Heero was waking up. And he really really didn't want to, since he was having that dream again. Slender but strong arms held him tightly while his head rested against the rumpled cloth of a black shirt. And he knew that if he moved his hand just a little bit he would feel that long rope of chestnut silk... He sighed happily, floating in the comforting shadowland between sleep and wakefulness. He knew that when he woke up, he would have nothing left but the echo of that contentment... But for now he just wanted to lay here in this tight embrace, with the steady sound of Duo's heartbeat in his ear.
Wait.
Only half awake, he ran that last part through is mind one more time. Heartbeat? For some reason that thought bothered him. Annoyed that he couldn't stay in that pleasant state any longer, he quickly brought himself to wakefulness, and realised that he still had the sound of a heartbeat in his ear. Very unsure of what to think of all this, he sighed and lifted his head from what he still had trouble believing was Duo's chest.
And looked straight into deep violet smiling eyes.
"Good morning", the owner of those amused eyes said in a warm voice. "Did anyone ever tell you how downright adorable you look in the morning?" And then Duo kissed him on the nose.
All Heero could do in response was blink in surprise. Did Duo just say what he though he said? Maybe he really was still dreaming. Maybe OZ had captured him and was testing some new drug on him.
Seeing the different expressions on Heero's usually impassive face, Duo gave him another amused smile. "Nope, you're awake all right!" And then he got a decidedly mischievous look on his face. "Want me to prove it?"
Still in a daze, Heero blinked again as Duo's face came closer, and when their lips met he closed his eyes. If this were how the dream was going to be, he would just remain asleep for as long as he possibly could.
The kiss started out gentle, Heero being obviously inexperienced. As soon as he got the hang of it though, he became more active. Duo made an appreciative sound as he felt Heero becoming really enthusiastic. This was so like him, he thought wryly; no matter the situation, he approached it with the same single-minded concentration. Being the focus of Heero's attention was an experience impossible to describe, but "intense" would be a good beginning. He deepened the kiss and let his tongue spar with Heero's. Could things possibly get any better than this?
Oh yes they could, his body informed him as Heero unconsciously rubbed himself against him, if he would just speed things up a bit...
The caresses quickly became more heated, and their hands had just started to wander beneath their clothing when both boys froze at a low but insistent beeping noise. Quietly swearing, Heero untangled himself from Duo and pulled out a small communication device from the back of his spandex shorts. He gave it a brief glance and then turned to Duo.
"I have to go."
Duo just nodded, eyes hidden beneath his bangs. He followed Heero when he stepped out in the sun, but before he had a chance to leave Duo grabbed his shoulders and kissed him hard one last time, his hands almost painfully squeezing Heero's shoulders. Then, without saying a word, Heero turned and ran.
Duo followed Heero with his eyes until he disappeared in the forest, unable to find words that would adequately describe the situation. Not even he had ever run into someone who could curse like that. Frowning at the opening between the trees where Heero had disappeared, he tried to calm himself. Of course, he worried when any of his friends were on a mission, and maybe just a little bit more when it was Heero or Wufei... But with Heero the chance of self-destructing always seemed greater for some reason. Granted, he lived through his previous attempts, but he wasn't immortal. Well, probably not anyway.
He shook his head and leant back against Deathscythe, squinting at the rising sun. They all had to live with it the chance that this mission could be the last, that this time you wouldn't make it back. And a person like Heero, with no sense of self-preservation at all... When you thought about it, that Heero had survived this long was nothing short of a miracle, Duo mused. Maybe he too had a god watching over him. Probably the god of destruction or something like that, considering how many tributes he had brought that particular presumed deity.
Snorting at his inner rambling, he made sure that Deathscythe was covered and had all the security and shielding systems active, and then left for the safehouse. After all, he had promised... but he might have done it anyway. It seemed like the right thing to do for some reason, and he knew better than to let any chances pass him by. With the lives they were leading, it wasn't something any of them could afford. And with their pasts...
Making sure not to leave any tracks while he made his way through the sunlit forest, he considered the information he had found on the other pilots. The files he had dug up had turned out to hold surprisingly tragic stories. The only one he hadn't found any information on was Trowa. Or, more accurately, he had found files on a Trowa Barton who should have been the one to pilot Heavyarms. He was dead.
This lack of information bothered him slightly, but he could live with it. None of the things he had found had affected his trust in the other pilots, since he preferred to make up his own mind in these things. He had still wanted to check out what kind of people they were though, and he had no doubts that at least some of the others had done the same.
Briefly he wondered what they might have found out about him. Not much probably, considering his childhood, and since he got older he'd learned how to cover his tracks. The things professor G had on him was probably long since destroyed.
Since he knew the way, Duo reached the house they were currently using as their hideout much faster than it had taken Heero to get to Deathscythe. Well then, he thought, I guess this is it! Wufei would probably be awake, but even if Quatre and Trowa had returned from their mission they would still be asleep. Which was good There was no way of knowing how Wufei would react to this particular piece of information... He shook his head, and went inside.
Just as Duo had predicted Wufei was already up and was having his morning tea in the kitchen. He was also brooding, and the beautiful morning weather was totally lost on him.
His sense of honour and duty told him that he had done the right thing, but he couldn't stop the feeling of jealousy making a slow steady burn in the pit of his stomach. They had been gone the entire night after all. Did that mean that he had lost his chance? Or maybe he never had a chance to begin with...
His thoughts were suddenly interrupted by the sound of the front door opening and closing. Listening carefully he could hear someone walking hesitantly towards the kitchen. Hm. Not Heero then. But it didn't sound like Duo either When you heard him, you heard him. If he didn't want to be noticed he was more silent than a shadow. Therefore Wufei was at a total loss for words when he turned around to greet whoever it was, and found himself facing the object of his recent thoughts.
"Morning, Wufei", Duo said with a nervous smile.
"Good morning."
They stared at each other for a while. Then Wufei gave himself a mental shake. What was he doing, staring like some lovestruck teenage girl? Then something else occurred to him. Duo wasn't even looking at him, but was instead staring at his feet and fiddling with his braid. Any fool would recognize the signs of nervousness. That was something he thought he would never see... What could be the reason? Seeming to make up his mind, Duo walked in and sat down in one of the other chairs. Fiddling with his braid, probably without even noticing it, he started talking.
"Look, Wufei, I need to talk to you about something," he said.
Not daring to look at Wufei yet, he wondered how he was going to tell him this. He knew Wufei pretty well by now he hadn't given up befriending him despite how unwilling the Chinese boy had been in the beginning and knew that Wufei had very strong beliefs in certain things. And Duo had absolutely no idea were he stood when it came to love. It wasn't something he wanted to bring up, considering Wufei's past.
"I want to tell you that... um, I... " Damn, how was he going to say it? And Wufei just sat there with his usual calm appearance.
"Where is Heero?"
The sudden question caught Duo off guard.
"Huh? Um, he had a mission. He told me to go and see you, and tell you... well"
"Tell me what?"
"Last night", Duo began, "Heero managed to follow me to where I had hidden Deathscythe. Probably took him a couple of hours, but you know how he is."
Wufei nodded with a small smirk. Persistent was an understatement. Heero was easily the most single-minded person he had ever met,
"And then he told me... "
"That he was in love with you"
Surprised Duo looked up and met Wufei's deep but guarded gaze.
"Yeah... " He mumbled. Why was Wufei so damn calm? And how did he know? Well, never mind. Wufei always seemed to know more than the rest of them.
"But before that he wanted to talk about you"
That caught Wufei's attention. He couldn't have! Heero couldn't have told Duo about Wufei's feelings!
"What did he tell you?" Wufei asked, heart pounding but still managing to keep his calm appearance.
"Well, actually he wanted to ask me about you. How I felt for you. To tell the truth, he wanted to know if I was in love with you."
Wufei arched his eyebrows. So he had asked that, had he?
"You were able to reassure him then" Wufei said, relieved that he could at least keep his voice calm. Where was Duo going with this conversation anyway?
"Sure did," Duo answered with a lopsided and a bit nervous grin, "but he wasn't so thrilled to hear that I do."
It took a moment for Wufei's mind to register what Duo had actually said, and when it did all he could get out was:
"You... you... what?"
Duo just got up from the chair and took a step back.
"Yeah, well, I had to tell you. I couldn't keep quiet anymore", he said defensively.
"But you just spent the entire night with Heero!" Wufei exclaimed.
"And can you believe we slept through the entire night?"
"So he did stay! Even after you told him... "
"Yeah, well, you haven't heard the best part yet. He stayed because I told him I loved him too. And it wasn't a lie either."
By now Duo was backed up against the door, prepared to leave if things got worse. Wufei just stared at him with a wild look in his eyes.
"So even when he knew how... how you felt about me," he managed to get out, "He still stayed?"
"Yeah. All he wanted to know was if I loved you more than him."
"And your answer to that?"
"I told him the truth. That I feel as strongly about him as I do you."
For a moment Wufei didn't know what to say. Then he relaxed and leaned back on the chair.
"Duo... Do you know why he and I argued yesterday?"
"Uh, no... At first I didn't even realise you were arguing", he answered caught off guard and blushing slightly when he remembered what he had thought they were doing.
"We were arguing about you."
"About me? How? Why?" Duo asked incredulously.
"We were arguing about which one of us was worthy of you. And weak as I am, I was still sure that Yuy was even less deserving."
Duo was just staring at him unbelieving.
"No... No way!"
"It's true. I still don't know how to feel about Heero... But I know that there is no reason that could make me let you go when I know that you have these feeling for me."
"Wufei... "
Slowly Duo approached the other boy, his smile becoming broader with each step.
"We'll make this work. Somehow", He said.
Standing right in front of Wufei, he looked him straight in the eyes, for once showing every single feeling rushing through his body. With a small whimper Wufei pulled him onto his lap, and captured his lips in a deep, slow kiss. For some reason he believed that Duo would be right about this.
