Hi hi! Part 5 of Rising. No comments this time, I'm being brief!
Warnings: yaoi, lemon (it's finally here!), language, AU, death (sort of)
Duo hovered by Heero's locker long after the tardy bell, hoping despite the increasing unlikelihood of it that his best friend would finally come back to school.
Wufei, who, on the days he chose to attend school, rarely paid any attention to little annoyances like bells, noticed the braided teenager and sauntered over. "Hey," he said.
Duo glanced at him, then looked back at the hall door. "Hey."
"Don't tell me you're still angry?"
"About what?"
Wufei didn't bother to remind him. "What are you doing tonight?"
"Chorus."
"All night?"
"Homework, too."
"I can't believe I hang out with a preppie like you," Wufei said.
Duo frowned. "I'm not a preppie," he objected. Finally he faced Wufei, who grinned at him and jabbed him in the side. "Yeah, I know," he admitted.
Duo rubbed his rib, then ran a hand through his hair. "I guess if you want to do something, I can miss chorus," he decided. "I'm usually really good about going, but other kids take off all the time. Why shouldn't I?"
"Exactly."
Duo looked at his watch. "I should get to class."
"Why?" Wufei glanced around secretively, then pulled Duo out of the bright hallway and into the shadow of a janitor's closet. "Look," he whispered. "I got a... gift from a friend. Forget class. You're chapters ahead anyway, right? Forget all this shit and let's go relax, okay?"
"I'm supposed to meet Heero at lunch," Duo protested. "I always meet him at lunch."
"That's great. I'm impressed." The Chinese boy leaned back against the wall and shoved his hands into his pockets. "That's loyalty for you. The fucker doesn't even come to school, and you're still waiting around for him."
Duo worried a strand of chestnut hair between his teeth, his blue-violet eyes gazing unfathomably into Wufei's. "Why do you hate him so much?" he asked softly.
Chang snorted. "Yuy? I wouldn't waste that much energy on him. I'm just saying, screw him, you know? He's not here. He's going to *be* here." He reached out and put his hand on Duo's shoulder, pulling him closer. He put his cheek against the American's and when his lips brushed against Duo's ear, whispered, "I, on the other hand, am. Come on. Let's blow the nunnery and head for someplace more entertaining, kid."
Duo was blushing slightly when Wufei pulled back--that made him smile, but he hid it from his friend by turning away and heading for the door. "You with me?" he called.
Duo hesitated. He'd never skipped in his life. But he felt a strong desire to impress Wufei, and after all, Heero hadn't even bothered to come by and explain that disturbing conversation they'd had four nights ago--he hadn't even called back, and his phone was off the hook all the time now. Heero didn't care what he did. And he'd been working extra hard, lately, with a round of exams just past, and he could really use a chance to relax...
"Hey," he said. "Wait up, Wufei."
Duo was feeling good by the time they'd finished the joint between themselves in the dark and silence of the dorm's attic. He lay back, pillowing his head on the musty old curtains, and experimented with his blinking. He couldn't tell the difference between eyes open and eyes shut. It was kind of cool.
Wufei kicked his leg lightly. "Play a game?"
"Sure."
"Truth or dare."
Duo laughed; but quietly, wary enough still to remember someone might hear them. "Truth."
Wufei smiled in the dark, sure he was unseen. I'll work you up to a dare, Duo Maxwell, he thought. He had a theory. Put enough pressure on someone, and eventually they broke out of sheer self-defense. He searched his very clear mind for the most painful question possible.
"What happened the night your ma died?"
"Wu--"
"You said truth, man."
There was a short silence. Then, slowly and with difficulty, Duo began to speak.
"My pop. He was drinking. He did sometimes, on bad days, when his boss yelled at him. I don't know what they were fighting about. I had a treehouse, I went up there whenever the yelling started." A short pause. "I saw in the window to pop's bedroom. He went in and got his shotgun. Mom followed him." A longer pause. "She--she was screaming at him. Calling him names and--and provoking him. She never provoked him, he had an a-awful temper. He'd hit you real hard if you made him angry. He was screaming back, calling her a whore and a bitch and a dumb shit."
"And he shot her."
"Three times," Duo whispered. "Stomach first, then chest, then head. The blood hit the window. All over . . . "
"Then he came after you?"
Duo said nothing.
Wufei lit another joint. The match flared brightly, illuminating the darkness briefly, but he did not use his unfair advantage to look at Duo's face. When the glow was confined to a single point at the end of the smoke, he puffed twice and handed it over. He let Duo keep it. "I want a truth, too."
"Why do you even bother with school? And Quatre and Trowa and me? I've seen what you're really like. Drugs and stealing and shit."
"It's just a pastime, man." Wufei laughed, not bothering to keep his voice down. "Besides, the best way to cheat the system is to be on the inside of it. I'm not stupid."
"No," Duo said, "you're not. Truth."
"Did you ever kiss him?"
"Kiss who?"
"Yuy."
"He's a boy."
"Duo, man. I know you're gay."
He sat up. "Who told you?"
"Sometimes you just know. Did you?"
Duo flopped back onto his side, then rolled onto his stomach. "No."
"You ever try?"
"That's two questions."
He laughed again. "Dare."
"Pick truth."
"Fine. Truth."
"You're straight?"
He couldn't stop his slow smile, so it was as well the darkness hid it. "I'll only answer that if you take a dare."
The joint flared momentarily as Duo drew on it. "That's not how you play."
"So? Say yes."
"What is it you want me to do?"
"Say yes. I'll do all the work."
"Tell me... oh, fine. Yes."
Wufei rolled him over, and lay down parallel to him, but lower down, so that his head rested near Duo's thighs. Slowly, he reached out, and parted the long legs, reached between. "Let me fuck you."
"What!" Duo sat up, but unfortunately clunked his head on a low beam. With a short exclamation, he fell back to his elbows.
With clinical skill, the other boy used two long fingers to unzip his pants. "Let me blow you."
"What... "
He kissed Duo on the crotch, the heat of his breath lingering on the half-aroused flesh beneath the boxers. "At least," he whispered, sliding his hand up a denim-clad thigh, "let me jack you off."
"I--I don't--"
"I've wanted you since I first saw you. I'd dream about doing this to you. I know everything about you, and what you didn't tell me, I guessed. I know you want this too. Duo, don't say no. Don't say no."
