Part Nine

Meiran trembles before her wrath. Somehow, she has known that it would come to this, her cowering against the wall, clutching a copy of Chemistry: Understanding Applications as Relena barks in her face, tears streaming down her face.

"You told," she says, reaching out to poke Meiran's bare shoulder. "You horrible person, how could you do that? I know you told," she says again, retreating, backing up enough so that Meiran's chest releases and she can breathe again. Some part of her understands that she is only a U-2 retreating to reload ammunition.

"Relena, I swear, I didn't know they were going to pull you out of class," says Meiran. Heat and fear swells in her breast, solidifying into real terror. "I didn't want that." She is a strong girl, a fierce competitor, and yet she fears a girl five inches shorter than she, a girl whose savagery growls in every line creased into her forehead.

"What did you want?" says Relena, her eyes blurry as she moves frantically, pacing the length of the room. "What did you want, Meiran?" She laughs. "Do you want me to eat? I eat all the time. Do you want me to gain weight? That's your department." The Chinese girl bites her lip and tries not to cry. "What do you want?"

Meiran starts to cry.

"I said, 'WHAT DO YOU WANT?'" Something inside her blue eyes snaps and Relena is upon her, pulling her hair, shaking her hard until her jaw clicks closed and she bites her own tongue. The blood in her mouth is thick and sweet; she whimpers, afraid she's severed the tip off cleanly.

"I want you to be well again," says Meiran. Relena flies away, as if bitten by an animal she tried to pet. Spitting into her hand, she find no piece of flesh floating around into her mouth. A flesh wound, then.

"It's so stupid," says Relena, sitting at her desk. "It's so stupid. They were just suspicious. They don't know." Slumping against the wall, Meiran closes her eyes.

"The school is so stupid."

Oh God, she thinks.

"It doesn't know anything."

Suddenly, all she can think of is the look on Noin's face when she finds out. And she will; she knows that Relena will tell as many people as possible, playing it off as a joke, but the real joke will be when one morning Meiran wakes and Relena doesn't, and she's the one who touches cold, firm flesh. She's the one who calls security to report a death in the middle of the night.

"Meiran."

What will Noin say? she wonders. The violet-eyed girl is in her AP Chem class, and they always work together for lab period, even if they don't really like each other.

"MEIRAN!"

She stumbles to her feet, running to the bathroom, and vomits up the chicken salad she had for dinner. A few moments later, she hears fists pounding on the door.

"MEIRAN! ARE YOU LISTENING TO ME?"

She wipes her mouth with a sheet of toilet paper, hating the taste of acid and guilt and self-hatred, from herself, from Relena. It rolls off Relena in waves that paralyze her with their anger.

"ARE YOU LISTENING TO ME?"
