NOTE: It's Christmas in the middle of the war and Duo feels sad. His dear friend Quatre recommends they go shopping for their friends and lovers. What will they buy and will Quatre's efforts help make Duo's Christmas merry?
//someone's thoughts//
There were times when Quatre Raberba Winner truly wished he understood his friend Duo Maxwell better, but some things just weren't meant to be without sacrifice.
Duo sat staring out the window at the woods surrounding this particular Winner property located in the still rural East Coast area of what had once been the US. He sighed heavily and began to sing softly to himself:
I'm dreaming of a white Christmas,
Just like the ones I used to know.
Where the tree tops glistened,
And children listened
To hear sleigh bells in the snow.
It was a haunting tune and combined with the look of endless sadness on his face, anyone who knew him would have recognized the sorrow in the violet eyes. Overall, the scene nearly broke Quatre's heart.
"Hey, Duo, what's wrong?" He sat down next to his friend and looked out the window as if simply following his field of vision might answer the question.
"Hmm?" Duo glanced up, embarrassed that his friend had caught him moping. "Hi, Quatre. I'm just a little sad, that's all."
"Really? Why? And what was that song you were singing?"
Duo smiled, his face warming as he was distracted from his thoughts. "It's called 'White Christmas', Q. It's a Christian holiday we used to celebrate back in the orphanage on L-2. Sister Helen used to sing it to us, and it just seems nice to remember." He frowned. "Actually, Christmas is one of the few really good memories I have of being a kid. Most of the rest of it sucked."
Now Quatre had an idea of what was bothering his friend. He vaguely recalled the holiday as being a time when friends and family gathered together to exchange gifts and simply enjoy each other's company. He decided he would personally see to it that Duo had a Christmas to remember.
"Say, Duo," Quatre smiled, "would you like to go out and get a gift for Heero or something? I was thinking of going shopping anyway." Many old traditions were maintained by the people in the area and Quatre was banking on them still celebrating the holiday in the region they were in at the time.
"Really?" He asked, surprised his Arabian friend would offer to help him.
This should never have surprised him at all, but he was depressed and was not exactly thinking things through.
"That would be great, Q, but that isn't what Christmas is really about. Besides," he looked embarrassed, "I would want to get stuff for you and Trowa, too. The idea of Christmas gifts is to share with everybody you care about. I mean, this is my family here. Too bad Wufei isn't here, then we'd all be in one place for the holiday." The smile left his lips as he thought about the taciturn young Chinese pilot. Perhaps some Christmas cheer would ease some of his burdens as well.
Quatre frowned, he had invited the ShenLong pilot to join them, but no answer had ever been received. Before anything else could be said, there was a knock at the door. Fortuitously, it was the subject of discussion himself.
"Wufei!" Quatre pronounced loudly so Duo would hear him. "I'm so glad you could make it!"
"It was kind of you to invite me," Wufei remarked. "Things were getting a little difficult waiting alone as I was. Being with you and the others is preferable."
The braided pilot had come up to the other two young men and stood grinning broadly, something that puzzled him immensely. "Hello, Maxwell."
"Wufei! Man it's good to see you!" Duo grinned finally giving in to his inner urges to embrace the newest arrival, much to the horror and dismay of the other. "This is the best surprise!"
"Quatre?" He asked suspiciously. "What is going on here? He is rather manic normally, but has something happened?"
Quatre hid a chuckle behind one hand as he regarded the mixture of fear and outrage. "No, Wufei, we were just mentioning it would be good to see you again, that's all. Come in, come in! Don't just stand here!"
"Where are Yuy and Barton?" He asked looking around surprised to see these two without one of their lovers nearby. Somehow when the two couples were together it seemed as if one or the other monitored the two present. They had created all manner of havoc when left alone previously and the three quiet pilots had made an allegiance of sorts to keep them out of trouble, especially Duo Maxwell.
Duo grinned broadly, "They're out back getting firewood for tonight. We're having a fire and a party, so you're just in time!"
"Party?" Wufei frowned. He was tired and was looking forward to resting after a long journey. "What is the occasion?"
"Well, they are calling for snow tonight and we thought it was a good thing to celebrate. But now I've found out that it's Christmas, too!" Quatre smiled knowing full well he'd have to explain it, but wanted to get things underway for Duo's special evening. "But instead of talking, why don't we split up? Wufei, want to me to show you a room you can use? Oh, and, Duo, could you go get Trowa for me? I need to talk to him."
"Sure!" Duo grinned and headed out failing to wonder why he was being sent on such a trivial errand.
"Now, Wufei," Quatre grinned conspiratorially, "want to know what *else* is going on for Christmas?"
Wufei groaned. He had suffered through a variety of bizarre holidays since the time the five had decided to work together as a team instead of free-agents. Whenever it was something Quatre wanted, though, it always seemed to come to pass and he knew better than to argue with fate, especially when it was under the direction of the blond.
