Author's note:

This is an alternating universe GW fan fiction and my first attempt on GW fan fiction. Some characters rolled in different attitude.

Life's Sonatine

Finale

Duo Maxwell walked feebly on the garden. The garden was big and green. The cherry blossom trees bloomed beautifully, yet somehow he didn't notice. His mind was too occupied with musings.

Okay…. This ain't your fault. You didn't ask him to fall in love with you. You never ask and you'll never. So… so….

….

Duo whined. "GAAAH!! This is too complicated!"

"What is?" A head popped down from one of the trees.

Duo jumped. "Hilde!! What the Hell are you doing up there?"

Hilde Schbeiker giggled. "Just feeling like too." She pulled herself up and jumped off the tree into Duo's awaiting hands. "You look like shit." She ruffled his hair.

"Now where did you learn such a language?" Duo pretended to be annoyed.

The girl giggled loudly. She ruffled his hair again and asked. "So?"

Duo sighed and looked up to the blue sky. "Hilde," he said eventually. "What do you think about shonen-ai?"

Hilde blinked. She blinked again. And again. Finally she burst out laughter. Duo looked pretty annoyed. "Hey, I'm serious!"

Hilde stopped laughing and blinked, seeing Duo's unusual serious expression. The girl puckered her lips and scratched her hair. "Well, you really want to know?"

Duo nodded.

"Well…." She cocked her head. "I think…. Well, some people think it sucks, immoral, horrifying, etc, blah blah blah."

"What do you think?"

"Well…. I think it's okay. It's not a problem if both were male, it's love nevertheless, albeit I despise those who deal with it for the name of lust. Love and lust are only one step away but they are different. Because love is a sacral thing which has to be kept clean." The girl gazed away. "Love is something we have to deal with heart, not only with your you-know-what."

Duo snickered. "What?"

Hilde rolled her eyes. "You know! That! Between your thighs!"

Duo laughed. He put the girl down and gave her a little peck on the forehead. "Thanks, Hilde." He walked out the garden.

"Oi, Duo!" She called behind him.

"What?"

She beamed. "It's about that Japanese, isn't it?"

He rose an eyebrow. "How did you know?"

"I know jealousy when I see it."

"Oh." Duo grinned.

"Good luck for you, babe!!" Hilde waved her hands. Duo waved back grinning.

"He WHAAAAAAAATTTT?!!!" Duo screamed.

"He did." Trowa Barton replaced the cold compress on his blackened left eye with a new one.

"He's crazy!!" Duo walked back and forth. "Plain stupidity!!" He cried out.

"After knocking Trowa out, Heero took a jeep and left." Quatre Winner explained miserably.

"He must be heading to the Fed base to get his Gundam back alone." Duo muttered. "He's going to kill himself along with his Gundam."

"We'll have to save him." Trowa stated calmly. "But we need a cold-headed pilot, not a hot-tempered psychopath, so sit down and cool yourself down, Duo."

"Okay, okay." He sat down and took a deep breath. "I'm cool already. Can we go now?"

Trowa stood up and walked to the hangar. "I'll prepare Heavyarms, and Sandrock. As for Duo, I'll prepare Deathscythe Hell."

Heero Yuy swerved the jeep to avoid the bullet rain aimed to him. He cursed as some of the bullets hit the jeep. He jumped off the jeep right before it exploded. He ran to the largest building, heading to the main laboratory. He remembered the way in as his memory visualized him the building's blue print he got from hacking into the system.

Heero heard a shot and suddenly his body felt as if it was inflamed. He dropped himself to the floor rolling on his sides and shot back to the snipers behind him. His bullets on their heads killed them instantly. He cursed silently as he saw a dark red spot on his abdomen diffused wider through his green tanktop. He stood up heavily and continued running to the lab to take his Gundam back. However, after a few steps, his limb refused to walk farther. He cursed again. Running into a lavatory, he shot open a ventilation shaft and crawled in.

The small passage was like a frustrating maze one could get lost easily. Heero stopped in one of the junction, breathing in rage. I'm not going to pass out…. Not before I get my Gundam back….

For the first time, his body refused to obey his order. His supporting arms trembled and collapsed, failed to sustain his body weight. One name registered in his mind before he passed out.

Duo….

"Heero?"

Duo twitched. He thought he heard Heero calling out his name. Cold sweat formed on his scalp. He moved his right hand, making a path of cross, and tightened both hands, praying.

Our Father who art in Heaven... I know I'm a sinner. I know I've been killing people these last three years. And I know it has been a long time before I come back here in front of you, begging for your mercy. I know I'm no good in front of you. I don't even remember the prayers they taught me when I was a boy.

But please…. Just for once….

Please… don't let the damned Japanese die….

Amen….

Quatre saw Duo's prayer through his monitor. He smiled bitterly. He prayed as well, in his own religion way.

Allah, Ar-rahman Ar-rahiim…. Please give us the strength to survive this mission. Give us the strength to save our dear friend. I know we might have not live in your path. Nevertheless, you are the only one to turn to when we need help.

Amin… yaa rabbal 'alamiin….

Trowa leaned back to the seat for the last time. One minute to the appointed time.

Thirty seconds….

Five… four… three… two… one….

Duo pulled the trigger.

Heero woke up abruptly to the sound of explosion. Funny… he didn't remember planting bombs.

The room under him seemed to be a meeting hall full of soldiers. He could hear the speakers yelling out. "Red alert! Red alert! Three MS Gundams are attacking the base!! Battle station, on the double!"

Heero froze. Three Gundams…?

The faces of his best friends passed on his mind.

…He's your dad's new technician and MS pilot.

Not very new, Duo, since I started to join the project six years ago….

The tall young man in turtleneck. Trowa…

…My father had told me about it and literally trained me how to pilot an MS for the project….

The kind hearted Arabian. Quatre…

A cheeky grinning face lapsed into his mind, setting him up bolt.

DUO!!!

The base was full in fire. Deathscythe Hell stormed in to the largest building, breaking the wall.

"Duo! You're going to kill everything inside!" Quatre said through the intercom.

"I just wanna find where they hide Wing Zero!" Duo retorted.

"But Heero might be in there somewhere." Trowa said casually. Duo gasped. Trowa shook his head grimly. "I've told you to cool your head first."

Quatre interrupted. "Hey, does Wing Zero has a horning device on it?"

Duo answered excitedly changing his tracking device's frequency. "Quatre, you smart ass! Good idea!! The frequency is in channel 0…. I GOT IT!!"

"Let's go for it!"

My Wing Zero….

Heero managed to get himself to the main laboratory half soaked with blood. His blood and his enemies'. He burst into the laboratory, surprising a whole bunch of scientist who was analyzing his Gundam. He shot them all dead.

He stumbled toward, empty Prussian blue eyes fixed on his Gundam. He climbed, somehow managed to get into the cockpit. He closed the cockpit and leaned against the familiar seat. His eyes gazed in search. They fixed on a familiar button.

Heero Yuy smiled softly as he took the button he had been eager to push but had always failed. This time he wouldn't fail.

Sayonara, Wing Zero….

Sayonara, mina…. Mata makai ni….

Omae mo… Duo….

He pushed the button.

There was a huge explosion.

"What's that?" Trowa turned to the direction.

Quatre exclaimed. "It comes from where Wing Zero is!!"

Duo screamed. "HEEROOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!"

…I'm dead…. I pushed the self-destruct button and my Wing Zero exploded…. Strange…. I always thought that death would be painless…. So why does it hurt so much?

Heero opened his eyes. All that he saw was blackness.

See? I'm dead! But my hand is bleeding…. How can that be?

He lifted up his head, grimacing at the pain. He looked around. The laboratory was a Hell. Fire and ashes everywhere. The smell of burning fleshes….

The blackness in front of him was a big opening of the Earth. An unpredictable depth of an abyss.

Looks like the gateway to Hell. Should I jump into it?

He pushed his body up with his arms, surprisingly not bothered by the sudden pain on his leg.

Must be a fracture. Who cares anyway?

He heard somebody calling his name. He shook his head ignoring the voice. Suddenly the voice became clear behind him.

"Heero?"

He turned around to see the Deathscythe pilot standing five meters away from him. Duo gave him a relieved look. He turned his face away and flung forward.

He heard the American screamed. And suddenly he felt like his arm joint going to rip apart by sudden pulling on his right hand.

Duo had caught his hand right before he lost in the deep ravine. His body was now hanging on the edge, supported only by Duo's both hands.

"Heero!! Damn it! What did you that for?" He cursed. "Gimmie your hand!!"

Heero didn't say anything. He just hung there limply without any effort to save himself from the doom waiting down there.

"Heero?"

"Let me go." Suddenly he said, giving the other pilot a shock.

"What?!"

"I said, let me go."

Duo clenched his teeth. "Hell no! I'm not letting you go! Just gimmie your damn hand!"

"Why don't you just let me go?" Heero's voice was shaky. "You've given me a lot of trouble already. Can't you just stop bothering me?"

Duo narrowed his eyes. "If this is what you call bothering, then I'll bother you forever. Even to Hell."

"Why?"

"Because if you made me lose your hand, I'd jump in there as well."

This time Heero looked up into his eyes. The violet eyes were sad.

"Don't you understand, Heero? I don't want you to die. I want you to be with me, forever. I let you go seven years ago and it took me four years… four damned years to realize that ever since you had gone, I was loosing a piece of my heart each day and one day I woke up feeling empty, aching for someone. And that some one is you."

Heero stared at him wide eyed.

"So I took my Deathscythe and went off, looking for you. Three years I searched, tracking every sign of you in every colony. Sometimes I was so close, but you've gone already. It drove me insane, Heero."

"Now you are here and I'm supposed to let you go again?" Duo smirked. "No way, Heero. No way."

Heero trembled, his eyes stung, threatening to release a tear. "Why?" His voice was timid, seeming unable to believe.

Duo smiled softly. "You really don't understand it? Heero?"

"I love you, Heero. That's why. I love you and I don't want to lose you again."

"But… but… you don't seem to…." Heero stammered.

Unexpectedly Duo chuckled. "Give me your hand, Heero. Come back here and I'll tell you everything."

Heero, too dazed to actually do anything, dumbly lifted his other hand and grasped Duo's awaiting hand. Duo pulled him out the abyss with hard effort. After both of them were on the proper ground, Duo noticed the injuries on Heero's leg and abdomen. As he examined them, he continued his promised words.

"I was hiding it from you. Yes, I was. I was too afraid to actually tell you about my feeling, afraid that you would run away from me, even afraid to let anyone know because I was afraid that anyone would despise me for having this kind of feeling to you. So I pretended to be your best friend, just to be on your side." He smiled bitterly. "I was such a coward, wasn't I?"

"But… but… what about Hilde?"

Duo blinked. "Hilde?"

"Yeah." Heero nodded. "Hilde."

"So she was right about that jealousy thing." Duo muttered to himself before he broke into laughter. Heero glared at him looking annoyed. Duo took out a large handkerchief out of his pocket. "Open your tanktop."

"Answer my question first."

Duo gave him a look. He muffled his laugh. "Hilde, huh? She's a mere friend."

Heero stared at him doubtfully.

"Heero." Duo grinned. "Hilde is Quatre's girlfriend."

Heero blinked. He blinked again.

"You can ask him if you don't believe me."

Heero blinked again. Suddenly heat crept to his face furiously.

Duo laughed. "Now open your tanktop." He ordered.

Heero obeyed.

"Okay," Duo cleaned the injury on the abdomen with the handkerchief. "The bleeding has stopped, but we have to get you to a doctor." He fixed the broken leg with some sticks he found and the bloody handkerchief. He stood up and helped the Japanese to get up.

"…Duo?" Heero suddenly said. "Where's the Feds? I don't see any of them."

Duo shrugged. "I guess you killed half of them with your explosion and scared away half the other."

"I wonder why I didn't get killed myself…. I was inside Wing Zero, I pressed the button with my own fingers."

Duo smiled gently. "I think it's because God blesses you."

Heero looked up to him. "You think so?"

"Definitely…" He said as he lowered himself to kiss the surprised Japanese pilot on the lips.

"Looks like the good guys won again." Quatre smiled.

Trowa chuckled.

"I wasn't surprised when you decided to stay and let them solve their problem." The Arabian pilot said happily. "I know you are a good man."

Trowa was slightly taken aback. "Why, Quatre. You knew all the time?"

Quatre chuckled. "You think I'm that oblivious? Trowa, I know everything happens in my household. My eyes are everywhere and so are my ears."

"You're not as innocent as you seem to be, huh?"

"I was innocent seven years ago, but then again, everyone grows up, right?"

"You bet…."
