Duo finished typing his sentence before glancing over to double check a fact in his text book. Holding the book up he tilted it slightly to better catch the light from the laptop screen. He pondered for a while, tapping his finger against the page thoughtfully before grabbing a translucent adhesive strip to highlight the comment in question and going back to staring at what was slowly becoming the barest of bare bones of his latest assignment.

The song on his laptop changed and he paused for a second to identify the new one before continuing. It wasn't the music that he liked so much as the absence of quiet. It was soothing, distracting on a level that didn't interfere with his ability to concentrate on work.

He didn't really get much time nowadays to relax; little measures of solace were usually stolen during the day. This one moment being one of them. He'd fitted in his headphones and settled himself on the floor, kneeling on a cushion and working from the coffee table. The television was on mute, again company without companionship, just moving figures in his peripheral vision... comforting.

Deciding to take a short break from his work he leaned back against the sofa and let his head drop to rest on the leg there. It moved slightly and he turned, pulling one of the earphones from his ear.

"Hey," he whispered seeing Heero awake and looking slightly bleary. "Want me to warm up your hat again?"

The shake of Heero's head was minute and he shifted slightly before settling down again. Duo straightened the blanket and suppressed a smirk at the sight of Heero's hair sticking out wildly from underneath the woollen bobble hat.

Heero didn't get migraines often but when he did he'd seek out company, trailing down the stairs and curling up on the couch, face turned into the cushions. Duo didn't question it, it helped and that was all that mattered. He'd usually pull a sympathetic face, put the hat in the microwave, and draw the curtains, preparing himself for a 'quiet night in' in all senses of the phrase.

For some reason the feeling of binding heat usually eased the headache and they'd spent a few days designing and adapting an ordinary knitted hat into a heat pad. Heero had given up on removing the pompom from the top after it had magically sewn itself back on five times.

Duo's screensaver blinked on, blacking out the screen and removing the major light source in the room. He sighed at the tiny tickle of Heero's fingers in the hair just behind his ear and smiled.

The role of comforter and comfortee blurred more and more each day.

The End
