than before, and makes me want you more, I don't wanna sleep tonight, dreamin's just a waste of time, when I look at what my life's been coming to, I'm all about lovin' you//
They were.
The End
