Disclaimer: I don't own nor do I make any sort of profit from Gundam Wing or its characters. It is the property of Bandai, Sunrise and Sotsu Agency. I also apologize profusely to Bullfinch, who is probably spinning like a whirling dervish in his grave because of the way I'm butchering Greek mythology.
Title: Cupid's Breath, part 3
Author: KwyckSylverNotes: I know each part is small and once the whole fic is finished it could just be one long oneshot. But when the writing ends up at a good stopping place, I am not going to overrule what the fic wants. It wants part 3 to end where it did, so it did.
Heero turned off the television before he stood, stretched and yawned. He then gathered up his papers and his book from the sofa and walke! d to his bedroom. Unknown to him, he had a small hitchhiker riding on his shoulder.
Duo launched himself off Heero's shoulder, opened his wings and glided downward. He landed on a pillow as Heero sat down on the edge of his bed. Duo flopped back on the pillow with his arms folded behind his head, cursing Aphrodite for not allowing her cupids the pleasures of the flesh as well as the heart while he watched Heero undress.
He wanted to know what love felt like in all it's wonderous pain and glorious happiness. For a cupid, the best comparison he could think of how love felt was the way humans enjoyed a cup of hot chocolate while wrapped in a warm blanket in front of a roaring fire on a cold night.
He wondered what she'd do to him if he went over her head and petitioned Zeus to become human. He shuddered at the possibilities.
Eros entered Aphrodite's chambers and stretched out on her bed.
"Tell me a story, Mother," he said a! s he reached over to the bowl of grapes sitting on the small table next to it.
"If you want a story, I would suggest you seek out Apollo," she responded as she gently slapped his hand away from the grapes. "And get out of my bed."
Eros moved from the bed to sit on a the cushioned bench near the large portica that offered a magificent view of the cloud covered mountains that cloistered Olympus, keeping it hidden from the world.
"I doubt Apollo knows this story," he answered. "I don't think anyone does except you, the Fates and perhaps Zeus."
Aphrodite raised an eyebrow at her son and chuckled, "You make it sound as if we're keeping a secret."
"Aren't you?" he asked, "I know we are not to use our influence on the human but I don't understand why."
"That's because it is none of your business," Aphrodite smiled sweetly at her son as she reached down and tweaked his nose.
Eros sighed and rolled his eyes, whenever she treated him! like a child, it usually meant she was hiding something. He arose from his seat, "I will just go ask the old crones then," he threatened.
"Leave them be. They have no time to weave stories for you," Aphrodite responded tersely.
"Oh, I think they will. They love me, I'm their favorite," Eros gave his mother a smug look then dodged the pillow she threw at him as he ducked out of her chambers.
Aphrodite shook her head and her bright smile slowly turned into a frown. Favorite indeed.
"What are you doing here, Cupid?" Morpheus asked as he nudged Duo awake.
"Reconnaisance gone bad, I had a little problem with a cat." Duo snorted as he extended his wing, showing off his wounds.
"I don't usually give animals dreams, but I can make the offending feline a one about giant mice, if you like," Morpheus offered with a chuckle. "I can also send you back to Olympus since you can't return on your own until you heal."
D! uo shook his head, declining both of his offers. "I'm sure I'll get summoned as soon as someone realizes I'm missing."
"What dreams do you give him?" he then asked, casually changing the subject as he nodded his head toward the sleeping human.
"I don't have to most of the time," Morpheus answered. "He has a pretty active subconscious. I do check in on him once in a while to make sure he does, just as I do with all the humans. They need to dream whether they do it on their own or if they're induced by me."
"Do you ever peek at his?" Duo asked, hopefully.
Morpheus shook his head, "I don't have time, in fact I need to go now. I've spent too long here as it is."
Duo reached out and touched the shadowy figure on his arm, "Please?"
"Why are you so interested in what he dreams?" Morpheus (1) asked.
Duo crooked his finger and wiggled it at Morpheus, bidding him to come closer, "He has an empty heart, how can I fill it if I don't know w! ho he desires?" the cupid whispered as if he were afraid he'd be overheard.
"That's a fair enough request. Let it not be said that Morpheus, the God of Dreams, was instrument in keeping one from coming true. Please give me your hand," Morpheus took the cupid's small hand in his then laid his other hand on Heero's head.
"Close your eyes and empty your mind, in a few moments we'll see what he's dreaming of," he instructed.
"That's it?" Eros's voice yelped about two octaves higher than normal. "That's the big mystery?"
"Were you expecting a great conspiracy?" Klotho asked as she combed and spun new thread, "Some great and nefarious deed that needed to be undone?"
"The mysteries of life usually have simple answers," Atropos added as she wove the thread into patterns that were the maps of human destiny.
"And this is one of the simplest," Lachesis concluded, snipping a thread after the cloth was finished.
"! Why wouldn't my mother tell me this?" Eros asked, irritated.
"Because it wasn't her lot to do so, only we have that right to reveal the future. Now please leave us be and leave them to their destiny," the Fates(2) answered in harmony as they began combing, spinning, weaving and cutting. It was was their own fate to do so until the last thread was cut.
