A Treize character study (serious)

A Dream Of Purgatory by Mobiusklein

Treize opened his eyes and gasped. It was that same dream again, always that same dream. He turned and saw that there was nobody in bed next to him. Of course, he thought, the person who would be there is gone and won't come back. That side of the bed would forever more be cold.

He got up and poured himself another cup of wine. He sighed and thought, The dream, it always begins the same way. Looking at the glass of red wine, he thought, It reminds of me of blood, the blood I've helped to spill. Sometimes, I feel like Faust, he thought. I've sold my soul for a beautiful vision. Will it be worth it?

He thought about how it began. He was led by his guide, an old but well-dressed butler. "Where are we going?" he'd ask as they walked through a hallway that echoed their steps.

It was frighteningly quiet as if it had been deserted.

"There are people you must meet." The butler then opened a door and said, "Please walk in."

He was in a large auditorium where thousands of soldiers were seated. The butler turned to him and said, "You must go up and speak."

"I have no speech to make."

"Do not worry, the speech is written on the podium. All you have to do is read it off."

"Why am I here?"

"You will see," the butler said, then he closed the door behind Treize, leaving him alone upon the stage.

Treize walked up to the podium and saw that the speech was not a speech, but a list of names. As he skimmed through them, he found that all the names were those of his men who'd died so far in the war under his leadership and as he was skimming through it, even more names magically appeared on the last page. However, he had the feeling that the names Wufei Chang and Zechs Marquise were not among them. He looked out at the audience and recognized some of the soldiers as the people who were named in the list. He looked at the title of the list and saw that it read, "The judges who will decide if Treize Khushrenada will ever reach Heaven."

It was always at this point he woke up, but every time he dreamed this dream, the auditorium got bigger with more and more people. I am continually made aware of the price of this war, he thought. It doesn't matter whether I'm asleep or awake. When my death does finally come, all I'll have to do is read that list once more and face whatever judgement comes. When it comes, I'll probably know the list by heart.

The End
