The Perfect Gift by Minky

Trowa had been wondering around the shopping mall for nearly an hour but he still hadn't found what he was looking for. One more week to Valentine's Day. He wanted to get Quatre something special. But Quatre seemed to have everything. Nothing so surprising considering his wealth. But Trowa wanted to give him something meaningful, something that will show Quatre his love for him. There were many fancy little gifts on the displays but none of them was what Trowa was looking for. What was he looking for exactly, Trowa himself wasn't sure. After another round of futile search, he left the shopping mall.

Quatre took out his palette and paintbrush from the chest, slowly arranging the tubes of coloring materials on the table. He looked at these familiar items fondly. Quatre had loved music and painting since young. If music was his first love, painting was his second. But now, something, or rather, someone else had replaced his first love. Quatre blushed at the thought and turned his attention back to his painting stuff. It had been so long since he lasts painted. With a war to fight, he had no time to indulge himself in it. But today he was going to paint. He was going to put that beautiful image in his head onto his drawing board. Quatre smiled as he mixed his colors. It was going to be a beautiful painting.

Trowa sat quietly by the lion's cage, his mind in deep thoughts. He still hadn't figure out what to get for Quatre for Valentine's Day. Patting the lion gently, Trowa pour out his woes to the animal.

"Oh Mr. Lion, tell me want should I get for Quatre? What is the best gift that will tell him how I feel for him? I really have no idea," Trowa mumbled to the lion.

The lion growled softly as if it was sympathizing him. Trowa fingered his switchblade and looked at the sharp blade gleaming in the moonlight.

"Perhaps, I could... Yes, that's it." Trowa decided.

The next few days, Trowa and Quatre hardly see each other. Quatre was rushing to finish his painting while Trowa was occupied with something else. But both of them had arranged to meet on Valentine's Day.

When the day finally arrived, Quatre was feeling jittery. This was his first valentine with Trowa and he hoped it will be a very special one. His cook had whipped out a sumptuous candlelight dinner for his Quatre-sama.

"Young loves are always so innocent, so endearing," the cook thought, looking at his young master's nervous expression adoringly.

Trowa walked slowly into Quatre's compound, holding a small box in his hand. He was feeling apprehensive about his gift.

"What would Quatre say? What if he doesn't like it?" Worrying thoughts like these kept flashing in his mind. Trowa stood at the door for a moment before he mustered the courage to knock.

Almost instantly the door was opened and Quatre stood before him with a welcoming smile.

"Trowa, you are here."

Trowa gave a silent nod and stepped into the house, hiding his gift behind him.

"Dinner is ready. Let's have dinner first. I have something to show you later." Quatre gave him a playful wink.

"Umm... ok."

The dining room was dim with only the flickering light from the candles to brighten the room. There was a bottle of champagne and a vase of red roses on the table.

"Quatre had certainly made this valentine dinner into a splendid affair." Trowa thought to himself, amused by the blond boy's enthusiasm and effort.

They ate the dinner with Quatre carrying some light conversation while Trowa just listened in silence. After dinner, Quatre ushered Trowa to his room.

"Trowa, I... er.I have something for you. I hope you will like it." Quatre said as he walked towards the wall at left side of his room. There was something hanging on the wall with a piece of cloth covering it. Looking at Trowa excitedly, he pulled the cloth off to reveal a painting. It was a painting of Trowa with his lion.

Trowa stared at the painting speechlessly. Quatre had captured him and the lion's expression perfectly. The painting was utterly lifelike.

"Well, what do you think?" Quatre asked, looking at Trowa earnestly.

"How did you manage to capture this image so beautifully?"

"When I visited you at the circus, I always observe you." Quatre blushed.

"Observe me?"

"Yeah, like what you do, how you look. I can be very observant too."

"Obviously you do." Trowa smiled at Quatre, causing the boy to blush deeper. Then he noticed something in Trowa's hand.

"Oh, Trowa, what is that? Is it.is it something for me?" Quatre asked curiously.

So surprised was he to see Quatre's painting of him, Trowa had forgotten about his gift. He held it out to Quatre hesitantly. Quatre took the box in delight. Opening it, Quatre took out the item from the box and gasped in surprise.

It was a wooden miniature carving of a violin.

"Oh, this is so beautiful. Where did you find this?" Quatre flipped the violin over and saw the inscriptions at the back.

"To my beloved blond angel, Quatre. Love, Trowa."

Quatre turned to look at Trowa. "You carved this?"

Trowa nodded. "I don't know what to get for you so I carved this little violin for you. I know it's worthless and you will probably think it's a piece of junk."

"A piece of junk!? No way! This.this is a masterpiece, Trowa. This is something no amount of money can buy. It's something made by you, something very special." Tears rolled down Quatre's cheeks as he held the miniature violin possessively to his chest. Trowa frowned in worry and quickly brushed away his tears, holding him in his arms.

"Did I make you cry?"

"Yes, you did. But I'm crying because I'm happy. Trowa, this is a perfect gift. It shows me how much you love me. Thank you."

"Your gift to me is very meaningful too. It shows me that you know me so well to be able to capture my expression and mood into it. Thank you, my angel."

"Happy Valentine's Day, Trowa."

"Happy Valentine's Day, Quatre."

That night, the occupants of the room made perfect music in the bed with the painting and the miniature carving of the violin overlooking them from the other side of the room.
