Part Two: In The Arms Of Sleep

[sleep will not come to this tired body now]

Duo laid awake, hugging his pillow tightly to his chest. "Damned baka," he snarled aloud, kicking the bed emphatically. Then a shuddering sob rent through him. "Damned baka..."

[peace will not come to this lonely heart]

He'd been through so much emotional turmoil these past few days... How could he possibly hope to sleep now? How could he sleep when Heero was out there, dying somewhere on a parched and bloody field? His lover, if not his love.

So he laid awake on his bed, sweating slightly as the moisture clung to his skin, creating a glossy sheen over his arms and legs. And brooded. There was nothing to be done now. Only waiting.

And as every soldier who had sat in a cold Gundam for hours, waiting for the signal that would touch off another round of fighting and bloodshed knew, waiting was the worst part.

[there are some things i'll live without but]

Quatre watched Duo toss and turn sadly, sorrow in his eyes. He couldn't even begin to understand what Duo must have been feeling. There was so little hope in their lives. So little room for anything remotely close to love. He'd thought that Heero and Duo had found that small comfort.

Yet Heero was out there somewhere, and Duo was here, mourning his lover, even if he wouldn't admit what he was doing. The injustice of it all hit him; they'd paid for the blood they spilled in kind. This, though; it was too much. Too much for any human being to ever pay.

[i want you to know that i need you right now]

Duo stared into the mirror set up across from the bed so they could watch as they made love. His own eyes, hollow and cool, stared back at him.

[i need you tonite]

He would have prayed, but he had no one to pray to, no benevolent God to hear his prayers.

[i steal a kiss from his sleeping shadow]

He would have sold his soul, but there was no one to barter with.

[moves cause i'll always miss him wherever he goes]

When had this strange dependency started? Quatre wondered, setting down his newspaper, setting down all pretenses that he wasn't keeping watch over Duo. When had shy puppy love and need kindled into desperate fatal attraction?

He wasn't sure. All that Quatre knew was if the brought back Heero dead, Duo would soon follow, through grief or by his own hand.

[and i'll always need him more than he could ever need me]

Someone will have to go on suicide watch, he thought glumly. And most likely it'll be me.

[i need someone to ease my mind but sometimes a someone]

His voice reached to him through the door, soft and strangely seductive. "Quatre?"

The blonde boy swallowed and went to visit his patient. "How are you feeling, Duo?"

" Crappy as all hell," he replied cheerfully, tucking the pillow beneath his chin. "Quatre..."

He bit his lip. "Yes?" he finally said. "What's wrong, Duo?" His braided friend swore violently and wiped at his streaming eyes.

" Is it wrong to hope this time?" Duo looked haunted, his face haggard and eyes wide with exhaustion. Quatre shook his head and gently began to stroke Duo's back in calming circles.

[is so hard to find and i'll do anything to keep him here tonite]

" Stay with me," Duo pleaded, and for a moment, Quatre thought Duo was going to kiss him. Then he realized Duo just wanted human contact, someone to protect him against the dark, and nodded, lying down beside him.

[and i'll say anything to make him feel all right and]

" How could it be wrong to hope?" Quatre asked aloud.

[i'll be anything to keep him here tonite]

He had to keep Duo alive, for Heero's sake. He wouldn't have wanted to see his lover in such a state, Quatre was sure.

[cause i want you to stay, with me i need you tonite]

Duo snuggled against him, lashes beaded with tears, and began to sleep, for the first time in days.

[he comes to me like an angel out of time as]

Absently, Quatre ran his fingers over Duo's bangs, stroking the silky strands. Duo made an encouraging sound in his throat, and stuck his nose in Quatre's ear.

[i play the part of a saint on my knees]

Stifling a laugh, he gently rotated the slumbering boy so that he was nosing his own pillow. "Sleep well," he told the slender pilot, and reached over to the nightstand, clicking the lamp off.

[there are some things i'll live without but i want you to know]

Yet Duo remained awake, his eyes open through tiny spaces just above his eyelashes. Quatre was such a nice boy. Naive, but nice enough.

[that i need you right now]

Heero, Duo thought miserably.

[suffer my desire]

They were right.

[suffer my desire]

The waiting was the worst part.

[suffer my desire for you]
