To Fly On Broken Wings by tkmaxwell777

Part Nine

Heero smirked at his lover. Duo's face was bright red, as he realized who was NOT in their kitchen. His hair had been pulled into a careless ponytail, and he was wearing a pair of Heero's boxers, but for some reason, something seemed off... Heero saw the fear in his lover's eyes as Duo looked at him, and he redirected his attention to his lover's reaction. He could tell what Duo was thinking and knew he had to reassure the other boy that he wasn't upset from what Duo had said; on the contrary, Heero was quite pleased, especially from how Duo had changed 'sex' to 'making love'. Walking over to his lover, Heero pulled Duo into his arms and kissed him soundly as a gaping Quatre and Trowa watched. When he pulled away, he could see that Duo was surprised by his actions, but very relieved as well.

"Good morning, Duo-koi. Quatre and Trowa were just about to tell me what they were doing in town. Care to join us?"

Duo's eyes lit up with joy, "Of course... Heero-koi." The endearment let Heero know that Duo had understood. "I'll make breakfast while we talk." He gave Heero a peck on the nose then quickly made his way to the stove.

Heero suddenly realized what had been wrong at first when Duo had walked in. He looked over at Trowa just in time to see the green-eyed boy raise an eyebrow at him.

"Easy access, Yuy?"

Heero couldn't help but smile. "Kind of messy, but we have a laundry facility on site, so it's not too inconvenient." Heero noted the pleased look on Trowa's face at his willingness to play along.

Duo turned around, a puzzled look on his face. "What? Did I miss something?"

Trowa began laughing. "Silk isn't exactly the easiest fabric to clean. I would think you'd get cotton ones for that kind of activity."

"Like I said before, silk feels better," Heero replied, unable to keep from laughing along with Trowa when he looked back at Duo.

Duo stared at the two, completely oblivious as to what was so funny. "What the hell are you two talking about?"

"Oh!" Quatre exclaimed suddenly as he realized what was amiss. He had been confused as well, but as the subject of the other boys' discussion made itself clear, he began laughing so hard from their comments that he couldn't say anything more.

Heero continued to chuckle, but he could tell Duo was getting ready to really get pissed, so he walked up to his chestnut-haired lover and ran his hand over Duo's ass. "This." Heero's hand slid into the opening of Duo's boxers... that was mistakenly in the back instead of where it should have been.

Duo blushed crimson. "Shit, I was in such a hurry to get out here to kill Kyle..."

Heero let his fingers linger for a moment, giving Duo a soothing caress. "I think you need to wear them like this more often, koi" he said, winking at Duo before removing his hand.

It then occurred to the longhaired boy what Heero and Trowa had meant with their comments. "You bastard!" he cried out, swatting Heero with a dishtowel, a grin belying his indignant tone. "Easy access? Kind of messy? Why I outta 'omae o korosu' you!"

Heero leaned in and replied seductively, "I'll let you do that later. Right now we have guests."

Duo snorted. Only a week ago he never would have thought Heero Yuy could be such a tease. He was thankful he knew better now and thrilled that Heero was willing for others to know it too. "You're on, Yuy, but you'll be the one wearing the backwards boxers."

Quatre and Trowa exchanged surprised looks as Heero smirked and said evenly. "Ninmu Ryoukai."

Duo grinned. "Good." He beamed at their visitors as if nothing extraordinary had just happened. "So, Quat, Tro, what are you two doing here? Not that we mind or anything..."

Quatre was still so shocked that it took him a couple moments to recover before he could speak. "Well, I had to come here on business, and we decided that it would be fun to stop off and see you. One thing led to another, and well... we decided to have a mini-reunion."

Duo turned around smiling. "Oh yeah? Who's all comin'?"

Trowa looked over at Heero to see how the other boy was taking it; he was once again amazed at how calm the former Wing pilot looked. In fact, Heero acted almost pleased by the announcement. "Wufei should be here this afternoon. We tried to contact you, Heero, but the mailing address we had came back as undeliverable. Guess we know why now."

Heero smirked. "You mean Sally is letting Chang have time off? I bet that was rough managing it."

Quatre laughed. "You have no idea. I mean, he and Sally are best friends, and they make great partners, but Sally can be such an over-protective sister-type sometimes. Trowa says she's even worse than Catherine!"

"Whoa!" Duo exclaimed as he scrambled the eggs he was cooking. "That's saying a lot. Guess Wu-man will need a lot of consoling when he gets here." Although he was turned away from the others again, they all knew the mischievous gleam he had to have in his eyes. Heero shook his head, smiling at the other two former pilots.

"In other words, Duo is going to annoy the hell out of him."

"Hey!" Duo yelled, turning his head to mock-glare at his lover. "Fei loves it and don't forget it."

Heero rolled his eyes before looking at the other boys, who both snickered at the picture the formerly stoic boy made as he did it. Neither one had ever expected Heero to be so open... and, well... funny. Heero could almost tell what they were thinking and decided to shock them further; he was beginning to enjoy doing that.

"Hey, Duo, why don't we all meet the Crew at the club tonight? I bet they would love to meet Quatre, Trowa, and Wufei. What do you think?"

Duo had spooned out the eggs onto four plates and was buttering toast as he answered, "I think that would be a great idea! I'll call Kyle later. What time will Wu be in?

"Around five, I think," Trowa replied, eager to find out just who 'the crew' was. He had a feeling they were partially responsible for the changes in both Duo and Heero.

"Cool!" Duo said as he placed the plates of food down on the table. "How long you guys planning on stayin'?" He sat down next to Heero and began eating, then noticed that Heero was pouting, and raised an eyebrow in amusement. "What?"

Heero looked abashedly at the other boys before muttering, "You forgot the orange juice."

Duo chuckled. "Don't worry, baby, I made some yesterday, and there's plenty for this morning." With that, Duo stood and retrieved the pitcher and some glasses, gaining a sheepish smile from his lover.

Quatre and Trowa watched the display, a knowing look passing between them. Quatre smiled at the two other boys, feeling the love and joy between them. He had wanted Duo to be happy for so long, and Heero... well, he'd always hoped, but had feared the other boy would never find his way; he was glad he'd been wrong. His eyes met Trowa's, and they knew they didn't have to worry about their friends any longer.

"I'll make some stir-fry later, Duo... if you want," Heero offered, not wanting it to seem like he was letting Duo do all the work.

Duo sighed. "In other words, Heero wants you guys to know that he's not really that demanding, but that I have spoiled him with fresh squeezed orange juice all week, and now he's addicted." Duo leaned over and kissed his blushing lover before Heero could say anything.

Trowa gave Duo an understanding smile. "The first time I made spaghetti for Quatre, you would have thought I had handed him the moon," he said teasingly as he looked at his own blushing lover. "I made garlic bread with cheese to go with it, and he loved it, so it became a once-a-week meal for us." He paused then continued, giving Quatre a loving look, "It was some months later that I decided on the spur of the moment to surprise him with it, but I discovered we didn't have any cheese, so I just made the bread without it." Trowa looked at Heero. "I've never seen a smile turn to a frown so quickly as he realized his bread was sans cheese. He tried not to show me how disappointed he was, but I could tell. I make sure Provolone is a regular item on our grocery list now, just so as not to disappoint my blonde Arabian." Trowa leaned over to Quatre and kissed him softly on the cheek.

Quatre looked at Heero, and they shared an embarrassed smile, both of them thankful to have such caring companions. Duo reached over and caressed Heero's arm, causing the other boy to look at him. "If I have to buy all of the oranges in Japan, I will just to make you happy."

Heero looked into beautiful violet as he traced his fingers along Duo's jaw. "And I will go to the ends of the Earth just to find butter pecan ice cream for you."

Quatre and Trowa gave them both a look before Trowa said, "Do we really want to know?"

The next couple of hours were spent laughing and talking. By the time Quatre and Trowa made their way out the door to check into their hotel, Heero and Duo were both more than glad to have their friends visiting them. As the door shut behind the two former pilots, Duo grinned mischievously at his lover, who was giving him a hungry look in return.

"Race ya to the shower," the longhaired boy challenged as they both took off into the bedroom. It would be several hours later before Duo would make that call to Kyle.

"Hey, Cara! How's it goin'?"

Cara stared at the vid screen, a smile coming to her face at the image of her friend. "Not too bad, Kyle. What's up?"

Kyle smiled brightly. "D and 'Ro are bringing the other G-pilots to the shack tonight. They're all in town, and they want us to meet them. Cool, huh?"

Cara nodded excitedly. "Sweet! Have you called Jess, yet?"

"Yep. Just got off the vid with him. He would have called you but..."

Cara frowned. "Yeah, I know. He was afraid he'd get Todd, and then I wouldn't be able to go. It's okay, Kyle. I understand." She knew Jesse was trying so hard to do the right thing, but it still bothered her when he distanced himself from her. He was her best friend, and he meant everything to her... she couldn't afford to lose him, no matter what her brother said.

"Do you think Todd will let you go?"

Cara thought for a moment. "I don't know, but I can at least ask. Besides, it's not like I don't go to the club on a regular basis. He just gets in these moods where he wants to tell me what to do. I'm really getting tired of it, but I don't know how to get it through his thick head that he's only making things worse when he goes into full-protective-bastard-brother mode."

"I know. Hang in there, babe. You've only got a little over a year," Kyle replied sympathetically.

"I know," she replied sadly then smiled. "If I can make it tonight, I'll be there. What time?"

Kyle smiled back. "Nine. And if you do come, wear something sassy. Jesse has really missed you, and it will cheer him up."

Cara laughed. "And we all know how much cheering up the ever-brooding Jesse Talbot always needs," she replied dryly.

Kyle chuckled then became serious. "You do know how he feels about you, don't you?"

Cara closed her eyes for a moment and sighed. When she opened them again, she looked at the screen and said evenly, "Kyle, I've loved Jess for about as long as you've loved Toby, but there's no way we can be together until my brother gets it through his head that Jesse is not the enemy." She paused, looking down at her hands where a sterling silver ring sparkled on her right middle finger. "I can't let Jess know until that barrier has been removed. I know I hurt him when I act so careless, but I don't know what else to do."

Kyle nodded. "I know, hon, and I understand, but it still doesn't make it any easier to see him suffer."

Cara sighed again. "I know. I promise to be extra-sweet to him tonight, okay? Give him a little hope?"

Kyle grinned. "And wear some tight blue jeans perhaps?"

Cara shook her head as she grinned back before disconnecting the call. She knew exactly which pair of blue jeans Kyle was referring to. Looking in her closet, she saw the ones in question and giggled. Her laughter was cut short by a voice behind her.

"Who was that?"

Cara turned to look at her older brother. Todd Morgan was almost three years her senior, but the broken look in his eyes made him seem even older. He had the same color eyes as his sister, but his hair was a shade darker, falling to his shoulders in back and on the sides, his bangs covering his forehead in front. He was handsome; of course, his attitude ever since his parents' deaths left something to be desired.

"Kyle called to let me know they're all meeting at the club tonight. Duo's friends are in town, and they want to meet all of us." She held her breath as she waited for him to react.

"The Gundam pilots? Cara, I don't think a girl your age should be running around with trained killers..."

"Oh, Todd, give it a rest," she snapped angrily. "They are only a year older than me, and they are the good guys! For goodness sakes, I couldn't be in better hands."

Todd glared at his little sister. "They were soldiers, Cara, and soldiers aren't known for their discipline when it comes to pretty girls wearing entirely too provocative clothing."

Cara fumed. "Listen, dear brother, four out of five of them are gay. I seriously doubt you have to worry over my virtue with them. And as for the fifth one, he was married before and is still honoring his dead wife's memory. Trust me, I couldn't be safer if I were out with a bunch of nuns!"

"Well maybe I should just see for myself," he replied evenly.

Cara sighed heavily. "Fine. You need to get out anyway. Maybe you can find someone to sleep with so you'll quit bitching at me."

Todd flinched like he'd been slapped. "Cara Marie! Don't you EVER say something like that again!"

Cara took in her brother's slightly flushed face and couldn't help but smile. "Todd needs to get la~id, Todd needs to get la~id," she sang, making her brother turn even redder.

"See! That's exactly why you shouldn't be friends with a bunch of guys!"

Cara's laughter chased him out of her room as he left to get ready to escort his sister out for the evening.

Quatre sighed happily. A pair of strong arms held him tightly as they lay in bed. He and Trowa had checked into the hotel and then 'tried out' the bed... more than once. The blonde grinned wickedly; it was a good thing they had the suite across the hall reserved for Wufei, so they wouldn't have to worry about bothering other guests with their couplings. Quatre couldn't help it that he was so vocal in the heat of passion. As for Trowa... well... Trowa may be quiet most of the time, but when it came to making love, the boy was downright loud. Quatre sighed again; this had been a wonderful trip so far.

"What are you thinking about, love?"

Quatre turned in Trowa's arms and smiled. "About how glad I am we decided to make this trip, how glad I am that Duo and Heero are finally together and happy, how glad I am that the man I love is holding me in his arms, and how glad I am that Wufei finally got some time off. Everything is working out so well."

Trowa kissed the blonde's nose. "I can't believe how much Heero has changed. Even Duo seems to have grown up some. Wufei is in for a surprise when he sees them."

Quatre laughed. "Well, at least when he sees Heero. I have a feeling Duo will be in his usual witty form tonight. I can't wait to see Heero at a club! I just can't imagine."

"What do you want to bet he can give Duo a run for his money on the dance floor?"

Quatre looked into laughing green eyes and grinned. "You think? I'll take that bet, Barton. Now, what are we betting?" The light shining in his aqua eyes told Trowa what the Arabian wanted. He smirked.

"Winner gets choice of positions for the rest of the trip, including how many times the other gets to come."

Quatre's grin widened. "You're on. And you're right when you say 'Winner' because I know I'm right."

Trowa shook his head. "Quatre, love, I have a feeling you're wrong this time... and I can't wait to prove it. There's a couple of things I've been wanting to try for a long, long time, and I think I'm going to get my chance after tonight."

"We'll see, Tro-chan, we'll see," the blonde replied, his voice challenging yet full of anticipation no matter the outcome. He looked into those amazing emerald depths again before adding playfully, "Why don't you give me a preview of what's in store for me if I lose?"

The smile on Trowa's face would have shocked anyone else had they seen it.

Wufei stepped off the shuttle, asking himself for the hundredth time why in hell he was doing this. It wasn't as if anyone would be particularly glad to see him. Wufei winced. Well, that wasn't entirely true; Duo was always glad to see him, but the longhaired boy was only a friend, and Wufei always felt like he was a fifth wheel around Maxwell, Barton, and Winner... even when Yuy wasn't there. No matter what, Heero was always with Duo in his heart, and although Wufei had no interest in Duo other than as a friend, it didn't keep it from reminding him how alone he really was.

He hadn't been with anyone since Meiran. Wufei knew that he should get on with his life, but no one seemed to spark his interest in that way. It wasn't as if he wouldn't like someone to share his life with; on the contrary, he desperately wished he could find his soul mate. Problem was, no one ever seemed to measure up. Everyday he was confronted with women that only served to infuriate him. Sally Po and Lucrezia Noin were the only ones he had found that were vaguely attractive to him, but Noin was with Zechs, and Sally... well, Sally was like a sister to him. There were other women Preventers, but Wufei just couldn't find someone who stirred him both sexually and intellectually. 'The Lonely Dragon'... Wufei shook his head sadly at the title that Duo had bestowed upon him more than once; Maxwell didn't know how true that title had proven to be.

He wondered if Quatre and Trowa had located Yuy. Wufei had bought both of Heero's books, surprised at how good the first one had been, and intrigued by the second one. He'd never known that Heero could be so creative. Some of the poetry had been so beautiful, and Wufei found himself longing to talk to the former Wing pilot just on a scholarly level. It was obvious that Heero had been referring to Duo in more than one of his works. Wufei hoped that Heero would someday accept his feelings and let himself love Duo; the braided baka deserved that love based on his faithfulness alone.

Wufei smiled as he thought about the longhaired imp. He was certain Duo had a ton of pranks and loads of teasing to throw at him while he was there. Although Wufei pretended to get angry, Duo's antics actually pleased him; it was the braided boy's way of telling Wufei that he truly cared for him and accepted him. Wufei cherished their friendship. It wasn't something they spoke openly about, but he let the other boy know in his own way that the feelings were reciprocated equally. If taking off time from work to come and see him wasn't enough to speak of his devotion then nothing would. Wufei snorted. The braided baka better appreciate all he'd gone through to get there; Sally had given him such a hard time about it before relenting. He had a lot of paperwork to catch up on when he got back in return for his absence. Wufei sighed as he headed for his rented car; this trip had better be worth it.

"Toby, get a move on, man. It's eight-thirty, and we promised to be there at nine!"

Kyle pulled on his dark blue jeans, tucking in his white tee shirt, as he yelled at his lover in the other room. A long-sleeved yellow button-up was next, the sleeves rolled up to the elbows. He looked in the bedroom mirror and smiled; he looked pretty hot in a decent sort of way. He turned and sat down on the bed, pulling on his brown boot shoes. The bathroom door opened, and when he looked up, his breath caught.

Toby had on a pair of brown leather pants and a black silk button-up short-sleeved shirt. Black biker boots graced his feet, and his curly red hair was pulled back into a ponytail. In other words, he looked incredible. Kyle whistled appreciatively.

"Damn, T, you look good enough to eat."

"You did that earlier, remember?" came the lazy reply as the redhead raised an eyebrow.

Kyle laughed, growing hard again from the memory. "How could I forget? You're my favorite food group, you know."

It was Toby's turn to laugh as he launched himself onto the other boy, knocking him back onto the bed. "Do you know how much I love you, K?"

Kyle smiled happily. "How much?"

Toby leaned down and kissed the brown-haired boy deeply before replying, his face softening. "More than there are stars in the sky, more than there are grains of sand on the shore. I love you more than anything, Kyle."

Kyle looked into chocolate velvet and felt himself falling all over again. "More than infinity, Toby. More than any words can say. I am yours, and you are mine, and there is nothing more I could want."

"Gosh, we sound worse than Heero and Duo," Toby commented with a grin. Kyle slapped him on his leather-clad ass. "Ow! Well, it's true. I bet Heero couldn't have written anything sappier than that."

Kyle grinned. "You're probably right. I guess love turns you into a poet."

"And a sex maniac," the redhead smirked. "I'm so sore I'll have trouble dancing tonight."

"Well, you wanted me to be on top, man. I can't help it that I enjoyed it so much."

Toby took in the gleam in his lover's eyes and leaned down for another kiss. "I'd return the favor but we have a date to keep. I promise you, though, when we get home tonight, I got dibs."

"Fine with me," Kyle drawled. "Just wait for me to get those leather pants off before you lose control, man. Leather is a bitch to clean!"

He hoped Cara would be able to make it. Jesse looked into the mirror and sighed. He hadn't seen her in over a week, and it was really starting to depress him. They had been best friends for a long time, and even if he didn't love her, he would still be missing her. Her bright laughter, her sunny smile, her witty words... he loved every single thing about her. Just her presence brightened his day and made him feel better. His parents' deaths had hurt him deeply, but having Cara there with him had helped him get through it; they had been there for each other.

Jesse surveyed his appearance again. He was wearing a blue tee shirt and light blue jeans that were snug without being uncomfortable. His defined chest filled out the shirt nicely, and his brown boots complemented the look since he'd be wearing a brown and blue long sleeved over shirt.

"Not too bad, Talbot. Maybe Cara will give you a look or two tonight."

He frowned at those words. It wasn't as if Cara didn't compliment him; in fact, she was always saying how handsome he was, but... Jesse shook his head. He feared he would always just be her friend. It wasn't as if that was too bad a thin, really, but he didn't think he could bear it if she fell in love with someone. To see her with another man, smiling at him, laughing with him, touching him... it would just be too much to take. It was his greatest fear, and yet he wanted her to be happy, so wouldn't it become a reality he would have to deal with someday? Jesse sighed again, looking one more time before turning away to head out for the club. He hoped Cara would be able to make.

"Wufei!" Quatre shouted as he embraced the Chinese boy happily.

Trowa stood by and gave their friend a calmer welcome with a handshake. "Chang."

"Winner. Barton. My accommodations are rather... spacious. Any particular reason why you booked such a huge suite just for me?"

Quatre blushed. "We wanted privacy?"

Trowa smiled. "We knew you'd take the back bedroom, so we wouldn't be bothering you with... well... you know."

Wufei rolled his eyes. "You two get worse every time I see you! You can't tell me that the sex is STILL that good!"

Quatre and Trowa looked at each other and grinned before turning back to Wufei to answer in unison, "The sex is STILL that good."

Wufei shook his head. "Poor Duo. I'm sure he doesn't know what he's in store for having to watch you two while we're here. We are going out with him tonight, right?"

Trowa nodded, hiding his joy as he replied casually, "Actually, we're going out with Duo and Heero tonight to meet some of their friends at the club."

"Thank Nataku, you found him!" Wufei exclaimed, relieved that he wouldn't be the sole recipient of Duo's mischief for the evening. He'd missed the 'their friends' remark or he'd been better prepared for...

"Oh, we found him all right," Quatre said with a grin. "Standing only in his boxers as he greeted us inside Duo's apartment this morning."

Wufei's mouth dropped open for a moment before he recovered. A warm smile soon graced his face as he realized what that meant. "It's about damn time."

"My sentiments exactly," Trowa stated, glad that the other boy was taking it so well. He had feared Wufei would be upset for some reason. He knew how much Wufei cared for Duo, even if just as a friend.

"So they are lovers now?" the Chinese boy asked.

Quatre nodded. "Yes and very proud of it. You're not going to believe the changes in Heero."

Wufei saw the knowing looks pass between the two other boys and contemplated what that could mean. He took a deep breath and said with a smirk, "Then by all means, take me to Wonderland. Alice wants to peer through the looking-glass, and the Cheshire Cat is waiting."
