Heero looked at Duo and smiled slightly; the other boy seemed to be in shock. "Aren't you going to ask me in? I know it's been a while, but I figure you still know who I am, right?"
Duo shook himself then mustered up one of his grins. "Well, of course, Heero. How could I not know who you are? Come on in."
Duo turned and walked on into the living room. His mind was going a mile a minute. 'Shit, shit, shit! He's here. Heero is here, and I don't know what the hell I'm supposed to say to him.'
"Nice place," Heero remarked casually as he watched Duo's ass. The boy had on a pair of khaki pants that accentuated just how perfect that ass really was. Heero could feel himself harden just thinking about it. He had to force himself to drag his eyes up, taking in the tight t-shirt that showed off Duo's back and shoulders. Duo's captivating hair was in its normal braid, but Heero felt a sense of satisfaction as he recalled how it had looked when it was down. 'I'm going to bury my hands in that hair, Duo, as soon as I can.'
"Thanks. I like it," Duo replied, still trying to calm down his rapidly beating heart. Heero looked so good. He was wearing a dark blue t-shirt and light blue jeans that fit him perfectly. Duo felt light-headed just seeing him like this. Heero's teasing attitude was kind of unnerving as well. Duo knew he had to get a grip before he did something stupid. "So, what'cha doing here?"
"I wanted to give you this."
Duo looked at the proffered gift... a book. He took it and realized that it wasn't one of the books he had. "Is this new?" he asked in an excited voice.
Heero smiled. "Yes. It won't be out for a few more days, so I thought I'd give you one of the first copies. I signed it for you too." He felt a little embarrassed at saying that; he didn't want to seem full of himself.
"Sugoi! Heero, this is great! I already have the other two. Will you sign those too?" Duo was so happy. Heero had brought it to him personally!
"If you want me to," Heero replied, feeling his face flush a little. He suddenly found himself being hugged profusely by the object of his affection. He was so taken off guard that he didn't get a chance to return the hug before Duo pulled away.
Duo had reacted on impulse, but quickly realized what he was doing. 'Calm down, Maxwell,' he chided himself. ' A friend would have done the same thing. You're not picking out wallpaper together yet.' Before he could give Heero a chance to hug, or not hug, him back, he pulled away. They stared at each other for a moment before Duo nervously motioned for them to sit down on the couch. He eagerly opened the front cover to read the inscription written by Heero's own hand.
'To Duo Maxwell, My Best Friend,'
"Best friend, huh? Well that's satisfying to hear."
Heero smirked at him. "I was counting on that right from the start." They shared a smile at the good memory before Duo continued reading. The next couple of lines took his breath away.
'You mean more to me than anyone I've ever known. You are my inspiration when I feel like I have nothing left to give, my passion when I feel like giving up, and my hope when this world has given up on me; I know you'll always be there for me when I need you.'
Duo was speechless. Hope grew within him, until he read the last line.
'Only you can give me what I need to fly on 'Broken Wings'. Heero Yuy'
'Broken Wings' stood out like a virgin in the red light district. The first thing that came to Duo's mind was the fact that Heero had seen his doujinshi. 'But... he didn't mention the letter. Is he just reacting to the story he read?' Duo wanted Heero to be there because of the letter, not because of the erotic drawings he had done of them together. 'Damn! This isn't how this was supposed to be. What if he hasn't read the letter?' He forced himself to look up and meet Heero's gaze; it was steady but held something in it Duo didn't recognize. Duo didn't know what it all meant. One thing he did know was that if Heero hadn't accepted his love, then nothing else mattered. 'Oh shit! I am in so deep here...'
The vidphone came to life, rescuing Duo from commenting. He almost ran to answer it in his studio.
"Yo!" Duo said as he punched the line open, his breath uneven as he fought to keep from hyperventilating. He knew he was over-reacting, but his mind wouldn't focus rationally.
"D? What's wrong? You okay, man?"
"Yeah, K. Sorry, but you kinda interrupted somethin'." Duo's voice calmed slightly. 'Yeah, you probably just saved me from saying something I would have regretted, Kyle. Man, I owe you,' he added silently to himself, wanting to cry. He could feel his dream slip away even as he stood there. Heero would never want a real relationship with him. Duo had ruined a chance at love with his over-developed sex drive.
"D, jacking off should NOT be an occupation," Kyle snorted. "Besides, you need to get out again tonight. That guy may come back, and as much as you enjoyed his groove, you owe it to yourself to..."
"Kyle," Duo interrupted. "It was just a dance, that's all." Duo remembered that Heero had excellent hearing; of course, Heero was going to reject him once Duo told him he didn't just want to have sex, so what did it matter if he knew Duo had danced with some guy in a club?
"Yeah, right. You were practically melting against him. 'I Wanna Touch U' was more than a song last night, D. I seriously thought you were going to break your rule of no frontal contact.'
Duo would have to teach Kyle the art of subtlety later. "K, an old friend of mine has dropped by."
"Oh, I'm sorry. Didn't mean to... well... can't he or she come too?"
"Where are you going?" came Heero's voice from the doorway, startling Duo. Heero had been listening from the couch. When he'd heard about Duo's reaction to the dance, he'd been pleased. 'So I did get to him!' It made Heero feel good to know that Duo was attracted to him even when he didn't know that it had been him. Heero had decided to get in on this little conversation.
"Oh, hey there, 'old friend'," Kyle replied, not surprised that Duo's company was male. Although Kyle couldn't see him, he knew the guy had to be hot just from hearing his voice; it was sexy as hell. He smirked at Duo as he addressed the other male. "The Shaker. Do you know it?"
"Pretty hip club. I hear the music is great." Heero noticed Duo's jaw drop and almost started laughing. 'There's so much you don't know yet, Duo. Just wait, the night is young,' he thought to himself calmly.
Duo couldn't believe that Heero actually wanted to go to a club. This might be the last time he would be able to enjoy the other boy's company. Once Duo told him that he wouldn't just sleep with him, Duo knew Heero would leave; he would lose his best friend in the process of denying a lover. 'No,' Duo thought bitterly, 'Not a lover... just a sexual partner.' He decided he owed himself one last night of being Heero's friend. Maybe they would even have a good time. It was a bittersweet thought.
"Well... I guess we could for a while..."
Heero didn't miss the tone in Duo's voice. It made him uncomfortable. What was Duo thinking? Had his dedication been too much? Or wasn't it enough? He didn't understand Duo's reaction at all. Although Heero had planned on staying in, he immediately began a new plan... one involving seduction on the dance floor. "Sounds good. I'd love to meet your friends," he said, gaining another incredulous look from his braided target.
"Cool!" Kyle yelled with glee. "See you at the club around nine, guys. Later."
The screen went blank. Duo just stood there for a moment, trying to comprehend why Heero would want to go out, but glad that he would get to spend some time with him. He didn't know if he was strong enough to pick up the broken pieces of his heart later, but for right now, he would try to enjoy himself. He was surprised to see confusion in those cobalt blue eyes when he turned around.
Heero had thought he could read Duo so well, but he was totally unprepared for how Duo was behaving. He didn't know why Duo was being so distant. 'Maybe he thinks I'm angry,' Heero thought suddenly.
"Duo, I'm not upset about the doujinshi. In fact, I'm rather flattered. The drawing is exceptional."
Duo didn't know how to take the compliment. 'I need to know that he read the letter. Why isn't he saying anything about it? The doujinshi isn't enough.' Duo was completely miserable. He had decided long ago that Heero would have to be the one to confess his love if he ever showed up at his door. Duo refused to bring up the letter. That was the end of it. If Heero didn't tell him that he'd read it, it would be as if the letter never happened; they would only be friends, no matter what else Heero said to him.
"Thanks," he replied hesitantly. "I'm glad you think so."
Heero nodded, unsure of what else to say. "Do Quatre and Trowa know about it? I'm just curious. I won't say anything if they don't."
Duo snorted. "Know about it? Hell, it was partially their idea. When they found out what I was doing, they all but jumped at the story involving all of us. They've gone as far as to help me with the storyline in some of them. Even Wufei thinks it's good."
That surprised Heero. "Wufei liked it? I thought he'd be livid because you used him in it."
"He gets to approve any scenes involving him before I submit them," Duo explained, a smile on his face as he thought about Wufei's reactions to some of the scenes between Dey and Rayne.
"Well, I have to admit that I was upset at first, but after reading the whole series so far, I have to say that the storyline is really good. It has more fact in it than fiction, ne?" Heero noticed Duo's uncertain look at his last comment and decided to let the other boy take it however he wished; Heero wasn't going to elaborate. Something wasn't right, and Heero felt dread settle in the pit of his stomach; Duo was hiding.
Duo wondered if the fact that Heero had accepted the relationship in the doujinshi was enough to make Heero know what Duo wanted, but he was just too afraid to trust that. The doujinshi was well written, with a lot of emotion between the two characters, but that really wasn't the point. The point was that if Heero had accepted his love then he would have read the letter. If Heero hadn't read the letter, then there would be no physical relationship; Duo would not just have sex with Heero. His heart needed more than that. He would wait until it would be making love, or nothing at all. He took a deep breath to harden his resolve further.
"Well, I guess I'd better haul ass to the shower. By the time I get my hair done, it will be time to go."
Heero smirked. "Especially if you still primp in front of the mirror like you used to."
Duo feigned a hurt look, trying to embrace the mask he'd worn so easily only a few months ago. "I do not primp, Heero. I attempt to ascertain if my appearance is acceptable."
"Yes, I do believe that the word 'ass-certain' would be correct in that situation."
Duo shook his head, knowing that Heero was teasing now. He smiled in spite of himself, but it never touched his eyes. "I'm not even going there, Yuy. Go make yourself at home 'til I get out."
Heero smiled, but suddenly felt out of his element. He watched as Duo stalked to the bathroom, and wondered what had happened. 'He told me he would always be what I need. I have to believe in that. No matter how he's acting right now, I know he loves me. I just need to figure out what to do.' With that thought, he decided to look around Duo's studio.
Duo leaned under the showerhead. 'This is definitely going to be difficult,' he thought as he tried to banish the vision of Heero joining him under the spray. The other boy had been there for less than an hour, and Duo already had a raging hard-on and couldn't think straight. No matter how much he told his body that he had to wait for Heero's love, his body seemed to have other ideas. Duo looked down at his arousal and sighed heavily. There was only one thing to do to take care of his problem. He didn't want to end up doing something he would regret because he was so revved up that he couldn't stop himself.
Duo reached down, gripped his aching erection, and began pumping. It felt so incredible; just knowing that Heero was in the other room turned the violet-eyed boy on even more. Duo could see Heero in those tight jeans and shirt as he closed his eyes. He then pictured Heero taking those clothes off, slowly, telling Duo how much he wanting and needed him while Duo watched.
Duo's strokes became firmer as Heero stripped for him in his mind. He had his mental Heero naked in mere seconds. When he thought about Heero reaching down to touch his self, Duo touched the satiny underside of his sac with his other hand as he continued to stroke his length, his fingers rubbing over his head to collect the moisture on his tip. He was so close now. The last image he had was of Heero with his head thrown back in ecstasy as he came, screaming out his love for him, that incredible body rigid with pleasure. Duo felt his climax hit him and stifled the scream that tried to escape from his lips. He shuddered for quite awhile, in the grips of ecstasy himself. When it was over, he looked down at his self and began to chuckle to keep from crying.
"Good thing I'm in the shower already."
Heero stood transfixed. Cobalt blue eyes stared back at him screaming silently, 'This is your soul'. Heero was completely stunned. No one else could have captured him like Duo had. Heero quickly flipped back through the other sheets of paper, taking in each drawing, associating many of them with one of his own poems, then turned back to the first one, the one that had taken his breath away the moment he'd seen it. He couldn't seem to escape that stare. It made him understand himself more than he ever had. He almost didn't hear Duo enter the room... almost.
"This was inspired by 'Lonely', wasn't it?" he asked quietly, not willing to turn away from those eyes yet.
Duo hadn't expected Heero to go looking for his artwork. He felt a little annoyed at the fact that the other boy hadn't asked first, but then quickly reminded himself that this was Heero, and the damn drawing was of him to begin with. Duo walked on over to Heero to stand beside him.
"How could you tell?"
Heero turned to look at his friend. Duo was wearing a pair of dark blue jeans and a violet button-down shirt. His hair was flowing around him. He looked amazing. Heero had to smile. "Because you captured on this canvas exactly how I was feeling when I wrote it, Duo. It's like looking at myself from the outside. It's incredible."
Duo smiled, noticing Heero's reaction to his outfit, but also elated that Heero thought that he understood him. "My eyes cry out a silent plea, Complete me, complete me... how does the first part go?" Duo knew, but he wanted to hear Heero say it. Heero closed his eyes as he recited the poem that had unlocked so many emotions inside him.
"Spoken from my trembling lips,
Hear me, hear me
Outstretched palms and fingertips,
Release me, release me
I await your embrace of forgiveness
Gripped in the fear of self discovery
Only you have the strength to free me
From this prison I alone have created
Eyes of violet call to me
Claim me, claim me
Chestnut hair flying free
Touch me, touch me
Held captive by the words of my own hand
Written in passion, yet never understood
I seek the one who knows my quiet darkness
My empty heart has been lonely too long
One small step is all I need
Follow me, follow me
Take me where I need to be
Shelter me, shelter me
I am moved by the tide of your attraction
Caught in the radiance of your casual smile
Lost forever in a sea of deafening emotions
I collapse at your feet and beg for more
Giving into eternity
Love me, love me
My eyes cry out a silent plea
Complete me, complete me"
Duo stood motionless, tears flowing down his face as he listened to Heero speak with such feeling. It was something he'd feared he'd never hear. Something told him in his heart that Heero really did love him, and that he was being stupid for wanting Heero to declare it openly to him without any further confirmation of Duo's feelings for him. It had been ten months. Things changed. For all Heero knew, Duo could have found someone else, right? Duo tried to reason with himself, but his fear won out over his faith, and he remained silent. He heard Heero gasp when the other boy saw his tears; Duo smiled sadly.
"It's beautiful, Heero... so emotionally powerful. I cry every time I read it."
Heero reached out and wiped the tears away gently, startling Duo again with his uncharacteristic behavior. "If it touches you, then it was worth writing."
Duo didn't know what to say to that. "The intensity of that poem compelled me to draw this. I haven't even been able to focus on anything else because of it." He looked into Heero's eyes and whispered: "I wasn't sure if I'd ever get to see the subject of the drawing in person again." Duo waited, hoping Heero would just say something... anything... that would indicate he shared Duo's feelings.
Heero could see the hurt in Duo's eyes when he spoke. He wanted to just tell Duo everything he was feeling, but he also wanted to surprise the other boy, let him see how much the boy once known as the 'Perfect Soldier' had changed. 'Soon, Duo. Soon I will be able to put all of your fears to rest.' As much as Heero wanted to lean in and take Duo's lips in a passionate kiss, he knew he had to wait.
"Are you about ready to go?" he asked instead, his voice soft.
Duo had been getting ready to give in to his desire to taste those lips again when Heero spoke. Bringing himself back to reality, Duo turned away and nodded. He felt his heart cry out, but he knew he had to face reality; Heero wasn't his. When he faced Heero again, his usual grin was in place.
"Yeah. The crew will be waiting, and man, you don't want to make them wait too long."
Heero nodded. He knew that mask so well. He didn't know why Duo was wearing it, but before the evening ended, Heero was determined to see it shatter to the ground for good. Duo was his; he would not let go so easily.
The first thing that Kyle noticed was that the boy with Duo wasn't just hot; he was a wet dream come to life. As Duo and Heero approached, Kyle immediately recognized the other boy as the one who had been dancing with Duo the previous night. It confused him. Was that why Duo hadn't wanted him to say anything? Did he not want the other boy to know how much Duo wanted him? Kyle wasn't sure. This guy was supposedly an old friend according to Duo, so why hadn't he made his presence known to Duo in the club? Kyle decided that before he said anything, he would wait and see what the deal was.
"Sweet K!" Duo exclaimed as he walked up to him, greeting him with some kind of handshake that Heero watched closely.
"Rhythm D. Looking good, man. Now who is this 'old friend' of yours?"
Duo grinned. "K, this is Heero. Heero, this Kyle, or better known as 'Sweet K'."
'Sweet K' was as tall as Duo, brown hair, and green eyes. Heero thought about Trowa when he first saw him, but quickly realized that the boy's temperament was more like a cross between Duo's and Quatre's. He was wearing a red tee shirt and black jeans, and Heero decided that he liked his open appearance.
"Hey," Heero replied as he held out his hand to Kyle. When Heero mimicked Duo's hand movements, Kyle laughed in surprise.
"He learns fast, D. That'll work to his advantage. How long have you guys known each other?"
"Seems like forever, eh, Heero?" Duo shot Heero a look that caused Heero to snort derisively.
"I wouldn't be sane if I'd known you for that long."
Kyle didn't miss the sexual tension coming from the pair. 'Well now, this is interesting. So, Duo, you finally found someone who's a challenge for you? I can't wait to see how this plays out.' He watched as Duo smirked back at his friend. Or was it lover? Kyle couldn't tell yet.
"That's not a very nice thing to say to someone you haven't seen for ten months, now is it?" Duo said, giving Heero a mock frown. "I thought we were going to try to get along for old times' sake, hmm?"
Heero actually smiled. "Duo, we never got along. Or have you developed selective memory since the last time I saw you?"
"Don't let him fool you, K" Duo said as he turned to Kyle. "We were two peas in a pod no matter what he says. He missed me if I stayed in the bathroom too long."
"Baka," Heero replied, smirking at Duo's teasing, wishing he felt like the boy wasn't doing it solely for Kyle's benefit. "I used to wish you would take twice as long just so I would get some peace."
Kyle looked back and forth between them, trying to determine what the truth was. His eyes met and held with Heero's, and he almost let out a chuckle when Heero winked at him, indicating that he was just having some fun with his long time buddy. Kyle smiled back, but he felt like something was off with Duo. He looked between the two again and noticed that Duo was smiling, but there was no real mirth. He decided to ignore it for now; he'd find out what was going on later.
"I don't know, D. Seems like you've finally met someone who is impervious to your charms. I think the crew will be very interested to see this. I believe history has been made tonight."
As if summoned by those words, a group consisting of two guys and a girl came around the corner.
"Yo! We have a visitor in the house!" came the voice of one of the boys. He was of medium height with red hair and brown eyes. Heero saw that he too was wearing a pair of black jeans, but had on a rich chocolate brown short sleeved metallic shirt.
Heero immediately noticed that Kyle's whole demeanor changed when he saw the other boy. Heero laughed to himself. If he hadn't have seen this same kind of behavior between Quatre and Trowa before they had gotten together, he'd never have seen the attraction between the two boys now. He could tell by how Kyle was acting that they weren't together... yet.
"Duo!" cried the girl as she practically threw herself into the other boy's arms. "K said you were coming, but I didn't believe even he could get you out two nights in a row."
"Cara, I didn't believe he could get me out two nights in a row either," Duo replied flatly, causing everyone to laugh.
Cara released him and shook her shoulder length blonde hair. Heero saw that she had beautiful sky blue eyes that seemed to take in everything... actually she was beginning to take him in at the moment.
"Dey?" another ebony haired boy asked as he looked at Heero intently, his dark blue eyes flashing with humor as turned his questioning gaze to Duo and saw him blush slightly.
"Everyone, this is Heero, my best friend. Heero, this is the crew." 'Everyone' seemed to realize that Duo's doujinshi character was based on the boy standing in front of them. They were speechless for a moment.
Kyle looked at Heero again and realized that he had been focusing so much on the fact that Heero was the one that had danced unknown with Duo the other night, that he hadn't noticed the similarities to the fictional character before. This new tidbit made matters even more confusing. What was going on here?
"I'm Cara," the blonde said, breaking the awkward silence. Her friendly smile reminded Heero of a little girl from long ago. "Any friend of Duo's is a friend of ours." Heero couldn't help but smile back. She was wearing a pair of dark blue jeans and a hot pink tank top. 'Cute' was the word that came to Heero's mind when he looked at her.
"Jesse's the name, Groovin's the game," came the voice of the boy with the dark blue eyes. Heero turned and nodded. He was wearing a pair of black leather pants and a dark blue button down silk shirt. Heero could tell that the boy was sizing him up on the spot. He smirked; he was instantly amused at the fact that it didn't bother him in the least, but it made him aware that the other boy had thought Heero was looking a little too long at Cara. 'So it was like that?' Heero smiled then looked at the final 'crew member'.
"And finally, me," the redhead said smiling. "Toby, or as the house calls me 'Smooth T'. Nice ta meet'cha."
"Don't let any of them fool you into thinking that they're anything but trouble," Duo said dryly, causing all of them to begin protesting vehemently.
Heero smiled at them again. For some reason, he understood what Duo saw in them. They were about the same age as Duo and him, maybe a year younger, only they seemed untouched by the war. Heero felt that it had been good for Duo to spend time with them. Maybe it had helped to erase some of the darkness the other boy had known. Maybe it could help him too.
"Nice to meet you all. And I won't believe anything Duo says about you either. I'm inclined to think he is somehow biased." Laughter met his words, and he turned to see Duo looking at him in shock once again.
"I think I like this guy," Kyle said, still laughing slightly. "What do you do for a living?"
"I write," Heero replied, feeling an odd sense of belonging from the ragtag bunch.
"Poetry," Duo supplied helpfully, earning a glare from his friend. He smiled warmly in response then added, "He also has a best-selling novel out and a sequel getting ready to be released."
"Wow!" Cara exclaimed brightly. "I guess that makes you famous."
"Almost as famous as our DMax, right, Duo?" Jesse's smile was wide as he saw Duo blush again.
"Duo's series is certainly popular, that's for sure," Heero agreed, looking at Duo as he said it to gage how his praise would be received. When Duo's violet gaze met his, he could see hurt and anger there. 'Why?'
Kyle sensed it. He didn't understand why Duo was acting like he was, but he somehow knew that Heero didn't understand any more than he did. For some reason, Duo wasn't letting the other boy have a chance to find out either. He liked Heero, and something told him that he was just what Duo needed. He didn't know what Heero was to Duo, but whatever he was, or would become, would be decided tonight, he was sure of it. He would do what he had to do to make sure Duo didn't blindly throw it away before he even knew what he had in his hands.
"Well then, Rhymin' 'Ro," Kyle said, administering the name for the first time that Heero would be deemed with from now on. "Welcome to the crew. " Before Heero had a chance to respond to his new identity, they made their way inside the club. The music was waiting.
