"Excuse me Your Highness, may I speak with you?"
The butler, Ender, stood in the doorway of the drawing room. Relena looked up from the report on colonial trade relations that she'd been reading. "Yes, Ender, what is it?"
"I've just heard the weather report, Your Highness. There is a heavy mist coming in from the sea and the Air and Space Port has been closed temporarily because visibility in the capital city is down to zero. The roads that connect the city to the Palace are predicted to turn treacherous within 30 minutes."
"Oh, well - thank you for letting me know, Ender. I'll inform the others, just in case any of them were thinking of going down into Millefort this evening."
"Very good Your Highness. There is one slight complication, however."
Relena blinked at the man, uncomprehending. "Complication?"
"Yes, Your Highness. Count Khushrenada was to drive down to his hotel in Millefort this evening, but with the roads being so dangerous... well I think you can see the problem." The butler trailed off and waited, impassively, for instruction.
/I don't believe it,/ Relena thought, closing her eyes and dropping her face to her hand. /I can almost believe he commanded the weather to be this way on purpose, just so he could stay near Brother.../ She looked back up at Ender.
"Very well, then - find him please and tell him he can stay for dinner. We'll see what the fog does. If it persists we can put him in the *west* wing." /Safely away from Brother.../
"Yes, Your Highness," Ender said, bowing graciously and turning to go. As he opened the door to the drawing room, he saw Sally and Noin in the hallway outside.
"Ender!" Sally said, "Have you seen Zechs?"
"I'm sorry," the butler replied, "I haven't seen His Highness in the Palace recently. Perhaps he is in the gardens?"
Relena, hearing her brother's name, came to the door of the room and peered out. "Noin, Sally - is anything wrong?"
"No, not wrong," Noin said a little shakily. "We were just looking for Zechs. Have you seen him?"
"No - he hasn't been around here. He might be outside..." She threw a glance to the mullioned windows at the far end of the hall they stood in. /It's dark. Why would he still be out in the gardens when it's dark?/
She smiled at the two women, then turned to Ender. "I'll go with Noin and Sally to look for Zechs while you look for Treize." It wasn't until the words were out that she realized the significance of them.
Noin's face looked pale. "T-Treize? Is he not around, either?"
"Well..." Relena bit her lip, not wanting to make things seem worse then they might be. "They might be having a talk in the garden," she said, trying to make her voice sound casual. "Why don't we go look?"
Having said that, she headed down the hallway and towards the French doors that opened onto the terrace. Sally and Noin exchanged glances and Sally squeezed Noin's shoulder before the two of them followed the younger woman.
Ender's face was inscrutable as he watched them all disappear around the corner.
"Ah, stars, Miri... let me... oh, let me!"
Treize's voice was raw silk in Zechs's ear, whispering, pleading for the blond's submission.
"Treize," he answered, his own words deep and husky. "I... I shouldn't... Noin... ah, god! " Treize had moved over him, lifted his legs and was teasing at his entrance. Just looking up at the man, beautiful as ever, somehow, and Zechs felt himself falling as he always had whenever he and Treize were alone like this. The former General could do something to him no one else could; make him ache with desire, give him looks that made him a writhing, wanton creature that would do anything to get more of the man above him.
"Glad to know I still have the same effect on you, Miri," Treize panted, nuzzling the damp skin of Zechs's neck. "How I love to have you all hot and needy beneath me..."
"Shouldn't..." Zechs whispered, head falling back onto the grass. "Treize... I shouldn't..."
"Oh, but you must, my love!" Treize pressed forward and Zechs moaned at being filled. "You're mine," the older man whispered, beginning a slow, steady rhythm. "You've always been mine, from the first moment I saw you as a child, I knew, Miri, the you were the one for me..."
He stroked, long and deep and held there, brushing his lips against Zechs's. "Only for me..." he whispered, before taking a long, possessive kiss.
The blond man closed his eyes at the touch of those lips, mouth seeming to open without thought to let Treize in as their tongues warred gently. /You promised -/ a voice within him refused to be still. /You promised another... this is merely sex, not love... he's always done this to you.../
Treize was moving again, faster and harder, and Zechs felt a single tear fall across his cheek, so intense was the feeling. /Yes... always done this to me... but... haven't I loved it? Haven't I... dear Lord, asked for it.../ Just then he felt his wrists pinned above his head and then Treize was flooding him and the heat of it carried Zechs over as well, soft cries from both of them rising in the warm, still air.
"Let's look in the rose garden," Relena suggested as the three women came out of the house onto the marbled terrace.
Noin felt her heart sink, thinking of the significance of that, but only nodded and followed the others down the steps in the gardens proper. Then she saw Howard, emerging from the trees, walking along the path that led to the lake and beyond.
Ender had been right - a great wall of mist seemed to be coming up on the Palace, off of the sea that lay just to the west. Already long tendrils of fog were curling around the house itself, moving silently into the gardens at the back.
Sally had spied the old engineer as well. "Howard!" she called out to him, "Howard, have you seen Zechs or Treize?"
Walking up to them, Howard nodded. "Sure, I've seen Zechs. He and I found some old walled garden out beyond the lake. We were there for awhile, talking. But it was, oh - at least thirty minutes ago that I left him. Hasn't he come back?"
"No," said Noin, trying to hide the misery in her voice, and not quite succeeding. "What about... what about Treize? Was he with Zechs?"
Howard shook his head. "Nope. Zechs was by himself when I left. Haven't seen Treize anywhere." He looked around at the gardens beginning to fill with fog. "Looks like they need to be getting back pretty quick, though - another 30 minutes and it'll be pea soup out here."
Noin had had enough. "I'm going to find him," she said in a determined voice, heading down the path that Howard had come.
"Whoa- slow it down there a second, Feisty," Howard called, trotting after her. "You're not going anywhere by yourself..."
"Come on, Sally," Relena sighed. "Let's go with them. Ender will be here if anyone shows up."
Sally nodded and they both followed Noin and Howard down the path.
"I really need to get back, Treize. Noin's probably worried..." Zechs was sitting up, gingerly, and pulling on his shirt. Treize sat up as well, sliding his arms around Zechs's shoulders and kissing the blond man's cheek.
"Of course love," he said in a causal tone. "Mustn't keep her waiting. I understand. So, what are we doing tomorrow... or later tonight?" Smiling against Zechs's ear, he gave the lobe a tender nibble.
"I... I don't know," Zechs answered, a shiver of pleasure running through him. I need to talk to Noin..."
Treize cupped Zechs's chin in his hand and turned the younger man's face towards his own. "Does that mean that you've decided, love? Have I convinced you that you and I are meant to be together? Hmm?"
"No, I haven't decided anything," Zechs said. "This... this has only made things more muddled. Damn you and your amazing body."
Treize let go of his chin and pushed Zechs to a standing position, following himself. "But it's my best weapon in this little... confrontation, dear friend. She's more than welcome to try to convince you that her body is better, of course."
"Let's just leave that topic alone, shall we?" Zechs said, and Treize nodded agreeably.
They were putting on their shoes when they heard the voices calling them.
"Zechs? Where are you? Can you hear me, Zechs?" It was Noin's voice and Zechs could recognize the fine edge of panic there.
"I'll be right there, Noin!" he called, hoping she could hear him.
"Zechs?? Is that you?" she answered. "Where are you?"
"Shall we make our appearance?" Treize purred next to him, brushing grass off of Zechs's hair.
Zechs could only sigh. Noin was not going to like the fact that he was out here alone with Treize. Not one bit. They walked out of the walled garden and down several feet of path when they saw the others emerge from the mist.
"Zechs," Noin breathed, walking up to him and sliding her arms around his waist. "I was beginning to get worried..."
"No need," Treize said congenially, walking up to stand beside Zechs. "I was with him. He was very safe. Weren't you, Miri?"
"Uh... yes, no problems, Noin. No need to worry."
Nevertheless, Noin slipped an arm through one of his and held tight to it. "That's good. But we really should get back - there seems to be a very heavy mist coming in."
"Heavens," Treize murmured, "I *do* hope I can get a car back to the hotel."
"No, Treize," Relena said reluctantly. "You're staying with us for the night. The roads aren't in a fit state to drive. Ender should have your room ready after dinner."
Noin's mouth fell open as she looked first at Relena, then at Zechs, and finally at Treize. All that came out, however, was "I see."
The walk back to the house seemed endless to everyone in the party, except for Treize. He was simply enjoying the very nice view he had of Zechs's backside as he walked, letting his mind drift back to the things they'd done in the garden.
Ender was waiting on the terrace when they got back. "Very good, Your Highness, you found him. Dinner is waiting." And with that he waved an elegantly gloved hand and gestured toward the dining room doors.
