"Do you think he knows how dull his parties are?" Duo asked the others.
It was another party at Quatre's. As usual Duo and the former Gundam pilots were standing in their usual corner far away from the regular guests.
"Haven't we had this discussion before?" Wufei asked. He was sure they had. They had this conversation every time Quatre threw a party. "You know why we come to these things."
"Puppy eyes," Heero provided.
"It just strikes me as funny that the Puppy eyes works on you, Heero," Duo laughed. It was true. Any time one of them would try to give an excuse to get out of these parties, Quatre's eyes would get incredibly wide. The bottom lip would quiver, a hint of tears would appear in the big eyes.
"Contrary to popular belief Duo, I am human," Heero replied.
"Quatre's puppy eyes ... kryptonite to Heero!" Duo continued to chuckle.
"Is everyone having a good time?" Quatre said as he walked up to the other former pilots.
"Yes," Trowa answered.
"Good! None of you leave early. I have an announcement I want to make later."
"What kind of announcement?" Heero asked.
"You'll just have to wait," Quatre said with a big smile before leaving to mingle with the other guests.
"Maybe it's something about Winner Enterprises," Wufei offered.
"Maybe he'll promise never to throw another party?" Duo piped up hopefully.
"Anyone want anything?" Trowa asked waving his empty glass. The others shook their heads no, he shrugged and took a step outside of their protective circle to be grabbed almost immediately by Relena.
"Ohh," Duo groaned. "Poor sod never had a chance."
"Relena's not that bad," Heero said with a sigh.
"Well maybe you should go over there and talk to her then," Wufei encouraged.
"No need. I talked to her yesterday," Heero replied. A quick glance over to Trowa showed that now Une and Noin had joined Relena in talking to Trowa. "You would think he would know by now never to leave the protected circle."
Quatre and Dorothy were also part of the group delaying Trowa from getting more punch. Quatre however recognized the put upon look of Trowa and made excuses so Trowa could make an escape to the punchbowl. Quatre walked over to the rest of the guys to keep them company until Trowa returned. He understood the power of the protected circle having been part of it at other parties the former pilots were sometimes forced to attend. Minutes later Trowa joined everyone. Quatre seemed pleased and moved on.
"Excuse me, may I have your attention please?" Quatre said, while tapping a glass to get the crowd's attention. "I have an annoucement to make."
The crowd quieted down and turned to look at Quatre.
"Thank you for coming and I really wanted to tell this to as many friends as possible," Quatre's face turned a bright red while sporting a very big smile. "Dorothy Catalonia and I are getting married!"
Half the room applauded while the other half looked stunned.
"You know," Duo stuttered. "I always thought Quatre was a little ... um... light in the loafers."
"He is," Trowa replied.
"Maybe there's some business merger, we don't know about?" Wufei asked.
"Didn't she try to kill him in the past?" Heero asked.
"Yep, at least twice," Trowa supplied.
"Ah, well as long as he's happy," Duo laughed.
Quatre and Dorothy walked over to the ex-pilots.
"Quite a surprise, huh?" Quatre laughed, holding Dorothy's hand.
"You could say that," Trowa offered. "Congratulations."
"Thank you. You know Quatre was especially worried as to what you guys might think of me," Dorothy said.
"As long as Quatre is happy, what we think is not important," Wufei said.
"Thank you, Wufei," Quatre said, giving the man a brief hug. "I know you guys are ready to leave. See you soon."
"Bye," they said as they made their way out of the house.
"So how long do you think they'll stay married?" Duo asked.
"Do you think he signed a prenuptial agreement?" Wufei asked.
"Prediction? Three days and I would hope he did sign a prenup," Heero stated.
"I would say they would last at least a month and given Quatre's kind hearted nature, I would say he didn't sign a prenup," Trowa remarked.
The arguing and predictions continued to fly as they made their way to their cars to meet up later at a bar to continue the discussion.
Quatre and Dorothy waited until all the guests left before they let down their guards and laughed.
"Did you see their expressions?" Quatre chortled. "That was precious. Thank you Dorothy."
Dorothy continued to laugh. "My pleasure. I love shocking your friends and half the acquaintances at your party."
"I get so tired of folks being bored at these parties that I thought it needed a little livening up. Thank you for your suggestion. It certainly worked magic."
"Well I guess at the next party you can say the engagement is off," Dorothy smiled. "But until then can I borrow you? I would love to give my mother a bit of a shock."
"Sure," Quatre smiled, "No problem."
