It's not much, a very tiny ficlet inspired by watching The Fugitive for the nth time, but hey, I finally wrote something.
Duo ran as fast as his legs could carry him, dodging trees and bushes, trying hard not to get caught. He tripped over an exposed root and fell, tearing his pants and scraping one knee. But he persisted and got up, brushing the dirt away and winced, his torn flesh stinging from the cut.
He heard the soft sound of footfalls against loose ground and dived under a bush, rolling himself into a tight ball until the only sounds he heard were his own ragged breaths. He crawled out, his sleeve snagged by a sharp branch. Clumsy from fear and frustration, he fought with it, delaying his release.
He crouched low, scanning the open stretch of ground ahead of him. It seemed clear, so he chanced it and sprinted across to the next copse of trees and brush. Once again he crawled underneath, worming his way deeper into the foliage. He heard the babble of water and emerged next to a clean, clear stream. He lay down, lowering his head towards the stream as he dipped his cupped hand into the water and sipped, soothing his parched throat.
He scrambled back underneath the brush and froze as he heard the murmur of voices close by. His leg twitched as he felt something crawl inside his pants. His hand clamped over his mouth, muffling a yelp as he felt a bite on his leg. He rolled over, sat up and pulled his pants leg up. He felt a hard round knot where he'd been bitten and pulled off a tick. Sticky blood squirted between his thumb and finger as he squashed it. He wiped the blood off on his shirt before he crawled out into the light, ready to make another run.
He spun as he heard the snap of twigs to his side and came face to face with his enemy. Dark blue eyes, filled with determination, shot a look that pierced right through him. A grim mouth pulled into a lopsided smirk as a hand reached out and grabbed him.
"Tag, you're it," Heero said.
