Part Fifteen

Outside the base, a young guardsman stood watch, his eyes scanning the grounds for anything out of place. With two Gundam Pilots captured, security was tight and tensions were high; the other pilots would most likely be coming to rescue their comrades. Gripping his rifle tightly, he stared into the shadows, imagining sudden attacks, explosions, something to break the stillness of the night.

The wind blew softly, ruffling his hair, and he sighed. It was the only sound he was able to make, as pain ripped across his neck, blood spraying against the wall. He crumpled to the ground, the life already fading from his eyes as blood gushed from his mangled throat.

Cobalt blue eyes stared coldly down at the lifeless body before turning away, and vanishing into the night.

"Let me out, let me out, let me out..." The boy in the cell rocked mindlessly, hands clutching his head, fingers thrust into his chestnut hair. The guards outside the door listened, curious.

"What the hell d'ya think's wrong with him?" one of them murmured, glancing in the tiny window. His companion shrugged. "Crazy, I s'pose. They'd all have t'be, fighting like they do."

"Crazy like a fox, y'mean," he chortled. "They made it this long, didn't they?"

"S'pose so. Dunno how much longer they'll hold out now that we got `em."

Suddenly, the lights flashed red above them, startling them from their reverie. Sirens wailed, alerting them to danger. "What the hell? We're under attack!!"

Odin looked up, startled, as the building shook with the force of an explosion. He was almost to Heero's cell, slipping through the shadows of the complex, taking out soldiers with lightning speed as he met them. <I can't have triggered something. It's not possible.>

Another explosion, and he turned in the direction of its sound. Down the corridor, he heard the sound of voices, and running feet.

"...coming from the holding bay... one of the gundams we captured! It's impossible!"

Odin's eyes widened.

Heero frowned slightly as he heard the commotion outside his cell. His interrogators had apparently decided that the attack took precedence, for they vanished, and were replaced by two guards, watching him from across the room as he sat restrained in his chair.

<Odin? Is that you?> he sent to his partner, searching for him with his mind.

<Um... no, actually. I'm getting close to your cell, but I'm not there yet. And I certainly haven't started any explosions. The guards are saying one of the Gundams they captured is escaping from the hangar bay, and it's tearing up everything in its way.>

<Does that mean... Duo's free?>

<Not sure. I was sorta working on getting you first.>

<Don't worry about me-- find Duo!>

He sensed Odin's assent, and felt his mental presence moving away. Sighing, he settled back in his chair, running his fingers over the cuffs that held him.

<They're just steel, not gundanium. This shouldn't be hard.>

Tensing his muscles, Heero yanked his hands outward. The chain on the cuffs snapped easily. He was already in motion before the guards had time to react more than the widening of his eyes. Solid punches to the face and gut, and the first guard was down. He pivoted, raising his hands to attack the second. Instead, he felt the crack of a rifle butt against his temple, shooting pain across his skull, blurring his vision. Growling, he launched himself at the man.

The guards in front of the braided prisoner's door shifted nervously. They had been ordered to remain at their posts, despite the people rushing around them. "The east wing is on fire! The mobile suit hangers have been demolished!"

Blanching, the guards tried to remain calm. It wasn't succeeding very well.

Especially when the prisoner's door blew off its hinges.

Odin rushed down the corridor toward Duo's cell, but stopped short as the heavy metal door flew across the hall in a wave of glowing violet energy. Very familiar energy. The guards were both down, caught in the blast. A figure walked slowly through the doorway, power rolling off of it like steam. The figure turned slowly, violet eyes glowing brightly in the red half-light.

Odin's eyes widened. "You!" he hissed.

The figure simply laughed.

Technique and style were completely gone; Heero attacked the man with pure primal instinct, fingers clawing, fists punching, ripping at every sensitive point he could find. The man fell to the ground in a heap, gurgling on his own blood and clutching at the ruin of his face and neck. Slowly, the red haze faded from Heero's eyes, and he shook his head to clear it.

<Now to get out of here.>

The metal door was no problem; he simply ripped it from its hinges, and flung it aside. A part of his mind was startled, amazed; how was he doing this? A part of him knew it felt right. The rest was occupied with only one thought. <Duo.>

<Long time no see, Odin.> Shinigami smiled sinisterly.

<Far too long, Shinigami. I should have destroyed you years ago.>

The braided figure laughed, eyes glowing with mirth. <You've tried. And failed, miserably. Not a single one of your incarnations has been enough to stop me. After all, I am a god. You can't touch me.>

"Even gods bleed," Odin gritted out, launching himself at his ancient enemy.
