Warnings: I don't know that I would call this angst exactly, but it's not a chirpy thing.
Feedback: C&C
Notes: This is one of those strange short Peter Gabriel songs, entitled Lead A Normal Life. This one is from his third album (sometimes it's called Mercury, it's the one with his face half melted on the cover). The song is short and this ficlet is equally short.

Normal Life by babaca

[It's nice here with a view of the trees
Eating with a spoon
They don't give you knives
'Spect you watch those trees
Blowing in the breeze
We want to see you lead a normal life]

Duo really did marvel at how he could enjoy the peacefulness out here in the middle of nowhere. The huge oak trees seems so solid and ever present. Sitting on the veranda with his feet propped on a table he found his eyes closing, breathing in deeply the smells of nature.

"Duo?" Heero prompted, shaking Duo from his solitude.

Big blue eyes with flecks of purple opened to survey his visitor. "Heero! What a surprise!" the young man said, with a big smile. "Sit, take a load off."

Heero seemed to hesitate for a second before joining Duo on the swinging bench.

"What brings you here?" Duo asked, quietly surveying his friend. After the war, they had lost touch. It had been five years. Heero looked good. He must have grown a good five inches or so. He wasn't quite so wiry. The hair wasn't as wild anymore, but the look in his eyes remained as serious as ever.

"I ran into Quatre recently and he told me where you were," Heero said, with a strange relieved tone to his voice.

"So what have you been up to, Heero?" Duo smiled and asked conversationally.

"I've been in college. I'm working on a masters in engineering. What about ... nevermind," Heero stopped.

"What have I been doing?" Duo supplied. "You don't have to be shy. After the war, I stayed with Hilde for a while. Then I left her and everything and just started to drift." He looked over to see a strange look in Heero's eye. "Heero?"

"Why didn't you come to me for help? I would have helped you," Heero said miserably.

"It's okay, Heero. This is fine. I like it here. It's the peacefulness I've always desired. I'm not a danger to anyone. The grounds are lovely. It's what I needed. There's no one to blame for what's happened to me," Duo said with a smile and reached over to touch Heero's hand. He was proud he could do that. A year ago he would have not been able to do it.

"But Duo, all the years we fought together. You're my ... friend. I don't have too many of those you know. I'm saddened I couldn't have been there to help you."

Duo sighed. "Heero, it's not forever. I get stronger every day. Actually I'm sure they'll have to kick me out of this place. I really do like being here, you know. It's like having the sanctuary of the church like I did as a child. It's not a prison here, there is no stigma. I have problems and here those problems are being worked on. So skip the guilt trip and try to come by to visit more often," Duo chided.

Heero listened closely to the words and watched Duo's face even closer. He looked for hidden meanings but could find none. Visiting more often was certainly something he could do. "I will come more often, now that I know where you are."

"Good."

A man with a white coat approached to two men on the veranda. "I'm afraid visiting hours are over, sir."

Heero nodded and started to rise. Again, Duo's hand caught his.

"Don't be a stranger," Duo smiled, then he whispered, "If you see Trowa, tell him to keep sneaking in the jalapenos. The only bad thing about this place is the food. Jalapenos can certainly liven up a dish."

Heero stared back at Duo incredulously.

Duo rose and gave him a hug. "Until next time then?"

Heero smiled. "Yes. Next time."

Duo watched as his friend left, before turning his attention back to the scenery that lay before him. The people at this facility had been good to him. He wondered if they'd let him climb one of those oak trees.

Told you it was short (and a little weird)
