Ack! This did -=not=- turn out at all like I had planned! I started cause I was pissed at Misuzu for quitting her fic! I was writing it to be gory and mean and angsty and deathful.... I got that, but it ended up as a V-day fic..... and a kinda sad one at that. But really sweet at the end. Covers 3 years (3 Valentines' days [ A.C. 196 - A.C. 198 ]) Some of the lyrics/sections are ironic for one another (like the first section vs its lyrics). I'm thinking of writing a sequel to this, using Creed's 'One'. It'd be a Heero vs Relena stint if I did. Or that just may be another fic all together. I'm gonna eventually do that song anyway. With our further ado....

What's This Life For by Willow

Hurray for the child
That makes it through

[Duo lays at the foot of his demolished Gundam. Blood and dirt are matted in his hair and caked on his face, obscuring his delicate features. A liquidy gurgle rattles in his chest as he tries to breath. His face is bruised under the dirt and blood and his violet eyes are sunken in bruised sockets. His left arm is twisted up under him at an unnatural angle, the bone protruding from his torn flightsuit. Once shining violet orbs look dispasionately at the sky with flat, dull indifferance. He coughs and blood trickles out the side of his mouth.]

If there's any way
Because the answer lies in you

[*flashback*

Duo splashes around in the water at one of Quatre's estates. He and Heero are the only ones outside. Heero glares at him from the edge of the pool as he tries to avoid getting splashed.... unsucessfully. With a fierce growl, Heero launches himself into the pool and tackles Duo. Duo squaks and sputters, trying vainly to release himself from Heero's clutches and get air. He begins to panic, thrashing about wildly. Suddenly the arms around his waist are gone and his head breaks the surface with a gasp. He looks about wildly before finding himself face to face with his assailant. He stutters out an appology for splashing the other boy, but is silenced by Heero's lips on his and his hands clasped around Duo's bicepts, pulling him closer to the Perfect Soldier. Duo melts into the kiss, reveling in skin on skin. They break, breathless and gasping, and look into each other's eyes. Duo's eyes light up as Heero smiles a small smile before kissing him once again.

*end flashback*]

They're laid to rest
Before they've known just what to do

[Duo stares up at the darkening sky. He knows he has no hope of surviving through the night.... not unless someone finds him, probably not even then. He feels his life trickling out of him and pooling about his wrecked body. He cannot feel his lower body. He lifts his head slightly and notes that his the flightsuit is naught but a shred and his midsection is practically a gaping void. He whimpers slightly and closes his eyes, laying back against the muddy earth. His breathing and pulse slow as sleep takes hold.

Grey clouds over mottled green earth. Mud sloshes in the puddles as the tires of passing vehicles tread through them. Brakes squeal as the cars come to a stop, their occupants vacating and trudging over the sodden ground.

Very few people are at the location. Quatre holds onto Trowa, not looking, as the casket is lowered into the ground and the dirt is thrown over it. Wufei stands ramrod straight, tears mixed with rain trickling down his cheeks. Heero comes up to stand beside the grave marker, looking down on it, pain marring his face.

Duo Maxwell-Yuy
March 12 A.C. 180 - February 14 A.C. 197
"God's in his Heaven, all's right with the world."]

Their souls are lost
Because they could never find
What's this life for

[Heero watches as Quatre, Trowa, and Wufei leave. He notices another processioneer: Relena Peacecraft. She stands a good yard back from the burial site, looking at the headstone with something akin to disgust mixed with pity and sadness. Heero ignores her, stepping forward to place a single red rose on the headstone. After a moment, he stands and walks back to his car.

Relena watches sadly as he drives off, but she doesn't move to stop him. She understands. Turning, she stares up at the sky before moving to get into her car and drive off.]

I see your soul, it's kinda gray
You see my heart, you look away

[*flashback*

Duo sits on his bed watching Heero type madly away on his thrice-damned laptop. Duo doesn't really mind, it gives him time to drool over the Perfect Soldier. The boy he's lusted after -- no, fallen in love with!

Heero sighs and turns away from the computer. His eyes are their usual mirrored selves, expressionless. Duo frowns and firms his resolve. Standing he walks over to stand in front of Heero, then seats himself on Heero's lap, facing said boy. Before Heero can shove him away, Duo wraps his arms around the Perfect Soldier's neck and kisses him. He pulls away and gets off Heero's lap. He tells the boy that he loves him and that it's ok if Heero doesn't feel the same way, but Duo'd just had to tell him. Heero doesn't look at him. Duo shrugs and walks back over to the bed, not showing how disappointed and hurt he really is.]

You see my wrist, I know your pain
I know your purpose on your plane

[*further back*

Heero stumbles in late in the night after a solo mission. Duo's sitting up at the kitchen table in the safehouse, his face is worried. He hears the front door open and slam close; he jumps up and runs to help his partner. He chides Heero about worrying him. Heero pushes him away; he's mad about something. Duo senses this and asks him what went wrong. Heero tells him. He tells him about the little girl and her dog, too, then he gets pissed and yells that Duo wouldn't understand how her hurt inside. Duo grabs his shoulders and shakes him. He yells at Heero that he does know. He lets the blue eyed boy go and yanks the sleeve of his shirt up, exposing a long white scar from wrist to mid-forearm. He yells at him about his pain and his losses. He tells Heero about how everyone he'd ever cared for died on him.... died in his arms! He tells him about how he was raped and how he'd tried to kill himself repeatedly. He finally breaks down, tears streaming down his cheeks. He cries brokenly about how he cares about Heero and doesn't want to lose someone else he cares for. Heero gathers Duo into his arms and comforts the boy.

*end flashback*]

Don't say a last prayer
Because you could never find
What's this life for

[*flashback*

Duo tucks his cross into his shirt and pushes away from the bed where he kneels. Turning to find his fiancé standing in the doorway waiting for him. He smiles and walks over to kiss Heero on the cheek. Suddenly, Heero pulls a bouquet of wild flowers from behind his back. Duo's smile widens and he hugs Heero tightly. Heero smiles back and kisses him on the cheek, whispering 'Happy Valentines' Day' in the braided boy's ear. Heero handed the grinning boy a card. Duo opened it.

"Happy Valentines' Day this 14 February A.C. 196 to my beautiful koi. May our love last forever." it reads.

Duo looked at Heero, his eyes filled with love and happiness. He reached up with his left hand, ring glittering in the morning light, and pulled the taller boy's face to his, kissing him passionately.

(that afternoon)

The priest lead them through their vows and they kissed. Quatre sat in the front row, tears trickling down his face, smiling as the two walked past to exit the church.

(that evening)

The newly wed couple dance as the guests look on. They are so graceful and syncronized, their hearts even beat in unison. Eventually the party winds down and the couple slips off to enjoy their first night married.

(that night)

Slowly, Heero enters his lover, kissing down the line of the boy's neck to distract him from the pain. Duo gasps as Heero brushes that glowing pleasure center, sending jolts of electricity along his nerves. Heero begins to move, hitting that spot with each thrust until both boys are screaming their orgasms for the world to hear. They collapse together, sweaty and sated.... contented and happy.

*end flashback*]

But they ain't here anymore
Don't have to settle the score

[Heero watches out the window as the rain pours down. He remembers that Duo loved days like this one, where the rain poured down and pattered soothingly against the roof. Again, he is reminded that Duo isn't there anymore. He clutches his mug so hard the handle cracks, sending ceramic splinters into his palm. Releasing the cup he looks down at his hand, watching as the blood begins to drip from the wounds. Slowly he plucks the shards from his palm and wraps a bandage around it. Silently he wishes he could find the bastards responsible for his Duo's death.... but again, he is reminded of Duo. He remembers the boy saying, "If wishes were fishes we'd walk on the sea." And laughs lightly as a single tear slips down his cheek.]

Cause we all live
Under the reign of one king

[It has been a year since Duo's death. It's a cloudy day when Heero visits the grave. He brings with him a bouquet of roses and wild flowers. Along with the flowers he brings a laminated Valentines' card. He places the flowers and the card on the headstone and kneels before the marker. After sometime, he stands and walks back to his car. He looks back at the grave and notices that the clouds have parted and a ray of sunlight is streaming down to shine on the grave marker. He smiles and bids his beloved farwell for the day. He murmurs his wedding vows once more, for himself and for Duo, adding the promise that they will be together again.

"Ai shiteru, Duo. Itsumo da yo. Ima to zutto. Omae wa ore no mono to yui da koi."]

Owari

Notes:
[1] See a trend in the dates I like to kill people on? I've done that twice to Duo-chan. *grins*
[2] That last line is roughly: "I love you, Duo. Always!!!!! Now and forever. You are my one and only love." (koi can be read as part of the sentence or as an affection added to the end of the sentence, either way works.)
[3] Duo's b-day note: I used my b-day so Duo would have just missed turning 17. Makes it all the sadder since his death coincided with his wedding anniversaire (i cannot spell it in english *grimaces*).

Adieu,

(:./willow/whatslife)
