"The Counseling Session" by KwyckSylver

Part 1

"Thanks, Doc, for traveling out here and meeting me like this. It would be difficult to meet in your office, I really appreciate it."

"No problem at all, since you paid me in advance for your sessions and my expenses."

"May I offer you something? Are you hungry or thirsty?"

"No, I'm fine. Now let's get started. You told me you have been having relationship problems with your partner and haven't been able to work them out on your own. That you felt some counseling was in order, correct?"

"Correct."

"So, what kind of problems are you having?"

"Well, I just can't get him to open up to me anymore. He's just so cold, silent and distant. He won't say a word and acts like I don't even exist anymore. He's always been the 'silent type', but lately he just sits there like a lump whenever I'm around. I don't know what I've done to deserve this. It's really starting to give me an insecurity complex."

"We'll see what we can do. I can't promise any instant results. Problems in a relationship don't develop overnight and working them out won't happen that way either."

"Tell me, does he act passive-aggressive to you? In other words, he won't come right out and tell you what's wrong or why he is upset but takes it out on you through his actions or in subtle little ways?"

"That's exactly it, Doc. That's exactly what he is doing and he is driving me nuts."

"Has your partner agreed to these sessions? It won't do any good if he is unwilling to cooperate, may even make things worse if it angers or upsets him or if he refuses to admit or believe there is a problem."

"Oh, he'll cooperate if he knows what's good for him, Doc, I'll see to it he does."

"Good, let's get started then. Why don't you go get him?"

"It would be better if we go to him."

"Very well, let's go then."

They walked down to the hold, in Howard's ship. It was dark, very dark, it was hard to see. Gradually the psychologist could make out a dim form in the darkness, as he got closer, his eyes opened wide. In front of him was the biggest mobile suit he had ever seen, especially since it was also the first he had ever seen this close.

"Doc.", Duo said, "Let me introduce you to Deathscythe."

"THIS is the 'partner' you are having 'relationship' problems with?" the doctor asked incredulously.

"Yeah, Doc. Deathscythe and I go way back. He used to talk to me, but now complete silence." Duo said sadly.

"And just how long HAS he been talking to you?" asked the doctor.

"Ever since I got him."

"And when was that?"

"When I was about 8 years old."

"And how old are you now?"

"Fifteen."

The doctor started laughing. "If you hadn't paid me so much money to come out here, I'd think this was some very elaborate, very strange joke. But son, I can tell you why 'Deathscythe' won't talk to you anymore."

"Why, Doc?" Duo asked with much interest.

"You're growing up, son, maturing. At one time, Deathscythe filled a much needed void, he was your 'invisible' friend. Most children at that age have one, and just like those other children, you have outgrown the need for your 'friend'.

"I was hoping you'd understand, you're supposed to be the top man in your field. Every other doctor I've talked to told me the same thing."

Duo walked off in a huff. "Psychologists.", he muttered. "Don't know a damned thing."

He left the doctor standing there alone, amused and bewildered. The doctor watched him storm off, in a few seconds Duo was out of sight. "Odd boy", he mused.

Just then, the doctor heard a noise behind him. He turned toward the source of the noise. He almost fainted. Deathscythe was sitting up.

"What was that little weasel saying about me?" Deathscythe demanded to know.
