Beauty Of A Dream by babaca

A lone Chinese man in his twenties stood on a high cliff looking out over the horizon. His mind thought of all his unfulfilled dreams. As he looked over the beautiful area below, his thoughts filled with the images of flying. 'I could just step off this ledge and let the wind carry me,' he thought as he spread his arms out and begin to step off the edge.

Suddenly he felt a hand grab his arm and pull him back. He turned to stare into green eyes the shade of deepest emerald.

"What are you doing?" the quiet voice of a man around his age asked, never releasing the arm. It wasn't a painful grip. It was quite reassuring actually.

The Chinese man wasn't angry, although he wasn't sure why that was. "I wish to soar with the eagles," he said.

"I wish you wouldn't do that," the taller man said.

"Why not?" the Chinese man asked.

"I wish for you to soar with me," came the reply.

The sound of the alarm cutting into his subconscious, caused Chang Wufei to groan. A lean arm reached out to turn off the annoyance before he sat up and said aloud, "DAMMIT!" His proclamation of damnation frightened, Nataku his Siamese cat. He saw the cat scurry off the bed and he laughed. "Some fierce warrior you are!" He struggled to get out of bed and ready to go to classes.

While brushing his teeth with his eyes still closed, he decided to ponder on the last remnants of his dream before it slipped completely out of his mind. 'Who was that man? Why did he stop me from flying?' He had had this dream many times in the past. He stepped off the edge of the cliff and he would fly over the beautiful plains below. He never sprouted wings or anything like that but the winds would support his body and carry him wherever he wanted to go. But this time was different. He had never had anyone else appear in his flying dream before. The guy in his dream was beautiful. 'What did he say before I woke up? Damn, I wish I could remember.'

Trowa's eyes opened the minute the man with the pony tail vanished from him in the dream. He tried closing his eyes to recapture the dream but to no avail. 'Who was he? I've never seen him before, but something about him drew me to him.' He attempted to turn over before realizing he was trapped against the wall. He bumped his hip none too gently into his sleeping companion.

A muffled groan was what he got in response.

"Move over, Dorothy."

One blue eye popped open to stare at her companion. "Mmm?"

Trowa sighed. "I need to go to the bathroom. Move over. You're a bed hog, you know that right?"

"Just shove me out of the way then," she murmured, her eyes closing again.

"What do you think I'm trying to doing?" he asked as he looked over at the clock. It was 8:00 a.m. "Damn, and I'm late again. I thought you set the alarm," he said as he rushed out of the bed heading for the bathroom.

"I don't have a job to go to, you should set your own alarm," she said as she turned over to go back to sleep. "My class isn't until 11, I don't need an alarm."

Trowa harumphed at her as he quickly brushed his teeth and splashed water on his face. He wasn't sure why he and Dorothy were together. Well, they weren't exactly together. He liked men, she liked women. But since her parents who were very wealthy didn't approve of that lifestyle, she decided she needed a boyfriend. She met Trowa when he was a senior in college. They became good friends and she began introducing him to her parents as her boyfriend. They approved. To the world, except for their closest friends who knew the truth, they looked like the perfect couple. When Trowa graduated and found an apartment off campus, Dorothy would often visit, but over time, she gradually moved in. Trowa couldn't figure out why Dorothy insisted on sharing his bed, but he came to the conclusion that she didn't like sleeping alone.

'She's alone because she's a bed hog,' Trowa snickered to himself. 'What idiot would put up with a tiny corner of the bed while she spreads out like an octopus? Well, me I guess.'

The musings of his bedmate caused him to forget about the dream he had mere minutes ago. He was quickly getting dressed to head to work. He knew he would have a difficult time explaining his absence. His supervisor, Heero Yuy, didn't like excuses.

Chang Wufei stood on the edge of a cliff looking out over the horizon. Arms spread, he prepared to take his flight over the plains below. Again he is stopped by the tall, green-eyed man, he saw before.

"Who are you?" Wufei asked curiously. "Why do you constantly stop my flight?"

"Who are you?" the tall man asked. "Why do you have the need to fly?"

"I'm Chang Wufei," the Chinese man smiled. "Flying gives me pleasure."

"Chang Wufei," the tall man repeated as if committing it to memory. "How do you know you won't be killed?"

"I've never been killed before. The wind supports me. Have you never flown?" Wufei asked.

"To be honest Chang ..."

"Wufei, please," Wufei interrupted.

"To be honest, Wufei, I've never tried," the tall man shrugged.

"It's wonderful, you should try it."

The tall man stood closer to Wufei, their bodies nearly touching but not quite. Deep green eyes burned into onyx ones and as he whispered, "Could we try it together?" He leaned down to kiss the amazingly fearless man, when the alarm sounded.

"FUCK!" Trowa screamed as he reached over Dorothy to turn off the alarm.

"Fuck? Maybe later," murmured his sleeping companion.

"Chang Wufei, Chang Wufei," Trowa muttered to himself and he got up to look for a pencil and paper. Having found them, he wrote the words, 'Chang Wufei'. Put the paper down on the table then went to the bathroom to get ready for work.

Wufei began to lean forward to accept the kiss when the man disappeared. Wufei's eyes opened and he was thoroughly in a bad mood. 'Talk about your teases!' He glanced over at the clock and realized he still had an hour before he needed to be up. 'Who is he? Why wouldn't he tell me his name?'

Trowa sat at work busily writing the program his supervisor wanted him to write. It was a simple program really, but his mind kept wandering back to his dream of the beautiful Chang Wufei. 'Why are you in my dreams?' He tried to think back to see if he knew anyone who even mildly reminded him of the young man. 'Aren't dreams suppose to represent something. People in dreams are never really the people in dreams, wasn't that what Freud said. Or was it Jung?'

Heero Yuy stepped over to the daydreaming man's cubicle. "Do you have that program ready for me, Barton?"

Trowa jumped and looked up guiltily into steely dark blue eyes. "Not exactly. It will be ready by lunchtime."

The Japanese man glared at him. "It had better be. Get back to work!" Then he stormed off.

Trowa winced. "Chang Wufei, I need to put you on the back burner until I finish this," he said quietly to himself as he went back to writing code in earnest.

This dream was different. Instead of being in the great outdoors, they were inside a room. The tall man claimed Wufei's lips in quiet desperation.

"I don't want you to vanish this time," he said huskily against his lips.

Wufei sighed and returned the kiss just as ferociously. "Don't you go anywhere either. You disappear and I swear I will kill you."

The tall man quickly stripped the smaller man of his clothing, kissing every inch of exposed skin he saw. Wufei moaned desperately trying to divest his eager lover of his clothing also. The tall man would stop to take off some of his clothes. A green turtleneck that matched his eyes. The snug jeans that were so tight that getting out of them looked painful to Wufei. Both completely naked, they captured each other's lips as their hands roamed over smooth muscular bodies.

A table appeared out of no where and the tall man turned Wufei so he faced the table. Hot kisses along his neck and spine made Wufei lie across the table for support, his erection trapped against the hard unforgiving surface. With legs parted, Wufei moaned and grabbed the edge of the table as he could feel the tall, green-eyed man slide into him, brushing past his pleasure spot. Wufei waited for the man to continue but he wouldn't move. Wufei became restless, shameless and decided to beg. "Please?"

With that small plea, the taller man moved in him, slow and steady. Both were drowning in sensation. The deathgrip Wufei had on the table tightened with each push of the other man inside him. A rhythm was building and Wufei's trapped arousal was killing him. Suddenly the taller man pulled out and Wufei whimpered.

The tall man turned Wufei to face him and gently lifted the Chinese man on the table to slid back into the willing body. Wufei's legs wrapped around the tall man and willed the man to go deeper. "More," Wufei whispered.

The tall man complied, driving into the smaller man with reckless abandon, his hand wrapped around Wufei's dripping cock, stroking him to the faster rhythm. "Wufei," gasped the taller man, "Need you to come. I want to feel you come."

The pleading words urged Wufei on to completion, just as much as being stroked both inside and out had been. With a shout, his seed spilled over the tall man's hand and their bodies. The tall man soon followed releasing deep inside the sensual man.

They lay panting for a second, before Wufei chuckled. "You know I still don't know your name."

The green eyed man with the impossibly long bangs smiled. "It's Trowa."

"Trowa," Wufei said as his eyes opened. Then he quickly looked about his room, ignoring the sticky mess inside his boxers. Wufei was surprised at how real his dream felt. He could swear he had been really penetrated. He had never had such a vivid dream before.

Trowa awoke thankful that Dorothy chose to spend the night with her girlfriend. He decided as he headed to the shower that he would have to discover if this Chang Wufei was really real.

He spent much of the morning on his laptop trying to do a search for Chang Wufei. Considering the man's last name was Chang slightly discouraged him. A knock on the door, brought the tall man out of his thoughts.

Duo Maxwell, his best friend decided to stop by. He hadn't seen much of his friend and he was a little worried. "Hello stranger. Where have you been? Has that bastard Yuy been working you too hard?" he asked cheerfully. He had heard all the horror tales of Slavemaster Yuy from his friend.

"If I told you what was happening, you'd think I was crazy," Trowa said as he lead his friend into his apartment. He stopped by the kitchen and pulled out a couple of beers, handing one over to Duo.

"I've always thought you were crazy. What's going on?" Duo asked.

"I'm chasing a ghost," Trowa said, sitting back at the table where his laptop sat.

"A ghost from the past? A ghost like the CIA definition of ghost? What?" Duo asked now curious.

"I keep having this recurring dream of a man on a cliff. He's incredible. I want to know this man," Trowa said, knowing it sounded silly even to himself.

"Do you know this person?" Duo asked.

"No. He only appears in my dreams. All I have to go on is a name. Chang Wufei," he shrugged.

Duo stared at him dumbfounded for a second. "You're trying to find someone you've only dreamed about?"

Trowa nodded.

"Nah, that's not crazy at all," Duo said, laughing. When he noticed that Trowa didn't join him in the laughter, he stopped. "You're serious, aren't you?"

Trowa began typing in his laptop. "How many folks can there be in the world called Chang Wufei?"

Duo continued to stare at his friend like he had seriously lost his mind. "You're trying to look for him? For real?"

Trowa nodded and continued his search. "I know it's silly, but I think I'm in love."

"With a dream character," Duo reminded him.

"What if he isn't just a dream? What if he's real?" Trowa asked.

"Okay, say he is real. What are you going to do? Go up to a complete stranger and say, 'Hi, I've been dreaming about you'," Duo queried.

"I know it sounds silly, but I feel I have to do this," Trowa said.

"What about Dorothy?" Duo asked.

"What about her?" Trowa said. "I don't think this would upset her none. It's not like we're a couple or anything."

Duo laughed, "True. You two play your roles so well, it's easy to forget." He walked over to where his friend was sitting. "Okay, what can you tell me about your dream. You say you see him on a cliff. A cliff where? Apparently not around here. This town is pretty flat."

Trowa smiled, grateful that his friend wanted to help. "I don't know. The area generally reminds me of pictures you'd see in the West. Someplace like New Mexico, or Colorado."

Duo asked, "Have you triangulated your search to that area then?" He was now getting in the spirit of ferreting out information. Of course, he thought his friend would be crazy to go pursue someone he only knew in a dream, but helping on the hunt was fun.

"No, but I will now," Trowa said and he typed frantically. "I've found three Chang Wufeis and one Chang Wufan." [1] He took a piece of paper and began writing down address information.

"Are you going to call them? Or just show up?" Duo asked.

"I'd rather see them face to face. Then I'd know," Trowa said.

"What if none of these guys are your dreamboat?" Duo asked. He wanted his friend to be happy but he also wanted to make sure Trowa realized that this dream love may just be that--a dream.

"Then I'll have to give him up both in my dreams and reality, I guess," Trowa said softly. "I have plenty of overtime and vacation time accrued, so why don't I go take a little vacation, next week."

"Do you want me to come with you?" Duo asked.

"No, I'll be fine."

"Let me know what happens, good or bad. Okay?" Duo said concerned.

"I will."

Wufei was having a tough time concentration on his CPA board exam. 'Pay attention, Chang! You know this stuff. Worry about that other stuff later.' He tried willing his blush away and looked down at his test to read the same question over again for the fourth time. 'If you blow this test, Mom and Dad will never forgive you.' The thought of his stern parents brought him back to reality and he worked on the test. He barely finished it before time was up, but he left the test confident that he passed it.

"So how many times does this make for you?" A tall woman with light brown hair and blue eyes asked.

"My first," Wufei said.

"Ah, this makes my third time. Third time is the charm, at least that's what they say," the woman smiled at him. "My name is Sally Po. I couldn't help but noticed you looked distracted during the test."

"Chang Wufei," Wufei said. "I was a little distracted, then I remembered how much I paid to take this test and what my folks would do if I blew it."

Sally laughed. "I hope you pass then. Would you like to go for some coffee? We can compare notes."

Wufei smiled. "Sure, why not."

By the time Trowa got off the plane in Taos, he had his methodology of seeking out Chang Wufei perfected. Actually the first two were easy to discount. The first Wufei was an elderly man who lived in a rest home. Trowa thought about abandoning the interview, but he decided to ask if he had any children or grandchildren who were also called Wufei. There wasn't.

The interview with the second Chang Wufei never took place. When someone pointed out the twelve year old boy, he knew instantly this wasn't the one either.

The Wufei here in New Mexico was the last "Wufei". It only left "Wufan" which he sure was probably not right either. 'Maybe Duo was right, maybe I'm just wasting my time,' he thought as he quietly rode in the cab that took him to the address, he found in the phone book once he got off the plane.

He quickly paid the driver and walked into the apartment complex. A quick glance at the mailboxes told him that Chang was in 301. He sought out the correct apartment and taking a deep breath, he knocked.

There was no answer.

'Great!' Trowa sighed. 'What do I do now? Hang out by the door, like some kind of freak?' He remembered seeing a coffee shop a block away from the complex. 'Maybe I'll go get some coffee.'

As Trowa made his way down the narrow, dark stairwell, he bumped into a person heading up the stairs.

"Sorry," Trowa said automatically, his mind elsewhere.

"It's okay, I should have waited for you to pass," a voice said, as he continued his ascent.

Trowa stopped. 'That voice,' he thought. "Wufei?"

The Chinese man stopped his ascent on the stairs as well. He turned in the direction of the voice that sounded vaguely familiar. "Yes, do I know you?" he asked.

Trowa changed directions and walked up the stairs closer to the Chinese boy. By the time Trowa reached the step nearest the man. He was no longer obscured by shadows in the dark stairwell. Trowa stared into startled onyx eyes and said, "I certainly hope so."

Wufei stared back in amazement. 'Those bangs, those eyes.' "Trowa?" he asked hesitant and slightly afraid.

Trowa smiled. "Yes, I'm Trowa. Trowa Barton," he said as he extended his hand to the man. He wanted to take him in his arms, but thought a handshake would be best.

Wufei stared, his face bright red and he took the taller man's hand in his own. He held it for a moment before he returned the handshake. "Chang Wufei."

Both men continued to stare at each other in amazement that each was real. Chang didn't release his hand, afraid if he let go, the man would vanish like he had so many times in so many dreams.

Trowa smiled. "I know. Can I come in?"

Wufei laughed and reluctantly let go of his hand. "Sure, as long as you promise not to vanish on me."

Trowa followed the Chinese man up the stairs to his apartment. "I promise. No vanishing."

As the two men entered Wufei's small apartment, Wufei apologized. "I'm sorry this place is so small, but I only got it for the view." Trowa looked at him quizzically until he followed the man out on the balcony. He gasped.

The view was the same as in his dreams, where he first met Wufei. "You know ..."

Wufei glanced over to him and smiled. "I know."

"When I first saw you on the cliff, I was sure you were going to jump," Trowa said.

"Have you never dreamed of flying?" Wufei asked, much like he asked him in their shared dream.

"Never have," Trowa said.

"Maybe tonight you will dream of flying then," Wufei said with a smile.

Trowa walked over and stood close to Wufei, their bodies almost touching. "I hope so," he said as he leaned down to kiss the shorter man.

Wufei leaned and accepted the kiss. A kiss that was real. No alarm clocks, no disappearing acts. Wufei wrapped his arms around Trowa's neck pulling him closer, deepening the kiss. Common sense kept screaming at him, this was a total stranger, this was not the man in your dreams, but the sensations were the same and he told his brain to shut up.

Wufei pulled back and stared into those deep green eyes that stared back in wonderment and desire."You know this is crazy, don't you?"

Trowa nodded. "I know, but I don't care," he said as he recaptured the lips of the man he lost his heart and soul to months ago in the land of dreams.

Wufei murmured huskily against Trowa's lips. "I don't care either."

Trowa and Wufei stood on a cliff together, hand in hand.

"Are you ready, Trowa?" Wufei asked.

"Yes, love, I think I am," Trowa said.

"Don't think, Trowa. Know," Wufei said as they inched closer to the edge.

Trowa nodded understanding. "I knew I wanted to soar with you the moment I met you. Yes, I am ready."

Wufei kissed Trowa briefly. "Just hold my hand and enjoy the ride."

They jumped together and let the wind carry them over the hills and plains.

Trowa snuggled closer to Wufei as they both slept with big smiles on both their faces.
