Excerpt taken from an article appearing in the New York Times, September 3, 2000:
The search for Relena Darlian is over. Her body was found in her former home, now belonging to Augustine Carol, beneath loose floorboards; it appears it has been there for approximately six months. She leaves behind a step-brother, Heero Yui, who released a statement earlier this morning: Said Yui:
I feel terrible. ... Relena was a wonderful person with a big heart.
The detective working on the case, Dana Ritchel, an old family friend, made similar remarks at a press conference last night.
"Relena was a beloved member of the community, and we will all mourn her passing." Ritchel was unable to continue speaking.
Police officials say there is no way to know exactly who killed Darlian, since all evidence has been destroyed in the past months as the new owners moved in. Several of Relena's deceased father's supporters have taken to laying flowers on the front step of Carol's home.
"It's quite annoying," said Carol. "I wish they'd just leave her memory, and my front steps, in peace."
Excerpt from an interview with Treize Khushrenada and Chang Wufei, by Connie Chung:
Treize: Relena touched all of us, in one way or another. So did her brother; they both touched all of us in very important ways. Very important ways. They'll both be missed.
Connie: Her brother still attends Montgomery Prep, I thought.
Treize: He's gotten enough credits to graduate this year; we wish him the best.
Wufei: Heero especially touched me in an unforgettable way. I'll never forget the way he touched me.
Excerpt from a letter to Heero Yui, unsigned:
You know who this is. She certainly was a hard bitch to kill, wasn't she?
....
I hope you and your new lover are doing well. I am; I think I'm going to retire. The itch in my trigger finger's gone now. I've found two someones as well, someones I think you know rather well, who you touched in a very important way. If you don't know who they are, I'll think less of you.
....
You know, she wanted me to kill you and your lover. I wouldn't do it.
I don't know why; she offered me a hell of a lot of money. But offing ex-lovers isn't my style, Michael.
Stay healthy. Get tested; you've had too many not to. Be smart and keep this one. He's the one, at least as much as there can be only one person for everyone. I know you; you'd never turn down good sex.
And lastly, live with no regrets. You've ended someone's life, and now you know: there isn't always a tomorrow, especially for people like us. Take care of him.
They sat out on their porch, watching the sun rise at high noon. The leaves were beginning to change color, their reds and oranges speckling the overwhelming blue canopy of sky.
"Hey Heero," whispered the American after a moment, "do you ever regret it?"
Heero thought for a while, watching the kids pedaling their bikes on a warm Saturday morning. Any observer would only see two friends sharing conversation and sipping cider.
"Not at all," said the Japanese boy.
"Yeah," said Duo, "me neither."
