Title: When All The Laughter Dies In Sorrow 14/?

Author: KwyckSylver kwycksylver@yahoo.com

Rating: NC-17 overall

Pairings: 1x2x1, 6+2 with an eventual 6x5, 13+11, and finally 3+4 once they decide to show up.

Warnings: Some OOC-ness from the characters since their histories are different than in the series (i.e. here Heero and Duo were raised by loving parents), but I am trying to keep them as IC as possible.

Spoilers: There are no spoilers as this fic is AU. There will be angst, humor, betrayal, skullduggery, romance, sex, excitement and adventure.

The setup for the fic, as well as the poem I borrowed the title from, can be found at the beginning of the first two chapters. The basic premise; what if Earth and the Colonies were at odds with each other for reasons other than in the series?

Part 14

Duo picked up the picture out of the printer tray, the same picture Heero was staring at on the computer screen.

"Yeah, that's Zechs," Duo confirmed, "you know, his mom's kinda pretty. Gotta admit though it's weird that . . ."

"Hm," Heero grumbled, snatching the paper out of Duo's hand and wadding it tightly into a ball before throwing it into the wastebasket.

"I'm not attracted to him," Duo said.

"Did I say anything?," Heero asked.

"You didn't have to," Duo picked up the ball of paper out of the trash and rolled it between his fingers, "you crumpled it so tight you almost turned it back into wood."

"You did go to bed with him," Heero sulked.

"Like I told you, I'm a moron," Duo said, "and I regret doing it."

"I know I don't have a right to be jealous," Heero admitted.

"I'm not interested in him," Duo repeated.

"But after the other night, I thought we had kind of an understanding. I guess I was wrong," Heero hung his head but watched Duo out of the corner of his eye, waiting for his reaction.

Exasperated, Duo ran his hand through his hair, pushing his bangs out of his eyes, "You know Yuy you're a little dense sometimes. Are you even listening to me? How could I possibly be attracted to him? Huh? Aside from all the other things wrong with him, he's not you, he's nothing like you and he never will be. He's no competition, I'm not interested. Get it?"

Smiling, Heero raised his head, "I was just waiting to hear you say it".

He pulled Duo down on his lap and wrapped his arms around him, holding on for dear life. Duo straddled him as he slipped his arms underneath Heero's, grabbing the back of the chair. Heero began nuzzling Duo's ear and the side of his cheek. He closed his eyes and hungrily breathed in every delicious scent that was Duo. Heero's nimble fingers quickly unfastened buttons and began caressing the smooth skin underneath Duo's shirt. Duo tilted his head back, allowing Heero easy access to his neck as he pressed his hands against Heero's chest. Duo could feel Heero's body growing hot underneath his clothing. Heero continued nuzzling and began nipping and teasing with tongue and teeth, working his way towards Duo's mouth while Duo stripped him of his top.

"Kiss me, Heero," Duo demanded, "you know you want to."

"I've been waiting for you to say that too," Heero moaned before crushing Duo's lips to his.

Treize yawned as he set aside the report he was reading then looked at his watch and frowned. The medical examiner should have reported back already. As if on cue, Treize's secretary buzzed him, he had a call holding on line three.

"You can forget about that funeral," Zechs said.

"Most people start a phone conversation with hello," Treize said, "may I ask why? You woke me up in the middle of the night, out of a sound sleep mind you, demanding one. 'It's the right thing to do,' you said. What happened to change your mind?" Treize asked.

"You were right, I've been too soft on him. I let my personal desires get in the way of this assignment. I won't make that mistake again," Zechs vowed.

"He told you to go screw yourself, huh?" Treize's question was answered with silence, "I've never seen you give up so easy on something you want. What gives? And why are you talking through your nose? Are you catching a cold?"

"I had a minor run in with a fist," Zechs said testily, "but it's nothing I can't handle. Duo's been playing us for suckers. I think he knows who the Colony agent is and he's been keeping his mouth shut about it."

Treize listened quietly, holding back the urge to laugh while Zechs told him what had happened. But after he hung up, he could hold it no longer. Things were working out beautifully. The boy being uncooperative from the start plus his disinterest in Zechs or joining Oz was going to make things even easier for Treize. There would be no arguments from Zechs now.

Wufei called Heero's house and let the phone ring and ring, but there was no answer. He finally gave up, hanging the receiver back on the cradle. Obviously they'd gone to get something to eat. He was about to punch in his home number to check his voice mail when the phone rang.

"Field house, Coach Chang speaking," he answered.

"Hello Mr. Chang. This is Dr. Walker, Roger's father."

"Hello Dr. Walker, how can I help you today?" Wufei asked.

"I shouldn't be doing this, as it involves one of my patients, but I think I should give you a head's up on a potential problem," the doctor answered, "I examined a young man a little while ago. He had been hit in the face by one of the football players."

"How do you know it was one of my guys that hit him? Did he say?" Wufei asked.

"No, but whoever hit him was wearing one of the rings the football players wear. It left its imprint on his face. I thought you should know in case this guy decides to press charges."

Wufei bit his lip to keep himself from uttering a few colorful phrases. With what was going on with Duo right now, he didn't need more problems.

"I know you've told me more than you should have already, and I know you can't tell me his name but would you mind telling me what this guy looks like? I want to be prepared in case he shows up at school to cause trouble."

"The guy won't be hard to spot, I can tell you that much," Dr. Walker said, "just keep your eyes out for a tall guy with long blond hair. Well, I've got to go now, I have a couple of people waiting to see me."

"Thank you Dr. Walker, I really appreciate this," Wufei said, biting his lip even harder.

"No, thank you Coach. Without your help, Roger wouldn't have gotten accepted at the university. I owe you. Goodbye."

"Goodbye," Wufei picked up a pencil off his desk and snapped it in two between his fingers, "Heero, do you have any idea how badly you've screwed up?" he muttered.

"When will it be ready for testing?" Treize asked.

"In a few days, we just need to do some fine tuning," the voice on the phone sounded old but strong.

"Good. What about the leakage problem?"

"We're still registering some, but not enough to hurt unless there's long term exposure."

"Glad to hear it because I've found you a test pilot."

"We agreed, remote testing until we know it's safe," the voice reminded Treize.

"I've found someone expendable," Treize said, "in fact, very expendable."

"He's willing to take the risk?" the voice had an excited eagerness to it.

Treize smiled, he knew the old coot preferred a human to test the machine, "he doesn't know he's volunteered yet. Keep me posted," Treize disconnected the call.

"Young fool. But what can you expect from such arrogance," the old man said after hanging up the phone. He turned and addressed his assistant, "things are starting to slip into place now. Duo Maxwell will be joining us soon."
