Fall Traditions by Andrea Readwolf

Part One: Hay Ride

Tradition #1: Hay Ride, 208AC

A high-pitched shriek shot throughout the household, followed shortly by the patter of little feet and tiny cries of "They're here! They're here! Daddy! Daddy! They're here!"

Duo appeared at the top of the staircase just in time to catch up the flying whirlwind and swing her into his arms with a grunt. "Alright, Trini-baby. We're coming, we're coming," he laughed.

The squirming bundle that was his eldest daughter wormed herself out of his arms and dashed down the corridor-only to collide-literarily-with the legs of her other father. Heero swept the 5-year old ball of energy up and slung her against his side. "What have I told you about running inside the  house?" he asked the child sternly.

The dark-haired girl muoed. "I'm sorry, I forgot," she cooed, laying her head on his shoulder and wrapping her little arms around his neck as best she could.

"Hn," he answered, affectionately tapping her backside.

Downstairs the doorbell sang before someone opened the door, and the girl's excitement from moments before returned in full force.

"They're here, daddy! Uncle Quatre and Uncle Trowa are here with the  wagon!"

"okay, okay," Heero laughed, trying to calm her down. "Go grab your sweater." The child took off running the second her little feet touched ground and Heero only shook his head, still smiling.

"Whoa!" Duo called out as Trinity darted past him and down the stairs at a break-neck speed. "Where's the fire?" he asked his husband.

"Under your feet if you don't start moving," Wufei snapped, nudging Heero to remind the other man he was still waiting to get out of the bedroom.

"There's my baby," Duo cooed, reaching past Heero to snatch the baby from Wufei's arms. "Hey, baby," the long haired man sang, swinging the girl from side-to-side. Mara Jade googled with infantile delight. "Don't you look pretty in your pretty purple sweater? Huh?" He touched their noses. "Pretty as a picture."

"Hello?" Quatre's voice called out from downstairs. "Heero? Duo? Wufei? You guys still coming?"

"We're coming," Heero called down while Wufei and Duo fussed over the baby.

"Okay, we'll be in the wagon!" Quatre answered. "Oh! And there's a surprise!"

The three mean had a pretty good guess as to what the "surprise" was when they heard Trinity's delighted squeal seconds later, and they smiled at each other.

"KITTENS!!!!"

Outside, Trowa sat in back of the large old-fashioned wooden wagon on a pile of hay, calmly stroking the large, shaggy-haired grey mother while his 4-year old delighted over the seven wiggly, topsy-turvy kittens. Trinity was already trying to climb up into the wagon-with Mark's help-and claim one of the miniature felines for her own. Up front, holding the reigns to the two strong bay geldings, Michael Braddocks sat beside her girlfriend, Kaitlin, looking back at the scene and grinning. Matthew handed Trinity a dark grey tabby striped kitten, explaining, "Mitsy had kittens last month. We thought the kids would like to see them."

"That was a great idea, guys," Duo replied, jiggling the baby in his arms. Heero hopped up into the wagon, nodding to Trowa and Quatre, before yanking Wufei up into his lap.

"Heero!"

"How's your sister?" Duo asked, hopping in next to Heero and snuggling up close to the two men. Wufei reached over and shifted the blanket around Mara Jade; Duo swiping his hands away, telling him to stop it.

"Good, good," Michael offered, signaling to the horses to start up. "This Mars position was really good for her."

"Yeah, but Jake wasn't too happy having to go, I bet," Duo grinned.

"Not one bit," Mark was grinning too. "Mei just told him no one was forcing him to go and that if he wanted to stay here on Earth, that was fine, but *she* was going to Mars. Pretty much settled the matter."

"I bet," Wufei smiled. "She was always a strong-willed child."

"Don't you mean opinionated and bossy?" Mark asked, tipping a kitten over and scratching its round little tummy.

"Tristan, Tristan, no, no. Don't pull the kitten's tail," Quatre charged, rescuing the yowling kitten.
