Title: Wild Again
Author: Lasha Lee
Pairings: 1+2 maybe?
Disclaimer: I don't own Gundam Wing. The song "Wild Again" is by "Starship". *bows to mighty Jefferson Airplane/Jefferson Starship/Starship legacy*
Warnings: None. If you are bothered by anything in this story other than the sheer cheesiness you really need to consider seeking professional help.
Duo was almost asleep by the time the meeting ended. Blah blah. Budget cuts. Blah blah. New department. Blah blah, misuse of company property. Same old stuff every single time. The only thing the Preventers seemed to be preventing these days was their members from having any fun.
God, it was hard to sit still. Here on Earth, with no climate control, it was freezing cold. The air was so raw and alive. Everyone else was hiding from it, running away, bundling up. Duo, however, drank it up like a thirsty athletic guzzled water.
Finally. Finally the meeting was over and he bounced out of his chair, almost running toward the door, nearly knocking someone over in his haste. Free. He was free!
A diamond sun cuts down a frozen winter sky
As the world and I go screaming into the phantom night
He hit the seat of the motorcycle in a flying leap, gunning the engine and peeling rubber as he tore out of the parking lot. The sun was just beginning to set in the distance. It actually looked, to his delight, like there were 3 suns descending in the sky. Sun dogs, he knew it was called, when ice in the air reflected the sun back. The only way to tell the fake suns from the real one was that the fake ones had very faint rainbow colors behind the glow. It was beautiful, and very rare. He turned the bike toward it and increased his speed.
It doesn't matter where it leads, I got nowhere left to go
If there's any chance at all, it's somewhere down this road
The houses were a blur and he laughed as he roared past them, the sound swallowed by the engine.
To be wild again, no one's child again
Yeah I wanna see those eyes in the mirror full of fire again
Oh to be wild again
Once, once upon a time, he had been free. It hadn't seemed that way at the time, however. He had been too busy trying to stay alive to really notice and appreciate it. He had made his own rules, lived by his own schedule. There were no ties, no meetings, no deadlines. Where had that child gone? Had the man completely destroyed him?
The fading light is cold on the shoulders of the trees
Oh the starwind blows right through me, and I never felt so free
Oh there had to be a crossroad, a place to draw the line
And it came down to the question, is this life I'm livin' mine?
He steered the bike with one hand as the other ripped the tie from around his neck and flung it off behind him. He was freezing, for he had left his coat behind at the office, and the night air, now that it was dark proper, cut through his clothing to the skin below. He was unable to bring himself to care.
Had to be wild again, no one's child again
I wanna live every minute so hard that I wear it thin
I wanna find the edge, risk it all to win
I wanna see those eyes in the mirror full of fire again (Fire again)
I wanna be wild again (Wild again)
It was after midnight when he finally roared back into the parking lot of the hotel. His hair was loose and wild around his shoulders, his eyes bright and full of hope for the first time in nearly 10 years.
He made his way up to his hotel room, taking off his shirt and throwing it over his shoulder. It caught on a doorknob.
He picked up the phone and dialed a number.
"Yes, you heard me right. I quit."
"Oh yes I can! I just did."
"Well, you'll just have to find someone else to do it, won't you?"
He slammed down the phone and pulled out his traveling bag. Clothing fit for business meetings was dumped in a pile on the floor. Maybe the hotel could donate it. Duo Maxwell was not putting his neck in a noose for anyone, ever again. He pulled on two ragged sweaters and a pair of thick jeans.
Finally done, he hoisted the bag on his shoulder and looked around the hotel room.
The bike and the road awaited. A life was out there somewhere. Maybe he might even get lucky and run across Heero. Heero had known, he realized now. Heero had understood what a rare and wonderful gift freedom was and snatched it. And now Duo understood too.
"Look out, world. Here I come."
Wild again, no one's child again
I wanna live every minute so hard that I wear it thin
I wanna find the edge, risk it all to win
I wanna see those eyes in the mirror, burn with life again (Life again)
Yeah
I wanna be wild (Wild again), let the change begin
I wanna find the edge, risk it all, wanna burn with life again
Wanna be wild again, yeah, I wanna be wild again
Wild again...
The End
