Heero stood staring at the grave in disbelief. He had meant to come there sooner, but the memories had kept him away. He knew facing this was going to be difficult, but he also knew he had no other choice; it wasn't as if he could avoid it forever. There was pain he had to deal with, and the only way to do that was to go to the source, and let go of the past. His mind wandered, trying to give him some way to cope with the present. Had it only been four years since he'd met Duo? Four years of fighting wars together, being partners with the Preventers, becoming lovers and soul mates... it seemed like such a short time now in comparison to a lifetime he had yet to live. He couldn't help but sigh as he remembered how the braided boy had shot him that fateful day on the dock. It was the beginning of the greatest friendship and hardest relationship of his life. Heero smiled; Duo had always been such a challenge.
//Had your name all tattooed on my heart, 'cos God, how could this be wrong? It's unbelievable, unbelievable//
All through the war, Duo had made Heero feel. It had annoyed Heero to no end, but the Deathscythe pilot had ignored the death glares and death threats, intent upon finding the person trapped behind the Wing pilot's indifferent demeanor. Teasing that bordered indecency, talking that was incessant, and friendship that was unrelenting had been Duo's choices of weaponry; cold looks, harsh words, and avoidance had been Heero's. They had waged that battle for the first year they'd known each other. When the war had ended, Heero still couldn't seem to let go of the soldier within, even though he had kept in touch with the other boy. It had been a good thing too since they had been fighting once more only a year later, but this time, Heero couldn't remain as distant; Duo had broken down the walls of resistance that Heero had built so carefully. Heero had fought him every step of the way, fearing that somehow Duo would succeed in making him admit that he was human after all; Duo had done just that. By the time they had joined the Preventers, Heero had found friendship with Duo to be something he couldn't escape. They had still fought, arguing and bickering, but there was an understanding that hadn't been before, and Heero had silently been thankful that Duo was there.
//Just the picture of me left out in this Hollywood Babylon is unbelievable, unbelievable//
Heero could still remember that day when Duo had been reading that doujinshi. They were staying at one of Quatre's houses, using it as a base of operations for their Preventer activities. Heero had been trying to type reports all afternoon, but Duo had been a constant distraction. He could still hear the noises the other boy had been making while he'd read his suggestive manga, so unaware of what he was doing to Heero as the blue-eyed boy had listened. Heero could still see the look on Duo's face when Heero had turned to stare at him in shock after the braided boy's sexy voice had informed him that Duo was going to masturbate right in front of him. He could feel the excitement and fear grip his heart just like it had then as Duo lay on the bed, his hand slipping inside his boxers. Heero could still see the look of rapture on Duo's face as he had unbound his hair, the final action that tempted Heero beyond his limits. Heero had been unable to keep from touching himself as Duo encouraged him to let go and feel. That was the day they had discovered their passion for each other.
//So let my greatest fear walk out the door, this ain't what we're fighting for//
Heero took a deep breath. It had been a few months later before they had found love. The sex had been incredible, but Heero had seen something more between Quatre and Trowa, and he had wanted that something more with Duo. After confronting Duo about the fact that he was only using Heero for sex, he had threatened Duo to not touch him again; it had been the longest days of Heero's life. He had berated himself for allowing the other boy to break through the shell of defenses he had so rigidly erected, promising himself that no one else would ever touch his heart again. Quatre had been such a good friend to him then, talking with him, trying to keep him from retreating completely within himself again. Heero would learn later that Trowa had tried to speak with Duo, tried to make Duo see what he was throwing away because of his fear of allowing their relationship to become something more than sexual. Heero would never forget that morning when Duo had finally realized that it was too late because he already loved Heero. That day had been the first time they'd actually made love.
//You don't say that it's over. Never thought this could die, but you speak without words, making me feel so damn good. Bye. Unbelievable, unbelievable//
Heero closed his eyes, blocking out the sight of the tombstone as he recalled how they had bounded up the steps to their room. Pulling off each other's clothes, they had kissed with an urgency that took each other's breath away. It had seemed like time stood still for them as they memorized the feel of each other again.
~~~
Heero pulled away from Duo's embrace. Never taking his blue eyes off of the other boy, he lay back on the bed, his naked body displayed invitingly for his lover as hungry violet eyes raked over him.
"Make love to me, Duo."
Duo took a shaky breath then nodded. "I need you so much, Heero. I've missed you," he groaned as he lowered himself onto the dark-haired boy.
Soft lips descended upon Heero's, tender yet demanding. Heero moaned, opening his mouth to welcome Duo's tongue inside, his own tongue meeting Duo's to taste his lover's sweetness. The kiss deepened, their bodies moving against each other, skin caressing skin. Heero could feel Duo's erection rubbing his own, the silky hardness making his arousal pulse with desire. Duo broke the kiss only to nip at Heero's jaw, and then continued down his neck to his chest. Heero writhed under Duo's mouth as the braided boy licked a hot trail to his nipple, suckling it lovingly before administering the same treatment to its mate. By the time Duo began kissing Heero's abdomen, Heero was moaning in pleasure.
It had never felt like this before, this tender loving that was happening between them; Heero wanted to cry at the beauty of what Duo was giving him. He opened his blue eyes to see Duo reach his erection. Violet eyes were shining with love and longing; it was incredible the way Duo looked at that moment. Heero couldn't tear his eyes away from his lover as those luscious lips neared his shaft, a pink tongue slipping out slowly to lick the nectar from his weeping tip. Heero's breath caught as he watched Duo close his eyes, savoring the taste of him. When Duo's eyes opened again, Heero could see the passion burning there... for him alone.
Duo pushed off of the bed to stand. His eyes never left Heero's as he pulled the tie from his braid to set his hair free. It cascaded around him, chestnut strands of silken beauty, just as beguiling and spellbinding as it had been the first time Heero had seen it loose; Heero had to feel it on his skin, had to touch it before he went crazy.
"Duo, please, let me feel you," his husky voice pleaded.
Duo smiled. "The hair gets you every time." With that he crawled back onto the bed... back onto Heero.
Heero gasped as the softness brushed his thighs, his stomach, and his chest; there were no words for the exquisite torture and rapturous ecstasy of that feeling. Surrounded by a waterfall of chestnut wonder, he reached up and pulled Duo to him for a passionate kiss, burying his fingers in that silky paradise.
"I'm so sorry, Heero. I was just afraid... afraid to let myself get that close because I was so sure you wouldn't," Duo whispered as he placed little kisses along Heero's neck.
"Duo," Heero exhaled softly. "How could I not love you? You're the only one who has ever touched me... not just my body, but my soul." He looked deep into those pools of violet, letting himself get lost in them for what would be only one of many times. "You didn't give up on me when I wanted to give up on myself. You gave me something to live for, Duo... you."
Duo smiled lovingly, his eyes bright with unshed tears as he caressed Heero's cheek. "You are so amazing. Just when I think I know you, you show me that there is so much more inside you that I have yet to discover. You are the treasure I will never completely find."
Duo took Heero's lips in another kiss as his hands caressed Heero's body, drawing gasps of pleasure from Heero with each touch. Duo then pulled away, grinning down at his lover as he reached for the well-used tube of lubricant. Positioning himself between Heero's thighs, he flipped open the cap and squeezed a good-sized amount onto his fingers. Kissing Heero's thighs lightly, his fingers moved between the dark-haired boy's cheeks.
"Duo, more, please," Heero pleaded, wanting, needing to feel the other boy's fingers inside him.
Duo slowly traced Heero's entrance, relishing the other boy's cries that his ministrations caused. With infinite tenderness, he inserted his finger inside, caressing the muscles that clenched at the intrusion. He soon added another, stroking the inner walls, stretching the passageway for his possession. One tip searched for that place within Heero that Duo knew so well; Heero yelled out when Duo found it.
"Duo! Please... now..."
"Not yet, koi," Duo said huskily, his arousal almost painful from the sounds his lover was making. "I am going to take my time with you, show you how much you mean to me, love you like you've never been loved before."
Heero was so hard it hurt. Duo moved his fingers in and out of his body, and Heero cried out again as the longhaired boy touched that spot inside him over and over. Pleasure so intense it was almost unbearable coursed through his body each time Duo drove his fingers against it. When Duo added a third, Heero knew he couldn't take much more.
"Duo! I need you inside me... please! I can't wait any longer!"
Duo looked down at him, and Heero knew he would remember how his lover looked at that moment for the rest of his life. Hair flowing, eyes shining, chest heaving, Duo Maxwell was beautiful beyond words.
"How did I ever merit someone as incredible as you?" Heero whispered, awe filling his voice.
Duo smiled. "I ask myself that question every time I look into your eyes, Heero. All I know is that we have each other, and that's good enough for me."
Removing his fingers, Duo shifted to lift Heero's legs over his shoulders. He spread Heero's cheeks, his erection brushing Heero's entrance for a moment before the tip pushed inside. Heero groaned as he felt Duo begin filling him. It was slow, oh so slow, as Duo slid in inch by incredible inch. They were both panting by the time Duo was fully seated.
"Oh, Duo... so good..." Heero moaned.
"Heero," was all Duo could mutter as he began shallow thrusts into his lover's tight heat.
They moved together at a leisurely pace, the passion building between them slowly as their bodies melded. Duo pulled Heero up until the dark-haired boy was straddling Duo, his thighs on either side of Duo's, his longhaired lover continuing to piston in and out of him. Heero used Duo's shoulders to raise himself up only to plunge back down into Duo's thrusts. Every thrust was hitting Heero's prostate, causing the dark-haired boy to cry out loudly in pleasure. Duo's arms were wrapped around Heero; his hands went to Heero's shoulders for leverage to lift himself up and to pull Heero back down onto him, his shouts mingling with his lover's.
"Heero... I've never felt... anything like... this before," Duo said breathlessly as he moved inside him.
Heero couldn't believe how it felt either, how unbelievable it was that Duo was making love to him like this. He watched as Duo closed his eyes, his head tossed back, hair falling around him. Heero traced his lover's features into his heart, memorizing every curve, each expression. Duo opened his eyes again to gaze into Heero's, showing Heero everything inside his heart as Heero looked into those violet depths.
Neither one could keep the end from nearing. Their rhythm dissolved into frantic thrusting of flesh on flesh. Duo reached between them, taking Heero's erection in his hand to pump it in time with them. Heero felt his world begin to explode moments later.
"Duo! Duo! Duuuuuuooooooo!" Blinding pleasure ripped through him as his seed pulsed out of him, streams of warmth covering Duo's hand and their chests. He felt Duo tense and yell out his own completion, filling Heero with his passion, claiming him as his lover for good.
"Heero! Yes! Oh, yes! Heero! Heero!" Duo cried as he pumped his release into his lover's body. Waves of emotion flowed through him, intensifying his orgasm beyond anything he'd ever known. He held Heero close, never wanting to leave the warmth of the other boy's body.
Heero clung to Duo, feelings so strong he was afraid he'd lose control over them. Tears of joy, of completion, of love, threatened to take him over, but Heero fought to regain his composure. Finally he pulled away to look at his lover. Duo smiled at him as tears tracked down his own face.
"Heero." No other words were needed.
They disentangled themselves long enough to get into bed, only to entangle once more. Heero lay with Duo's head on his chest, the silken strands of Duo's hair covering them. He thought he'd never felt more content in his life, knowing that Duo cared for him. Apparently Duo was thinking along the same lines.
"If I died right now, I would know what it means to be loved," Duo whispered before drifting off to sleep.
~~~
//'Boy', I picture how the ghost of you would follow me everywhere, it's undeniable, unbelievable//
Heero felt the tears on his face and tried to blink the pending ones away. His eyes tracked to the grave again, and he felt the edge of another memory trying to surface, but he pushed it away. He knew he had to accept this, had to move on with his life, but it was so hard. He thought about the changes he had went through over the past two years. Becoming lovers wasn't the end of the struggle with Duo; no, it was only the beginning. Learning to be open and honest, even when it hurt, was one of the most difficult things Heero had tried to do. How do you tell someone that you make better stir-fry than his without sounding insulting? How do you explain yet again that hair must be removed from a drain regularly so it doesn't clog without sounding condescending? How do you ask someone to let you go on a mission alone because you know they'd only get in the way without sounding over-protective? He had failed in all of these, yet Duo had forgiven him, had been patient with him... after he'd raised hell and let Heero know that he was being a bastard. Heero smiled through his tears; Duo had always been his equal in all things.
//If I couldn't feel your velvet lips, Y'fingers run through my hair, it's inconceivable, unbelievable//
It began raining. Heero felt the drops hit his face, mixing with the remnants of his tears. He focused his attention back onto the tombstone, reading the name, contemplating a life without so many things he had grown accustomed to feeling. Duo hadn't been there when Heero had traveled with Odin Lowe as his apprentice assassin. Duo hadn't known Heero when he had first met Doctor J and become a Gundam pilot. Duo hadn't seen Heero that night he'd blown up the base, only to watch in horror as a mobile suit fell into a civilian building, destroying a city block. All of those things had happened without Duo, and even though Heero knew that Duo had understood his guilt and remorse, Heero had tried to bear it alone. Duo had often told him that when two people loved each other, they shared their sorrows as well as their joys. That was what made a relationship last, being there for each other when the other person needed you the most. Heero looked down at the bracelet on his left wrist and fingered it lovingly as he thought about the day Duo had asked him to let the violet-eyed boy be that person for him for the rest of their lives together.
//So let my greatest fear walk out the door, this ain't what we're fighting for//
~~~
Violet eyes gleamed as Duo led Heero along the shore, their fingers interlaced intimately. They came to the spot Duo wanted and stopped. Heero looked at Duo expectantly. His braided lover had been awfully quiet that morning, which was always a sign that Duo was up to something. Heero watched as Duo turned to face the ocean.
"Do you know where we are?"
There was a quality to Duo's voice that Heero had never heard before. "No, should I?"
Duo chuckled lightly before turning to smile at his lover. "This is the beach where we landed after jumping from the Alliance Medical Building. This is the spot where I told you that I was the only friend you had." Duo's smile became tender. "This is the place where I fell in love with you."
Heero was dumbfounded. They had been walking along the shore for some time now, but he hadn't noticed how familiar everything was; he had been quite engrossed with watching the wisps of Duo's hair flying on the breeze. He didn't know what to say, but Duo didn't seem to mind his silence.
"I didn't realize then that I loved you. It took me, what, two and a half years to admit it?" he grinned ruefully. "Ah, doesn't matter. This is where it all began. I had been intrigued when I shot you, but here... here is where I lost my heart."
Heero saw the light of love shining in Duo's eyes and felt his heart soar. It had been six months since they'd declared their love, but seeing it reflected in violet always made Heero realize all over again that it was true. He saw Duo reach into his pocket and pull something out as he walked over to him.
"I never knew what it meant to love until you, Heero. I never believed that I would find myself in someone the way I have in you. You have given me so much of yourself, and all I have to offer in return is my love, my soul, and my life. I want to be with you always. I pledge myself to you, forsaking all others, loving only you, living each day to make you happy. All that I am, I give to you."
Heero stood stunned as Duo reached out to pull his left hand towards him. He saw a flash of gold as Duo secured something around his wrist. When Duo let go, Heero could see a bracelet there, reflecting in the midday sun. His eyes flew to Duo's face, seeing the joy there, as Duo took his other hand, turning it palm up to lay something in it.
"Will you take me as your life-mate? Will you let me be here for you for as long as we live?"
Those words went straight to Heero's heart. He looked down at his hand to see another bracelet, and he knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that this was his destiny, his future, and his forever. His eyes met Duo's again as he reached for his lover's left wrist. Without any hesitation, he spoke, as he looked into glimmering violet.
"My life would be so dim and dark without you in it. You give me the strength to face my failures, the faith to believe in my dreams, and the love that makes my life worth living. To spend the rest of my life with you would be my fondest wish come true. I pledge myself to you, forsaking all others, loving only you, living each day to make you happy. All that I am, I give to you."
Duo leaned forward and captured Heero's lips just as the dark-haired boy finished saying the last word.
~~~
Heero read the gold inscription out loud as the rain fell down on him. "To Heero, My Life-Mate and Soul-Mate in this lifetime and beyond. Duo." Duo's had the same inscription, only addressed to him and signed by Heero. It had been another turning point of their relationship. Duo had insisted that when Heero had given him "All that I am", that had meant Heero's past as well. Duo had told him that he needed to let it go; Heero had denied the problem, not wanting to admit that he still had the nightmares from time to time. He'd thought Duo hadn't known; he'd been wrong. Duo had finally suggested a solution. The two lovers had quarreled about it, only to come to the conclusion that they both needed to reconcile their pasts in order to be free to love each other the way they wanted to. They had agreed within the next year to take a trip where they would basically allow the other one to fall apart and be there to help him pull himself back together. Heero looked down at the plot of grass that had grown since the last time he'd seen it; they hadn't been able to keep that timetable.
//You don't say that it's over, never thought this could die, but you speak without words, making me feel so damn good. Bye. Unbelievable, unbelievable//
"You are going to catch your death of cold if you don't get out of this rain, Heero," came a familiar voice.
"Hn. Guess I didn't notice."
A hand fell on Heero's shoulder, warm and comforting. "Tell me about what happened."
Heero had been avoiding it again. His companion had known it and had seemingly decided to help him. Heero sighed heavily; this was why he had come in the first place. May as well get it over with.
//Did you really think about it, what we could be missing. I find it so hard to believe, yeah//
"It was an accident, something that never should have happened, but it was my fault."
"Heero..."
Heero stood and turned around. "I was careless. I let my emotions distract me from the mission. I didn't check my charges thoroughly enough, too busy thinking about earlier that day. I never should have..."
"Did you ever think that maybe more people would have died if it wasn't for what you did?"
The question lingered in the air between them, and Heero thought about it for a moment. "Only one of those lives touched me personally, but that's what makes it hurt so much."
"Maybe that's why it happened. You will never be able to forget, but maybe you're not supposed to."
//Unbelievable, unbelievable//
Heero considered that possibility. He had never looked at things from that point of view before; after all, being human was a confusing thing sometimes. Perhaps this had happened to make him realize that even though Duo was the one who had taught him how to live, it was life itself that he had to embrace, not because he had loved one person, but because he had to be able to love himself. He looked back at the tombstone and searched for the guilt he'd felt; for some reason, he only found an awareness that life was too precious to waste because we never know when it can be taken from us.
"Hai. Maybe you're right."
//You don't say that it's over, never thought this could die, but you speak without works, making me feel so damn good. Bye//
He felt reassuring arms enfold him in a warm embrace, and Heero realized how cold he had been. He had been so lost in memories that he hadn't realized that the rain was beating down on him, soaking him to the bone. It would feel good to leave this place, a resolution reached, a balance achieved.
//You don't say that it's over, never thought this could die, but you speak without works, making me feel so damn good//
He let himself enjoy the feeling of those arms for a moment before pulling away to look at the person who had been there for him through so much; of course, he'd been there for him as he'd faced his past on L2. The Maxwell Church ruins had not been easy to deal with. It had thrown them off-schedule, making it a year and a month since their vows.
Duo grinned. "Come on, koi. Let's get back to the hotel. There is a warm bath and a hot meal with our names on it."
Heero reached out his hand to touch Duo's cheek tenderly, his eyes shining with emotion. "Have I told you today that I love you?"
Duo's eyes softened, his grin turning into a loving smile. "Not in the past three hours."
//Making me feel so damn good. Bye//
Heero smiled. "I love you, Duo Maxwell."
Heero closed his eyes as Duo leaned forward to brush his lips softly against Heero's. He welcomed the arms that pulled him close as Duo deepened the kiss. When they finally pulled apart, Heero gazed into violet eyes that he would always lose himself in. When Duo spoke, it made Heero realize once again how incredibly blessed he was to have the other boy in his life.
"I love you, Heero Yuy, in this lifetime and beyond."
//Unbelievable, yeah, unbelievable//
Heero nodded then turned back toward the grave. Kneeling once more, he picked up the yellow flowers he had brought with him and placed them in the grass. He had dug the plot himself, burying the small furred- body that signified his guilt and failure so long ago. With one last look at the tombstone that read "Mary", he let the image of a little girl in a white dress float in his mind... then he let it go. He stood and turned to the violet-eyed boy waiting. The smile that greeted him made him forget the rain once more.
The End
