"Get out of there, you stupid cat!"

The small tabby ignored the loud shrill and continued his ministrations. Long strokes of his tongue combed and cleaned the chestnut fur on his paws. He wasn't moving until he was finished making himself presentable.

"Duo, out!" The honey blonde woman picked up the cat bed and dumped its occupant onto the floor. "Bad cat, you know that's Heero's bed."

Duo's bright blue eyes took one disinterested look at the human before he sauntered off. Silly human, of course he knew it was Heero's bed, it was why he was laying in it. The soft cushions were saturated with Heero's glorious scent.

"Why do you keep doing things to annoy her?" Heero meowed as Duo joined him at their dinner dish, "It's probably why she doesn't like you."

"Ah, salmon today," Duo purred, digging in and ignoring the Japanese bobtail's comments.

"Go easy on that and make sure you eat some of the dry stuff," the bobtail reminded him, "She's still upset with you for puking in her shoe."

"It's not my fault if I have a sensitive stomach," the tabby sniffed, "Besides, she should be happy it wasn't the carpet."

"True," the bobtail agreed as he rubbed his face against Duo's, "But humans never think of the bigger picture."

"You've got that right." Duo said as he pounced on the other kitten and began cleaning his ears. Their human had banished him to the laundry room for two days because he'd knocked a frame off the table and chewed up the photograph it contained. He thought he'd done her a big favor. It was obvious the messy furred human in the picture with her did not like her touching him.

The two kittens were sitting on the window sill, watching some birds in a tree with keen interest. If only their human would let them outside, they had some hunting instincts that needed honing. Heero wanted those birds so bad, he could already taste them. He scratched at the invisible barrier that separated him from his prey and meowed, his frustration was building. He began to pace back and forth, sidestepping the spot Duo was claiming as his. He had to do something to get outside but what? Heero eyed the drapes, looking at them from top to bottom and back to the top again. Maybe the way outside was up.

"See you later," he told Duo as he bared his claws and jumped onto the thick brocaded material. He began climbing, tearing small snags into the drapes as he did so. He paused when he heard the familiar clack, clack of his human's shoes as she entered the room. If he stayed perfectly still, maybe she wouldn't notice him.

"You little scamp," she said adoringly, "That's what the scratching post is for." She grasped him gingerly around his middle and removed his claws, one by one, from the drapes. She sat on the sofa, laying him in her lap and began stroking him down his back and scratching him under his chin. Heero couldn't help but purr, it felt so good.

"Traitor," Duo teased from the window sill. Ok so he felt maybe a little jealousy, she never scratched or petted him, not since the first day she brought them home from the pet shop. Instead she was always booting him out of the way with her foot.

"What are *you* looking at, you ugly cat," the human almost hissed at Duo. Heero dug his claws into her thigh. Duo couldn't defend himself against her harsh words, but he could.

"Ow, you silly kitty. Stop kneading my leg." She held Heero up to her face, snuggling her nose into his soft coat, "That's my poor little snookie-wookums. You know mommy is looking for a new home for Duo, don't you?"

Relena had never wanted two cats, she only wanted one. It was love at first sight when she'd spied the little Japanese bobtail kitten in the pet store window. She absolutely had to take him home with her. She'd entered the store to purchase him and that was when she found out the bobtail and the tabby were inseparable. If she wanted one, the store owner had told her, she had to take the other. It was the only way he'd sell either one of them.

Now she was stuck with one cat too many, and none of her friends would take the little tabby off her hands. It wouldn't be so bad, she might have even taken a liking to him, if he hadn't set out from day one to destroy her home. Of course she didn't know Heero was responsible for half the damage she was blaming on Duo.

Maybe he'd calm down if she had him fixed and declawed. Then she wouldn't have to worry about Heero learning bad habits from him, like climbing her very expensive curtains. And maybe it would be easier to give him away.

It was while she was on the phone with the vet's office that his assistant convinced her it was a good time to have Heero neutered too.

Duo mewed pitifully when the vet's assistant took him out of the cage. Heero tried his best to protect his friend but to no avail, the human was wearing gloves. He and Heero had been taken to this unfamiliar place by their human and left there. The air was full of strange smells and those idiot dogs had barked most of the night, keeping Heero and him awake. The only comfort he took the whole time they'd been there was that Heero and he were together.

The gloved human stroked and petted his head and spoke soothing words while she carried him to a small room and placed him on a shiny but cold table. After a few more pats and soothing words, Duo felt the prick of a metal claw. He started to feel very sleepy and wanted to curl up for a nice nap, but the gloved human wouldn't let him get comfortable. He was almost fully asleep when another human entered the small room. The last words he heard was "Hand me the scalpel."

Duo awoke with a start. He was soaked with sweat and his whole body was trembling. He grabbed for his balls and thanked every deity he could think of when he felt they were still there. Shit, that was the most horrifying nightmare he'd ever had.

He raised up and sat on the edge of the bed, feeling movement coming from the opposite side as well. He looked over his shoulder to find Heero sitting up as well, a grateful sigh escaping his lips.

"I'm not taking that job Relena offered," their voices echoed.
