Hey all, here is the first part to the teaser I posted sometime last week. I know I have been really slacking on my writing but I have a reason. I am in a play that is taking up a lot of my time, and there is nothing I can do about it. I barely have enough time to check all me email let alone time to work on all of my stories. But, the good news is play is about over. So if things go well I should be writing a lot more very soon

Ok more AN but hey you will live, this part is kinda important. In this I decided that the guys were not randomly chosen, but actually had to go through training with other people and fought to gain the privilege to pilot. Michelle was one of the people who was trying to become a pilot......

Warnings: Heero angst, OOC, sort of original character...I think....*sweat*
Pairings: not right now, but 1x/2x1 eventually
Archive: GW Addiction, Darkflame's site and wherever else just tell me.....
Disclaimers: I don't own them, I do own the character that will be appearing later on in the story.

The First by Mistress

Part One

They were in the middle of a heated battle. Which means it was no time to get distracted, but Heero was distracted anyway. He kept picturing her face, remembering their talks, feeling her body close to his. It was the battle that was causing it, it was to similar to the one where she...where she died. Image after image popped into his head, unwelcome and unneeded. The Gundam stood still in the middle of the fire fight as the others protected him and kept screaming at him over the com link. Without even thinking about it he flipped the switch that controlled the com off and ignored all signs that the battle was raging outside. His head felt like it would explode with the force of the memories and the pain that those memories brought with them.

"Oh Michelle, how could I let you die?" he whispered as he curled into a tiny ball in the seat of the cockpit. He slowly pulled out an old and worn photograph. On it was a girl who looked about 12, with long brown hair and gleaming green eyes. She and the other figure, a young and smiling Heero Yuy were grinning at the camera like they had no worries and had not a care in the world. Heero stared at the picture as a solitary tear made it's way down his cheek. He put the picture away when it started to blur because of the tears that ran smoothly down his perfect face. Eventually he slipped into a dream filled sleep in which he was forced to relive that fateful day over and over. That was how his fellow pilots found him later, curled up and in a state of fitful dreaming.

"Heero what the hell was that!" Wufei ranted as he paced back and forth across the living room floor. He glared at the stoic pilot that had developed a sudden fascination with the floor.

"Wufei leave him alone!" Quatre barked. He could sense there was something seriously wrong with the pilot of Wing. Heero didn't respond to anyone, or anything. He just sat there in silence contemplating his thoughts. Duo stood in the doorway and watched the proceedings silently. He was very worried for the pilot, he never acted that way, hell he never acted any way but cold and distant. With a set face and a violet glare Duo stalked in and ordered everyone out, including Quatre.

"Duo, what are you doing?" Quatre whispered as he was forced out the door.

"Fixing this!" Duo proceeded to slam the door in the very surprised blonde's face. With a small sigh he made his way back to where Heero was still sitting silently on the couch.

"Heero, what happened? Why did you freak out in the middle of the battle?" he asked gently. Heero looked up at him with seemingly tear filled eyes and blinked. He had such a confused look in his eyes, that Duo fought to resist the urge to smile. Instead he sat down and looked Heero deeply in his eyes. In those never ending depths of blue he saw the one thing he thought he would never see in the perfect soldiers eyes, fear.

"Heero please tell me what went wrong, why did you stop fighting, please tell me!" but to Duo's great surprise he stood up, and the stone mask which he knew so well seemed to slip back into place.

"It was nothing..." he murmured as he turned to retreat back to his room. Duo watched Heero's back until it could no longer be seen. He sat back into the soft couch,

"Then why did it scare you so much?" he whispered to no one but the ghosts that plagued him.

Up in his room Heero locked the door and walk silently but determinedly to his bed. He reached under and pulled out a small box, no more then 8 by 10 by 5 inches, from it's hiding place between the boards. With shaking hands he sat on his bed and blew the dust off the well worn surface. He undid the ancient clasp and slowly opened the lid. Inside was plenty of pictures, but also a series of letters and a pair of earrings. Heero pulled out the first of the letters and sat back to read the writing of the person he knew and loved so well.

***Heero, 11-27-AC191

Even though you will never read this I still feel compelled to write it. This seems very silly when I write it but I'm sure I will one day cherish these letters. I watched you today as you finished your flight training, you are so much better then I. But I can't hold that against you, I could never hold anything against you. You look so graceful when you are piloting, it is your calling. I just know you will be chosen to be a pilot of one of the Gundams! Well, dinner is calling and you are getting impatient to eat, so I will let you go. Strange as that sounds.....

Love always, Michelle***

With a slight smile and a saddened sniff Heero carefully put that letter away and pulled out the next in the series.

***Heero, 12-24-AC191

Well, Christmas is tomorrow and you are right now tucked away in your room, hopefully wrapping presents. I know that is what you think I am doing too, but in truth I actually wrapped mine ages ago. I hope you will like your gift! You have no idea how hard it was to find the perfect gift for you. I had to search everywhere, and that was tough because we had no time to look, and when we did you were always around me. Not that I objected of course, but it still made it hard. I am looking at it right now, it is wrapped in the light green paper with the snowballs on it. Oh my! It is after 11:30pm I should go to bed. After all, Santa won't come if your awake! Sleep well......

Love always, Michelle***

Heero thought back to that Christmas. He had gotten her a pair of earrings that were gold and in the shape of a rose with wings. She had squealed and jumped with joy, and of course put them right in. She had never taken them out since, not until the day of her....her...her mission. She had given him a journal, and on the inside of the first page she had written him a poem and pasted a picture there. That picture was the one that Heero now carried with him everywhere, the one of the two of them standing in the sun together. With a slight smile a single tear slipped down his face as he reached for the third letter.

***Heero, 1-04-AC192

I am so nervous. I cannot believe how calm you are about all of this. I mean what will happen tomorrow will decide the rest of our lives for us. Yet you seem unaffected. I on the other hand cannot sleep, eat or even think straight. We have been training for this for months yet I cannot see how it is enough to see who are the best pilots. I know you will be chosen but I can't believe that they would chose me. I need some sleep, what happens tomorrow will happen, I can only hope what happens is the right thing.

Love always, Michelle***

That day he also remembered well. The day he was chosen to be the pilot of Wing, and she wasn't chosen at all. The next letter was the one he dreaded the most, because it was the last. With shaking hands and a shallow breath he picked up the final letter and began to read.

***Heero, 1-05-AC192

Congratulations my dear friend. You deserved more then anything to fight for the colonies. I know that you as well as the others will do a great job and finally bring peace to us all. But I have to do something. Please forgive me, I never meant to hurt you, but they said I wasn't willing to sacrifice everything for the colonies, so now I must do just that. I want you to know I love you and believe in you completely. Never forget me, and never lose your heart and soul. Our friendship is stronger then anything..... even death, good-bye my love. Michelle***

At those finally words of love and good-bye Heero broke down. His sobs echoed throughout out the safe house. He eventually cried himself into a dreamless sleep.
