Duo and Heero headed topside to leave the ship, gaining several catcalls and wolf whistles along the way. By the time they reached the deck, Heero was a shade of red that Duo had never seen before, but the dark-haired boy seemed content in spite of the teasing. The rest of the crew had assembled to make their goodbyes. Duo hugged every one of them. Heero shook hands, a couple of the crew ruffling his unruly hair fondly. Heero felt a sense of belonging like he never had before, and he liked it.
"Well, boys, I guess this is goodbye for now," Howard said as he walked with them to the ramp.
"Howard, man, thanks for everything," Duo responded, throwing his arms around the older man in a fierce hug. Heero saw Howard's face soften at the display of affection.
"Take care of him, Duo," Howard whispered as he hugged the braided boy. "He needs you just as much as you need him."
Duo pulled away, emotion shining in his violet eyes. "I know."
Howard nodded at his understanding. "I put the bike at your disposal on shore. Take good care of her, or I may have to kill you."
Duo snorted. "I think Heero is rubbing off on you, old man."
Howard grinned then turned to Heero. "Heero, you're always welcomed here. Never forget that you're part of the family now. Once a mech, always a mech... you'll never be free of us."
Heero smirked. "I'd have thought you guys would be glad to get rid of us so you could at least sleep."
Howard laughed, surprised by Heero's off-hand acknowledgement of his and Duo's new relationship. "Yeah, well, you have me there. I just think we're so glad that someone's willing to put up with Duo, we would have gone without sleep for a month."
"Hey!" Duo exclaimed, his voice full of mock indignation. "I believe I'm the one that puts up with him, and don't you forget that either."
"Baka," Heero said as he took the end of Duo's braid and rubbed it over Duo's nose.
The action made Duo melt where he stood. At that moment, Howard knew the braided pilot was lost to anyone but Heero. He had never seen Duo emotionally involved like this before, and it proved to him beyond doubt that Heero was the one. Heero turned back to Howard, and Howard saw the same look in Heero's eyes that he had seen in the warehouse... that longing for acceptance. Howard smiled as he pulled the dark haired boy into his arms.
"Bye, Howard," Heero said softly; suddenly he wished they weren't leaving the ship so soon.
"Take care of him, Heero," Howard repeated the same soft words he'd spoken to Duo. "He needs you just as much as you need him."
"No," Heero replied as he pulled away, taking in Howard's startled look before continuing, "I need him more." Heero didn't notice that Duo heard him or see the amazed look on Duo's face.
Howard did. He smiled, understanding what Heero was trying to say... and loving the other boy for it. He knew Duo was in good hands, and it made parting a little easier. "Take care, boys. See you next time."
Both of 'his boys' nodded then walked away. Howard stood there watching them head for the parking lot, his heart full and his soul at rest. He had never been prouder.
Duo and Heero reached the bike easily. Heero mounted the seat, but before he could put his helmet on, Duo stopped him. He watched as Duo straddled the bike facing him.
"Heero, listen. I know that you're already worried about how the guys are gonna react to you," Duo began, struggling to find the right words, "so maybe it's, um, not a good idea to, well, let them know about what's happened between us, at least not until they've adjusted, yanno?"
Heero frowned. "You don't want them to know that we're sleeping together."
It wasn't a question, and Duo could tell from the sound of Heero's voice that the other boy didn't understand why Duo was suggesting that they keep it a secret. Duo had to remind himself that Heero was still learning about his emotions. He probably thought Duo just didn't want them to know at all. Duo knew he needed to explain before Heero got the wrong idea.
"I don't care if the guys know, Heero, but I don't want you to be even more uncomfortable around them because of it."
"I don't care if they know either, Duo," Heero stated, his voice calm but determined. "It's our personal business, and as long as it doesn't interfere with a mission, it doesn't concern them."
Duo just stared at the blue-eyed boy in shock. When had Heero become so vehement about it? Was it because of how Howard and the others had responded? Duo didn't know, but it did make him feel good; Heero didn't want to hide their relationship. 'Hell, I feel good because we even have a relationship,' Duo thought as he smiled. Friendship alone was an amazing feat, not to mention a relationship including sex.
"I agree, Heero, but I just didn't want you to feel obligated to show me affection to keep from hurting my feelings, if you became uncomfortable," Duo explained further. He saw Heero's eyes soften as the dark-haired boy grasped what Duo was trying to say.
"Understood. Maybe we should just see what happens before we decide how to handle it further. I don't think we should exactly announce it either, but we shouldn't change how we respond to each other."
Duo grinned. "They're gonna know somethin's up anyway. We don't hafta hop up on the dining room table and give each other head for them to see that something is going on between us. Even the way we touch each other now is different than before, and definitely more than friendly."
Heero smiled, the image of him going down on Duo in front of the others making him want to laugh wickedly. Quatre would probably have a heart attack. Heero then realized that he was really beginning to feel more confident about his new relationship with Duo, as well as his new emotions. "I don't think I could keep from touching you, Duo, no matter how uncomfortable I become around them."
Duo's grin widened. "Yeah? Well, you keep tellin' me things like that, and I might get a little conceited, Yuy. Might actually think that'cha can't live without me." It was nice to know that Heero needed to touch him that much, but he really wanted to hear something like Heero had said to Howard, only he wanted Heero to say it to him this time, knowing that Duo heard him.
Heero saw the mixed emotions in those violet eyes. He slid forward on the motorcycle seat, wrapping his legs around Duo's thighs. "I can't live without you, Duo. You're my light, remember?" Before Duo could answer, Heero leaned forward and pressed his lips to the longhaired boy's mouth in a sensual kiss that took Duo's breath away.
When they pulled away, Duo was no longer hiding behind his mask of humor. The boy that Heero had come to know and love the past couple of days was staring back at him, and Heero felt his heart swell as Duo reached out and hugged him closer to him. Duo buried his face in Heero's shoulder, and Heero held onto him, letting Duo remain in his arms for as long as the other boy needed. It felt so reassuring to have Duo's body against him. When Duo finally let him go, violet eyes were suspiciously moist, but Heero didn't comment.
Duo cleared his throat. "I guess, um, we'd better get going before Quatre sends the Corp out for us."
Heero chuckled. "I don't think Rashid would appreciate finding us intertwined on this motorcycle either."
"Ya never know," Duo grinned again, his smile reaching his eyes. "He might ask to join us."
They both laughed at that as they repositioned themselves on the bike, Duo facing forward again in front with Heero holding on to him from behind. Duo started the motor, and they were soon on their way home. They could only guess what reactions awaited them upon their arrival.
"I hope Heero hasn't tried to kill Duo by now," Quatre muttered as he looked up from the book he was trying to read, his eyes falling on the form of his green-eyed partner.
Trowa sat cleaning his flute, his expression unreadable. Quatre kept trying to engage him in conversation, but Trowa just seemed so distant anymore. He had given up trying to 'feel' the other boy's emotions; he was too afraid that he'd find out Trowa didn't care for him as much as he did for Trowa, and that was something Quatre wouldn't be able to take. He knew that Trowa liked him as a friend, maybe even loved him like family, but something more than that... Quatre couldn't bring himself to even think it. He had resigned himself to 'shutting off' his ability as far as the brown-haired boy was concerned. If only Trowa would at least talk to him.
"I'm sure Heero hasn't harmed Duo, Quatre," was all the reply Quatre received.
The blonde Arabian frowned. "I know, but they should have been here over an hour ago."
Trowa sighed. "Quatre, it's possible Howard's ship was delayed, or they could be caught in traffic, or maybe they decided to stop off and eat something."
"Duo knows that I'll have dinner waiting for them, Trowa."
"You worry too much, Quatre. I'm sure they're fine."
"Trowa, you don't know how Duo has been lately. He's really on edge, and I'm just afraid that Heero is going to push him past the breaking point."
Trowa got up abruptly, the motion speaking of his upset more than his expression. "If you're so concerned about Duo, then why don't you become his partner, and let Yuy work with me." The words were spoken in calm tones, but Quatre could sense the anger behind them even without using his abilities. "No more worrying about Heero killing him, no more worrying if he's all right, no more worrying about him getting home safely. You'd be with him, so you would get to enjoy every single moment of his company instead of sitting here feeling miserable with mine."
With that said, Trowa walked out of the room, leaving a stunned Quatre sitting alone.
Trowa felt the hurt and anger grip him as he headed up the stairs to his room. He'd never spoken to Quatre like that before, and he felt guilty about it already. The blonde was just concerned about Duo because they were such good friends. Trowa knew that, but it just rubbed him the wrong way this time. Quatre had been continually making comments about Heero having to be alone with Duo during this down time. Quatre was afraid of Heero getting tired of listening to Duo, resorting to violence to quiet the longhaired boy, then Duo having to respond in like manner to defend himself. It was completely ridiculous because they both knew that Heero might ignore Duo, even threaten him, but he would never hurt the other boy. Heero respected Duo in spite of the other pilot's over-exuberance. The past few days of Quatre being so worried had made Trowa feel like the other boy didn't want to be there with him. His feelings for Quatre were strong, stronger than anything he'd ever known, and it frightened him to think that he could lose the way Quatre made him feel like he was someone special. In other words, Trowa was extremely jealous.
"You shouldn't have said those things to him, you baka," Trowa chided himself as he collapsed on his bed. He smiled slightly as he realized he'd called himself Heero's favorite name for Duo. Trowa sighed. He should go downstairs and apologize to Quatre. The blonde hadn't done anything to deserve the harsh words he'd given him. He'd made it sound like he didn't want to be Quatre's partner anymore, and it simply wasn't true. He wanted to be much more than that.
"Why can't I just tell him?" he asked himself out loud. "Why do I have to be so afraid?"
He lay in his bed, thinking about how upset Quatre had been when everyone had thought that Trowa was dead. He remembered how Quatre had come to the circus to see him before Trowa had recovered his memory. Quatre had been so happy that he'd cried at the sight of him. Then Quatre had said his name.
"Trowa?"
Trowa jerked up to see Quatre standing in the door. There was hurt and confusion in his sea colored eyes. Trowa wanted to reach out to him, but the fear was just too strong.
Quatre moved towards him, finally sitting on the bed beside him. "Do you really want to quit being my partner?"
Trowa closed his eyes. He couldn't deal with this. He felt his heart cry out 'No!' but he just couldn't speak. He felt a soft hand touch his cheek, and his eyes flew open to see Quatre gazing down at him.
"Trowa, I don't want you to be upset with me. I know I've been worried about Duo a lot the past few days, but I have a good reason. I feel more is going on with him than we know about, and Heero just wouldn't be able to handle him if Duo breaks down."
"I think Heero is exactly the person to handle it, Quatre. He would be objective."
Quatre frowned. "Sometimes a person needs to know that someone CARES about them. The odds of Heero being able to help Duo like that are ten billion to one, and we both know that."
"Heero is not immune to Duo's emotions, Quatre. Heero is more aware than you realize."
They sat there in silence, Trowa trying to find the words to apologize to Quatre for earlier, and Quatre trying to believe the words Trowa had said about Heero. Finally, Quatre decided to resume their previous discussion.
"So, did you mean what you said about not being my partner?"
Trowa shook his head. "No. I just hate to see you so upset and worried like that. I don't know what to do to make you feel better."
"Trowa, you make me feel better by just listening to me... and talking to me. I know I tend to go on sometimes, but you being here when I do makes it bearable." Quatre's eyes shone with unshed tears. "Without you, I wouldn't be able to cope with it at all."
Trowa could take a lot of things, but Quatre's tears weren't one of them; it broke him. He bolted up in the bed, hugging the other boy close to him as he began speaking. "I didn't mean the things I said, Cat. I'm sorry, I'm so sorry. I just... sometimes I feel like... I just want..."
Quatre pulled him closer, allowing himself to open up to the other boy's feelings, wanting to help him. He let himself feel the emotions pouring through Trowa. Love, fear, anger, rejection, hope, desire, and even jealousy flowed to Quatre; he then understood.
"Hey, guys, we're home!" came a loud shout from downstairs.
Trowa released Quatre reluctantly and smiled shakily. "Sounds like Heero didn't kill him."
Quatre smiled back through his tears. "I need to listen to you more often." The words held more than one meaning, but Quatre knew Trowa would take them at face value. Quatre would keep the deeper revelation safe in his heart until he could do something about it. He had found what he had been so afraid to look for in the other boy. Quatre smiled as he realized that he had no choice but to act upon it.
"Hey! Anyone here? Hello! We're back!"
Both boys upstairs laughed together for a moment.
"So, you still want to be my partner even though I worry about Duo?" Quatre asked hopefully.
Trowa smiled. "Of course, Quatre. I didn't mean that earlier. I just need your over-protectiveness too." He flushed at that admission, but felt his heart lighten when Quatre gave him a brilliant smile. He then smirked. "Just like Heero needs Duo's aggravation."
Quatre laughed again. "And Duo certainly knows how to aggravate."
Duo opened the door and yelled, "Hey, guys, we're home!"
Heero followed him in, shaking his head at his partner's antics. They had shared a brief kiss outside before dismounting the bike, but it hadn't been enough for Heero. Watching Duo walk up the steps had made him want to drag the braided pilot into the bushes before they faced their friends. Heero laughed at himself. He never would have thought his libido could be this bad. Of course, it was Duo's fault; he'd been the one to awaken it in the first place, so why shouldn't the longhaired boy be the one to have to satisfy it?
"I wonder where they are?" Duo asked as he turned back around to look at Heero. He recognized the look in Heero's eyes and felt himself harden. "Heero, man, we haven't been here for five minutes yet, and already you're tempting me."
Heero had the decency to blush. "I can't help it. The way you move just... entices me." He saw Duo's eyes light up even more at that admission.
Duo stepped closer to him, his hand resting on Heero's hip. "Everything you do entices me, so we're more than even on that count." He leaned forward and brushed his lips against Heero's, eliciting a groan from the other boy as he flicked his tongue over his bottom lip before pulling away.
"You're a damn tease, Maxwell," Heero growled, his voice even lower than usual, due to his aroused state.
Duo smiled. "No. I always deliver on my promises, Heero. You should know that by now." The longhaired boy then winked as he stepped away from him.
Heero had no choice but to smile back. "You'd better deliver on them, or I'll have to 'omae o korosu' you."
Duo laughed. He turned and shouted up the stairs. "Hey! Anyone here? Hello! We're back!" When no one replied, he turned back to Heero. "I'm hungry! I wonder where they are? Quatre always has food waiting for us when we get back."
"You and your stomach again," Heero remarked.
"Hey, I can't help it if I have a quick metabolism."
Heero smirked at him. "A quick recovery rate, too."
Duo knew exactly what Heero was referring to. "So ya noticed?"
"Hai. Several times, actually."
"Well, that was just practice, Heero. You haven't seen me in the main event yet."
Heero blinked, his face flushing at Duo's words. Duo laughed at his partner's response, moved closer to him, and then kissed him again. It lasted a little longer, both of them wanting so much more than what their lips were enjoying. Duo finally broke away when he heard footsteps above them, regret evident in his eyes. Heero smiled at him, letting him know he felt the same way.
"Guys!" came Quatre's enthusiastic voice as he descended the stairs.
"Q!" Duo bellowed as he ran towards the blonde, grabbing him in a big bear hug. "Tell me you have food for me," Duo pleaded.
Quatre laughed. "Yes. In the kitchen."
Duo released him upon hearing those words and turned to Heero. "Come on, Heero. Don't want it to get cold, do ya?"
Heero shook his head. "Heaven forbid food get cold while you're around, Duo."
Duo gave him a mock hurt look. "Heero... you know how weak I am from not getting any of Quatre's cooking while we were gone. You may need to... help me, Heero. Please..." Duo fell into Heero's arms dramatically, his eyes closed.
"I'd drop him, if I were you," Trowa said as he walked towards them.
Heero smirked at Trowa. "I can't afford to damage him. I might need him for the next mission." He looked down to see Duo open his eyes to glare at him.
"Is that all I am to you?" he asked in a feigned voice.
Heero felt his heart constrict at the words they had really spoken to each other just a couple days ago. He knew Duo was playing around for the other guys' benefit, but Heero couldn't bring himself to answer the way the others would expect. He tried something else instead. "No, and you know better, so quit being a baka. You really must be suffering from low blood sugar to ask such a ridiculous question."
Duo saw the look in Heero's eyes. He hadn't meant to bring up something like that, and immediately felt badly for doing so, but Heero's words reminded him that he'd never have to hear an uncaring reply again. He grinned up at Heero. "I wouldn't be able to make you macaroni and cheese again if you hurt me, right?"
Heero smiled and righted the other boy back onto his feet. "No, and that within itself is a good enough reason to keep you safe."
They turned their attention back to the other two boys, taking note of the shocked expressions on Trowa and Quatre's faces. Quatre was the first to get over his surprise. The emotions he was feeling from Duo and Heero were confusing and wonderful at the same time. Something had happened, and even though he didn't know what, it felt good to him.
"Macaroni and cheese?" the blonde asked with a smile.
Duo nodded happily, but Heero was the one to explain. "He makes the best damn macaroni and cheese you've ever had, Cat. Maybe we'll do dinner one night so you guys can try it. You won't be disappointed."
"Since when does Duo cook?" Trowa demanded. "And since when did you become his food critic?" His voice was light, but Heero could sense an underlying uneasiness. He'd known Trowa would be a little on edge until he understood what had happened to Heero.
"You'd be surprised," Heero countered. "And some things changed during the mission..."
"Which we can tell ya all about while we eat," Duo offered, his stomach growling at the suggestion, obvious in its agreement.
"That sounds like a good idea," Quatre replied, still trying to process the fact that Heero had called him by the nickname the others sometimes used for him. Heero had never done that before... ever.
They walked toward the dining room, Trowa and Duo a little faster than the other two. Trowa was intent on finding out the details of what had transpired while Duo and Heero had been gone. Duo just wanted to fill his rumbly tumbly. Quatre followed Heero, who seemed to be walking a little slower than usual. He extended his feelings towards the dark-haired boy and gasped. Heero apparently heard and turned to face him, but the scowl Quatre was expecting wasn't there. Heero had a vulnerable look in his eyes, and for the first time, Quatre knew he was seeing the boy he'd always known was inside that stoic exterior. He gave Heero a beautiful smile as he brushed the hair out of Heero's eyes. It was a soothing gesture, and Quatre saw Heero respond to it with a smile of his own. Knowing that Trowa and Duo were already in the other room, Quatre decided to say something.
"It's nice to finally meet you, Heero."
Heero's face took on a look of wonder and amazement. He hadn't been expecting such an understanding remark from the blonde. 'I should have,' Heero thought to himself as he gave Quatre another smile. Still, the fact that Quatre accepted him so readily gave Heero a sense of calm.
"Sorry I've been hiding for so long,' Heero replied, his voice trembling slightly. "I hope that I'm just as welcomed as the former me was. I'm sure he'll show up from time to time, but hopefully, you'll see more of me than him. At least, when Duo is around."
Quatre reached for Heero, embracing him. "You are always welcomed, Heero. No matter what happens, no matter how you change, you will always be Heero to me."
"Come on, guys," came Duo's voice from the other room.
Heero pulled away and smiled at the blonde. "You don't have to worry about me killing him anymore, Cat. Tickling him until he can't breathe, yes, but no chance of imminent death, even if I threaten it."
Quatre just looked at him and shook his head as they walked into the dining room, both of them smiling.
"So what happened?" Trowa asked, having waited until Duo was almost done eating to do so.
They were all sitting at the dining room table. Trowa had noticed that Quatre and Heero seemed to be at ease with each other, and he wondered what they had said to each other in the hall.
"Well, the mission went to hell right at the beginning," Duo explained, his voice cheerful in spite of his words. "Wrong intel, wrong maps, wrong everything. Heero was almost killed because of it."
Heero shook his head. "Not really, but that's what Duo thought when he saw me still lying on the ground after the explosion."
"Explosion?" Quatre asked, feeling uneasy at the thought of so many things going wrong at once.
"Yeah. We set the charges to blow the building, but the blueprints were wrong, so it took us longer to get out. We'd barely cleared the door when they went off, blasting us the rest of the way clear."
"The impact knocked me out, but Duo saw the blood from the gash on my head..."
"And I thought that he was dead," Duo finished the sentence, looking down at his plate to hide how upset it still made him to even remember it. He felt relieved when Heero placed a comforting hand over the one Duo had resting on the table. When he looked over at the dark-haired boy, Heero was giving him a look of understanding that made Duo want to bury himself in Heero's arms. He took a deep breath instead.
Trowa and Quatre looked at each other during the exchange. Their conversation from earlier came back to them, and they knew that they had both been wrong. They would definitely have to adjust their perceptions of Duo and Heero. Things had certainly changed.
"Needless to say, I was just unconscious. When I came to, Duo was trying to get me to wake up. I didn't realize it was him at first, and I yelled at him and shoved him away."
Duo nodded, looking up to meet the other two boys' gazes. "It upset me to think that he didn't realize just how much his death would have hurt me. I couldn't help but think that he wouldn't have even cared if the roles had been reversed."
"All I could see was that Duo was just sitting there when we needed to be moving. I yelled at him again, and finally just grabbed his arm to get him to snap out of it. I knew something was terribly wrong by the time we made it to the safe house." Heero looked over at Duo, remembering the listlessness of his eyes. He shuddered and vowed once more that he'd never let the light he saw there now fade again.
Duo turned to look at Heero beside him. "I was pissed. I get that way when someone hurts my feelings," he admitted, wanting Heero to really understand that part. "Heero kept asking me if I was hurt physically, even tried to help me get ready for bed because he was so concerned for me. That's when I let him have it." Duo grinned in spite of himself.
Heero actually laughed. It startled Trowa and Quatre since they'd never heard true mirth from him before. "He lay into me. Shinigami was flaming in his violet eyes, and let me tell you," Heero paused to look at the other two pilots, "You never want that look to fall on you. He told me to 'leave him the fuck alone'. I could see that I had no choice."
"So what happened?" Trowa prompted, still finding it hard to believe that Duo had been so angry.
Duo looked at Heero. He knew the other boy wouldn't tell about his nightmares, but how were they going to explain what happened next? He felt a sense of calm as Heero looked back at him and smiled encouragingly. Duo knew that Heero would not betray his trust; Heero apparently had an idea.
"The next day, we talked about it," Heero replied evenly. "I asked Duo why he had been so angry with me, and he told me. I was shocked as hell to think that he actually thought I didn't care about him, at least as a partner, but even more so as a friend. It made me realize what a cold-hearted bastard I've been, not only to him, but also to the rest of you. You are all my friends, and I've never told you that I'm yours. I am."
Trowa nodded. "We know you are, Heero. It's hard to be a soldier and keep strong ties at the same time."
"But we have to depend on each other to be there for one another," Quatre added, feeling his heart swell at Heero's admission to being their friend. "It's dangerous, but it's a risk worth taking."
"I know that now," Heero said with a smile. "It's not going to be easy, but Duo said he would help me."
Heero turned to give Duo a meaningful look. Duo smiled. Heero had passed over what had happened during the night and yet managed to tell the truth about what had happened the next day. Leave it to Heero to be able to do it. "Of course, I'm going to help you. Who else could get past that cold icy wall you've built up around your heart? I am the best infiltrator there is, and don't you forget it." Duo winked at him, drawing another smile.
"We'll help in any way we can too, Heero," Quatre offered. He looked over at Trowa, trying to gauge the other boy's reaction. Trowa studied the other two pilots for a moment before nodding his head.
"It'll take some getting used to," he began cautiously, "but I'm sure we'll manage. Besides, Quatre won't have to be so worried that you'll kill Duo now."
Duo laughed. "Q! You were worried about me? Aw, man. You're the little brother I never had."
"Duo, he's the same age as you are," Heero reminded the braided boy, his voice warm with emotion.
They all sat there in amiable silence until Duo and Heero locked gazes. Duo felt himself flush from the intensity of the other boy's eyes. It was getting late, and what he was about to do was going to piss his new lover off immensely, but he forged ahead, trying to take courage from the fact that it was for a good reason. He would just have to deal with Heero upstairs.
"Well, on that note, I think I'll hit he sack. My room still available, Q?"
Quatre gave him a puzzled look. "Well, yeah, Duo, of course. No one would take your room."
Duo looked at Heero to see him frowning. "Good! I really need to get some sleep. It'll be good to be in my own bed tonight." Duo turned to walk towards the stairs. "Goodnight everyone."
Trowa noticed the look on Heero's face. "Heero? Is something wrong?"
Heero got up, pushing his chair in. "No. I'm a little tired too. See you both in the morning." With that Heero made his way upstairs for the night. Quatre and Trowa gave each other a look.
"What was that all about?" Quatre asked as he studied Trowa's intense frown.
"I don't know, but I have a feeling there's still more going on here than we know about."
Duo heard Heero go to his room and all but slam the door. Wincing, he tentatively made his way across the hall and knocked. When there was no answer from within, he sighed heavily and entered anyway. Heero was sitting on his bed, anger and hurt evident on his face. Duo took a deep breath.
"I want to see if I can face the nightmares alone, Heero. It's important for me to find out if I can."
Heero glared at him. "No. You just don't want them to know about us. Are you that ashamed of me?"
Duo felt himself getting angry. Heero was being stupid, and as much as he cared about him, this was not the time for Heero to be getting all possessive over him. "Heero, just because we're involved doesn't mean that we have to share the same bed every night."
Heero felt his heart break. He'd thought that Duo wanted him to be in his bed. He'd thought that Duo wanted him. Apparently, he had been wrong. "Sorry. I guess I didn't catch that rule. I was too busy letting you have your way with me to see that that this was just a game to you."
Duo felt like he'd been slapped. "You, bastard! Don't you dare act like I took advantage of you. You know that's a damn lie! Everything we did was consensual, and you wanted it as much as I did."
"Wanted what? What did we have, Duo? It sure as hell wasn't love, was it? You don't seem to know the meaning of the word, let alone be able to actually feel it. All you know about is sex, and I have to admit, you're damn good at it." Heero wanted to scream. He didn't want this. He was hurting Duo, but he couldn't stop. He was so hurt and confused as to why Duo didn't want him with him tonight.
"Oh, so you've opened up to your feelings, and now you think that you know all about it, huh? Well, fuck you, Heero! You don't know a damn thing about it! You will never be able to love! Never!"
Duo turned and stormed out of the room, slamming the door behind him. Heero sat on the bed trembling. It wasn't long before he collapsed, silent tears rolling down his cheeks, as he lay miserably alone.
Duo leaned against his own door in the hallway. His tears flowed hotly down his face. He'd never felt so hurt and used. Heero didn't really care about him. 'I knew it was too good to be true. I knew that he couldn't love me. Why did I ever let myself love him? It's too late. It's too fucking late.' Duo opened his door and went inside. It was going to be a long night.
